This invention relates to marking tags, and pertains more particularly to tags which are adapted to be secured to mehchandise by means of strings or similar flexible connections.

It is an object of the present invention to provide a string tag which may not only be easily attached to the mechandise, but which may be easily and quickly removed therefrom lo without danger of injury to the merchandise.

Other objects and advantages of the invention will appear hereinafter.

A preferred embodiment of the invention selected for purposes of illustration is shown in the accompanying drawing, in which,

Referring to the drawing, the tag l is provided with an aperture 2 through which is threaded a string 3, the ends of which may be knotted as at t.

In the specific embodiment chosen for purposes of illustration there is carried on the flexible member herein referred to as the string 3 a barb 5 having an aperture 6 30 through which the string 3 is threaded, said barb being also provided with a pointed end 7 adapted to penetrate the merchandise to which the tag is to be-attached.

The barb is provided with a notch or slit 8 5 extending from the edge of the barb to the aperture 6, said notch being preferably at the tail end of the barb and closed sufficiently at its inner end so that the string will remain in the aperture 6 unless removed as hereinafter explained, but open sufficiently at its outer end to permit the string to be easily inserted.

wWhen it is desired to attach the tag to merchandise, the barb 5 having string 3 secured thereto is pushed through the material as illustrated in Figures 2 and .3 and due to the intermediate location of the aperture 6 the barb assumes a position parallel to the 50 surface of the material, constituting in effect i930. serial No. Y444,398.Y

When it is desired to remove the'tag from the goods, the adjacent the barb and insert one strand thereofinto the notch or slit 8 in the tail end of the barb, as illustrated in Figure 4, and by moving it from the edgeintotheaperture 6, Vfree the string from the barb asillustrated in Figure 5. The string and tag, of course, may then be yreadily removed from the material.

An additional advantageof the notched or slitted barb lies inthe facility with Which the barb may be 'attached to the string.

Without the slit it is necessary to thread the string through the vaperture in the barb before the string is knotted; with the slit the strings may be knotted by machine in the usual manner, and the barbs may afterwards be attached by merely pushing one strand of the string through the slit `into the aperture.

It Will be understood that the invention may be variously modified and embodied within the scope of the subjoined claims.

What I claim is:

l. A marking tag having a string loop atuser may pull out the stringv tached thereto and an anchor barb carried on said loop, said barb being provided with a pointed end for penetrating material and a slit through the body of said barb carrying one end of the loop, said slit terminating inwardly intermediate the ends of the barb to permit the barb when turned parallel t0 the surface of the material after passing through the same to constitute an anchor for said" loop, said slit permitting removal of the barb 4. A barb for a marking tag, having an aperture therein, and a slit through the body of said barb from said aperture to one edge of the barb.

5. An anchor barb for a marking tag having an attaching string, comprising an elongatedV metal member provided With a pointed piercing end and having a slit through the body from the edge thereof for receiving the string.

6. Ananchor barb for a markingtaghaving an attaching string, comprising an elongated metal member provided with a pointed piercing end and having a slit therein for receiving the string, saidA slit being flared at its outer end. v

7 An vanchor barb for a marking tag, having a slit through the body from an edge thereof terminating interiorly intermediate the ends of the barb for the purposes set forth.

8. An anchor barb fo-r a marking tag, having a slit through the body thereof and terminating interiorly near themid-length of the barb.
