This invention relates toa `Jfurnace and more particularly to one which is adapted to vbe used in connection'with a'hot airheating system and in which gas is used as fuel.
The general object of the invention is to lprovide an improved arrangement, whereby y the greater part of the combustion takes place in direct contact with the wall of the irepct, so that the heat generated is conducted directly '-to the air heating chamber, re-
sulting in the highest possible efficiency and the utmost economy in the used. This involves not only an improved arrangement of a series of gas .jets with respect to the wall of the iire'pot but also improved means or directing the How of both the primary and secondary air supply.
A 'The fuel` is supplied through a burner ring or manifold and directed upwardly and outwardly against the 4series of; spuds having primary ai'rinlet openings.' The secondary supply ofv air is directed against the wall and combined with the primary mixture in a manner best suited to complete the combustion in contact with the wall. The direction and rate of lowof this secondary supply is controlled by means of a baie resting preferably upon the burner ring and sloping' upwardly toward the ,3 wall of the firepot, leaving a restricted'annular space through which the products of combustion are discharged. In combination with the baie, there may also be provided an adjustable top to adapt the same for the 5 proper control of the air current in repots of different sizes.

The ring 7 ymay' be formed with a series of peripheral lugs 13 to gage the position of the burner and tbg spuds with relation to the iirepot.
The secondary supply of air for completing thecombustion 4is supplied through the `annular space between the ring 7 and the wall of the firepot. For controlling the rate of flow and the direction of this secondary air supply, bafle sections 1 4 are mounted a 'ove the spuds 11, preferably resting upon the' upv per surface of the ring 7 in channels 15 ,formed between opposed anges 16 extending upwardly from the burner ring. This top extends completely around the upper edge of the baille and hasa number of downwardly rojectin flan s 18 formin channels 19 between t em either one of which is adapted to fit over the edge of the baille, to reduce the area ofthe' outlet. By providin a number of such channels 19 and blyl making the top in a number of'sections w 'ch over ap as at 20, the top may be adjusted to adapt it tirepots of different diameters. Each section of the top may be formed -with an outwardly projecting lug 21 which makes it impossible to adjust the to too closepto the wall.
It is to be un erstood that the invention is to the form herein shown and described ut includes all such modifications as fall within the scope of the appended claims. Y
What II claim is:
1. In a gas furnace, the combination of a l irepot, a burner mounted within the firepot and having upwardly and outwardly directed outlets, spaced upstanding anges on Athe urner forming a channel between -them, and a baille 'supported independently of the irepot wall by engagement between said flangesV and presenting an outwardly -and upwardly sloping/y surface toward the wall of the irepot, thereby forming anup wardly converging space above th'e gas outlets to restrict the iow of the burned gas.`
2. In a gasfurnace, the combination of a repot, a burner manifold disposed within the firepot and having spuds inclined upwardly and outwardly toward the .wall of the repot, a seat on which the manifold is supported,leaving a space between the manifold and the wall of the firepot for the air supply to the burner, a baille extending upwardly from the manifold and approaching the wall oftlie-frepot` above the spuds, and anges on the burner between whicn the basel of the unnecessarily cooled by an excessiveY l 1,e74,eee l baille is held so that the batlie is supported independently of the irepot wall.
