Description

Patented Nov. 11,1924. y A
UNITED sTATEs MICHAEL BOGRE, QF DETROIT, MICHIGAN,
HYDBOCARBON BURNER.
Application led August 17, 1922. SeriaI No. 582,831.
To all whom it may concern.:
Be it known that I, MICHAEL' Bocnn, a citizen of Hun ary, residing at Detroit, in the county of ayne and State of. Michi an, have invented certain new and useful mprovements in Hydrocarbon Burners, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanyin drawings.
his invention relates to a hydrocarbon burner that may be advantageously used as part of a heating aplparatus, for instance heating a furnace c amber employed for distributing warm air.
My invention aims to 'provide a device for burning oil, gas and other hydrocarbon fuel and the device includes means for atomizing oil or liquid fuels and distributing the atomized fuel to burner orifices where flames of a high caloric value are maintained and in some instances deflected so that a chamber of large area may have its walls heated and such walls in turn heat air circulated about or impinge against the walls.
invention further aims to provide heating apparatus including a fuel tank, an air compressor, an atomizing device, a burner, a combustion chamber and an air heating chamber, all providing a compact apparatus that may be easily placed in opg eration, readily controlled, and operated to produce a maximum heat with a minimum ex enditure of fuel.
y invention further aims to provide a novel fuel burner includin a combustion chamber and superimposed eectors, one of which serves as a fuel distributor and the other as a fiame spreading device.
The construction entering into my heating apparatus and oil burner will be hereinafter specifically described and then claimed, and reference will 110W be had to the drawing, wherein- Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of a heating apparatus in accordance with my invention; l
Fig. 2 is an enlarged vertical sectional view of the device, and
Fig. 3 is a plan of the in section.
The hydrocarbon burner comprises a cup shaped metallic casing 1 having a bottom wall 2 supported by a plurality of legs 3, and the inner face of the bottom wall 2 is dished or inclined. to provide a .drain surface 3 to an outlet or return pipe 4, confuel burner, partly nected to an oil tank 5 or other source of liquid fuel said pipe having a conventional form of shut ofi' valve 6.
Mounted axially of the bottom wall 2 of the. burner casing 1 is the outer detachable nipple 7 of a tubular atomizing device 8 which has its upper end formed with an annular groove 9, a longitudinal passage 10, and an inner apertured nipple 11, said nipple extending into a conical shaped chamber 12 communicating with the outlet orifice 13 of the outer nipple 7. The inner nipple 11 has an outlet orifice 14 adapted to communicate with the' longitudinal bore 15 of the atomizing device 8, and the lower end of the bore terminates in a chamber 16 having walls thereof screwthreaded for the threaded portionl? of a needle valve 18 adjustable to and from the outlet orifice 14 of the inner nipple 11. The lower end of the needle valve 18 extends through a conventional form of stuiiing box 19 and terminates in a suitable handle 20 by which the needle valve may be easily adjusted.
The atomizing device 8, at the chamber 16, has a. lateral branch or port 21 connected by an air inlet pipe 22 to a conventional form of motor driven air compressor 23 and on the pipe 22 is an ordinary air pressure au e 24.
T e longitudinal passage 10 of the atomizin device 8 communicates with a T connectlon 25 provided with a conventional form of needle valve 26, and the T connection 25 is connected by a valve equipped pipe 27 to the oil tank 5, said pipe extending in proximity to the bottom of the tank. This oil tank may be located in the ground or below a floor 28 supportin the air compressor 23 and the legs 3 of t e burner casing 1, with said oil tank provided with a cap equipped filling connection 29.
The burner casing 1 provides a combustion chamber 30 and mounted on the top of said burner casing is a burner head or plate 31 provided with a plurality of hangers 32 fitting over the. upper edges of the casing 1 and connected thereto by screw bolts 33 or other fastening means. The hangers 32 may be connected by converging ribs 34 meeting at a central vertically 'sposed post 35 supportingi a horizontally disposed circular flame eflector or distributor 36 which has its lowerfaoe dished or concave for deflectof the delector.
rllhe burner head or plate 31 has a series of concentric and circumferentially disposed iame orifices or slots 37, eachof which is tapered inwardly from the lower face of said head to the upper face thereof, as best shown in Fig. l, so that flames may readily enter the orifices or slots. Centrally of the lower face of the burner head or plate 3l is a dished or concave deflector 38, and since this deflector is directly above the atomizing nipple t' any flames directed upwardly from the nipple will be deflected upwardly and distributed to pass through the orifices or slots 37.
Extending through the bottom wall 2 of the burner casing 1 is a valve equipped gas supply pipe 39 provided with a pilot burner 40 contiguous to the nipple 7 and said pilot burner may be lighted by using a taper through a tubular lighting connection 41 carried by the casing 1, said connection having a detachable cap 42.
As an instance of the use of the oil burner. l show a furnace structure including a shell 43 having an exhau@ flue or chimney 44 and surrounding the shell 43 is a housing 45 having a cold air inlet Hue 46 and Warm air outlet flues 47. The burner casing l, within the shell 43, may be surrounded by a lire brick wall 48 and the housing 45 and the shell 43 may have openings 48 providingl .t
clearance for the pipes 22, 27 and 39 extend-l ing to the atomizing device 8.
lln operation, the air compressor 23 supplies air, under pressure, at the inner nipple l1 and this inner nipple cooperates with the outer nipple 7 in providing an ejector. The air forcibly entering` the outer nipple 7 causes oil to be lifted from the tank 5 and atomized by an admixture of air and oil in the nipple 7. The proportions of air and oil may be regulated by the needle valves 18 and 26. As the atomized fuel enters the combustion chamber 30, it is i cited by the pilot flame and the whole interior of the combustion chamber 30 becomes a mass of fire which is emitted through the orices or slots 37 in circular dame formation with the innermost dames heating the air directly under the upper dedector 37 and should there be intense dames such dames will impinge against the upper deector and be directed outwardly with the burned gases eventually passing through the exhaust Hue 44. The shell 43 will be subjected to an intense heat and cold air enterin the housing 45 will impinge against sai shell and be heated before passing through the llues 47 to compartments or other places.
During the operation of the burner any fuel which has not been atomized or any condensate may collect on the bottom wall 2' of the burner casing l and return through the pipe 4 to the oil tank 5.
lt is thought that the operation of my burner, in connection with a heating apparatus, will be understood without further description, and while in the drawing there is illustrated a preferred embodiment of my invention, it is to be understood that the structural elements are susceptible to such variations and modifications as fall within the scope of the appended claim.
What ll claim is A burner comprising a casing adording a combustion chamber in which a mass of fire may be maintained, fuel supply means connected to said casing, a burner plate fmounted on the upper edges of said casing and provided with circumferentially disposed tapered llame orifices, and dedectors above and below said burner plate.
ln testimony whereof l affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
MlCHA'lEL BGGRE.
