IMPROVEMENT IN lNVALlD-BEDSTEADS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 187,777, dated February 27, 1877; application filer January 9, 1877.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOHN Q. A. SARGENT, of Manchester, in the county of Hillsborough and State of New, Hampshire, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Invalid-Bedsteads, of which the following is a specification, that will enable those skilled in the art to which my improvements appertain to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings.

My improvements relate to an invalid-bed stead of the kind patented to Josiah Urosby, August 23, 1864., and are herein following specifically set forth and claimed.

A indicates the main bedstead, provided with supportingstraps B, which pass through suitable apertures in the bed-rail, and are held in place by holding-pins b, inserted in loops in their en 8. Two or more of these loops are provided at one end of the supporting-straps for adjusting them to the proper height or tension.

These straps will, when desired, support a light mattress, on which the patient may lie; but they are designed more especially to support a patient whenever the trundle-bed is lowered for dressing wounds, or allowing a circulation of air, or for purposes of defecation.

Along the under side of one of the bed-rails in a suitable groove runs a rod, 0, having at each end an endless screw, 0, engaging with pinions d on cross rods D l), at the head and foot of the bed. The cross-rods have secured to them, by means of links 11 d, lifting-straps E E, provided with hooks e e at their lower ends.

F is an independent or trundle bed, provided with a mattress, and intended to be suspended by the straps E E. This, as shown,

' is of the well-known pattern of camp-bedstead,

provided with longitudinal spring-slats and folding legs. The rod 0 projects through the bed-post at one end, or at both ends, and is squared to receive a wrench or crank.

The operation of these devices is as follows: The trundle-bed being run under the main bed and hooked up by the hooks e e, a wrench or crank may be applied to the projection of the rod 0 to turn it, and the trundle-bed may be elevated until the supporting straps B lie loosely on its mattress, and the mattress supports the patient.

The trundlebed may be lowered and re moved in like manner to accommodate the various needs of the patient without removing him, whether he rests immediately on the straps or on a cushion or mattress having an aperture for stool.

While the trundle'bed may be thus removed and replaced, the supporting straps can be tightened or loosened by means of their holding-pins, according to the need of having them sustain or not sustain the weight of the patient.

Having thus described my improvements, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

l. The combination of the rod 0, the cross- 7 rods E E, provided with links d d, the hooked lifting-straps e e, and the trundle-bed F, all substantially as described.

2. The combination of the adjustable looped supporting-straps B and holding-pins b of the main bed with the trundlebed and its adjusting mechanism, consisting of the rod 0, the cross-rods E E, with links (1' d, and the hooked lifting-straps, all substantially as described.

3. The combination of the adjustable looped supporting-straps B with the holding-pins b, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
