32 Claims.
This invention relates to furnaces and has for an object the provision of a new and improved structure of this type.
In the drawings accompanying this specification and forming part of this application I have shown, for purposes of illustration, one form which my invention may assume, and in these drawings:
Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view, partially in elevation, showing an embodiment of the invention,
Figure 2 is a horizontal sectional view corresponding substantially to the line 2-2 of Figure 1,
Figure 3 is a horizontal sectional view corresponding substantially to the line 3-3 of Figure 1, while Figure 4 is a horizontal sectional view corresponding substantially to the line 4--4 of Figure 1.
The embodiment herein described comprises a furnace which may have an angular ash pit l and an annular fire-box shown as broken away at the top, and an interior annular shoulder l2 disposed adjacent the point of juncture between the ash pit Ill and fire-box Extending into the ash pit in is a gas supply pipe l3 connected by an elbow M to an upstanding pipe section I5, the upper end of the latter being connected with a burner assembly IS. The burner assembly l6 comprises a central section l'l into which the upper end of the pipe I is threaded, and provides a chamber l8 into which said pipe section l5 discharges, having nozzles |9 opening radially outwardly through said central section; and formed integrally with the central section I! is an annular hub section having a horizontal wall 20, depending wall 2|, and bottom wall 22, the walls 20, 2|, and 22 defining a mixing chamber 23, and the bottom wall 22 provided with radially disposed openings 24 adapted to be varied in size by a valve shutter 25 rotatably supported at the lower end of the central section l1, and operable to regulate the supply of air to the mixing chamber 23.
The annular depending wall H is circumferentially provided at intervals with apertures for the reception of a plurality of conduit tubes 26, each reduced as at 21 and flared as at 28, arranged in line with, though spaced from, a related nozzle l9, secured in position by a screw 29, upturned at its outer end as at 30, each carrying a segmental burner section 3|, having outlet orifices 32 and provided with a tongue 33 at one end and a recess 34 at the opposite end adapted tegrally formed, intermediate section 45, the secto relatively loosely interengage with similar formations of a related burner section 3|; the burner sections 3| when assembled assume an annular formation disposed adjacent to, though spaced from, the enclosing annular wall of the fire-box and adapted to be ignited by pilot burners 35. The diameter of the annular formation defined by the segmental burner sections 3| may be increased where desired, merely by loosening the screws 29 which secure the tubes 26, and moving the tubes 26 outwardly with respect to the wall 2|, the tongues 33 and corresponding recesses 34 of the burner sections 3| moving circumferentially to permit expansion in size. Whenever the burner sections 3| are so adjusted it is desirable to substitute for the nozzles I9 other nozzles of a similar type though of greater length, thus to preserve the spacing between the outlet of each nozzle and the inlet of an adjacent tube 26, this spacing being of importance in obtaining the most eflicient mixture of air and gas during operation of the burner.
The depending wall 2| of the mixing chamber 23 adjacent its lower edge is provided with a radially extending flange 36 forming a support for the tubes 26, as at 31, and at its outer edge has fixedly secured thereto an annular extension 38 of such size as to fit beneath the annular shoulder I2 of the furnace, provided with apertures 39 at intervals to permit passage of secondary air to the burners 3|, and is held in position by an adjustable jack 40 connected to the elbow M, the latter also supporting the entire burner assembly |6 in position.
Detachably supported by the burner assembly I 6 are means cooperating with the enclosing wall of the fire-box to provide a passage 4| for the heat energy generated by the burner assembly I 6, said means comprising a plurality of deflectors 42, arranged in annular formation, each elongated, of suitable width, relatively thin in crosssection, of metallic material, preferably cast iron, having opposite end sections 43 and 44, longitudinally offset and connected by an inclined intion 43 having an angularly arranged foot 46 adapted to rest upon an adjacent burner tube 26, and the section 44 having a plurality of projecting lugs 41 on its outer face adapted to rest against the adjacent surface of the enclosing Wall of the fire-box said lugs being staggered in position, operating to space the sections 44 from the wall of the fire-box II to define a relatively restricted portion 48 of the passage 4|, and also operating as staggered baffles in said restricted portion 43 of the passage 4|. The sections 43 of the deflectors 42 are disposed inwardly of the burner sections 3|, and spaced a greater distance from the enclosing Wall of the fire-box H than the sections 34, and the intermediate sections 45 are arranged so as to provide a combustion chamber of substantial height, beyond which is located the restricted portion 48 of the passage 4|. Along their opposite longitudinal edges the deflectors are rabbeted as at 49 to provide for interengagement of the deflectors, which together form a continuous wall, yet are adjustable to different sizes of fire-box through relative lateral movement of the deflectors as permitted by the width of the interengaging rabbeted' portions.
The burner assembly l6 and deflectors 42 may be readily set up or detached with reference to the furnace shell, it being evident that in order to disassemble the deflectors 42 the same may be lifted from their position through the door of the fire-box H; the burner assembly i6 may be removed by disconnecting the pipe, lowering the jack, and removing the burner assembly as a unit through the ash pit door. Of course assembly is effected by reversing the procedure described.
In operation, and with the pilot lights 35 burning, gas is supplied to the burner assembly l6 through the pipe sections [3 and I5, passing thence to the distributing chamber I3, through the nozzles l9, discharged into the flared ends 28 of the burner tubes 26, during this action passing through the mixing chamber 23 where a sufficient quantity of air is supplied for proper combustion, this quantity of air being capable of regulation through operation of the shutter 25; and in this connection it is particularly pointed out that the air supply for all the burners is regulated through operation of a single means common to all of the burners. The gaseous mixture entering the tubes 25 passes to the burner sections 3|, where it is ignited at intervals by the pilot lights 35, and due to the provision of the interengaged tongue and recess construction of the burners, ignition is quickly effected by one burner from an adjacent burner. Secondary air is supplied to the burners 36 only through the openings 39 in the sealing flange 38, and the amount of secondary air thus supplied depends upon the size and number of openings 39, which may be calculated in advance, and predetermined to effect the best results.
ihe heat energy generated by the burner assembly [6 passes into the passage 4! defined by the deflectors 42 and the adjacent wall of the fire-box l l, passing first int-o the relatively large combustion chamber M where complete combustion is permitted to take place, the heat energy afterward passing upwardly into the restricted portion 48 of the passage 4| where it encounters the staggered baflles provided by the staggered projecting lugs ll, giving up its heat during passage along the wall of the fire-box. Particular attention is directed to the fact that the metallic nature of the deflectors prevents crumbling thereof and avoids any danger of clogging up the apertures of the burners 3! by falling particles, such as might occur if different material were employed.
It will be apparent to those skilled in the art that the described embodiment accomplishes at least the principal object of the invention; it will also be apparent that the invention may be applied to uses and has advantages other than those herein described, and may be variously changed and modified without departing from the spirit of the invention; accordingly it will be understood that the embodiment described is illustrative only and the invention is not limited thereto.
