An object of my invention is to provide a comb which is designed especially for use with hair waving machines although it can be used independently if desired.

The comb consists of a U-shaped member provided with a plurality of teeth, this member being hinged to a needle and swingable toward the needle so that the U-shaped teeth will straddle it. A spring normally holds the comb portion away from the needle.

A further object of my invention is to provide a device of the type described in which itwo needles are hinged together and may fbe swimg toward each other, a spring being employed for moving the needles apart when they are manually released.

A further object of my invention is to provide a device of the type described which is extremely simple in construction and which is durable and eflicient for the purpose intended.

Other objects and advantages will appear as the specification proceeds, and the novel features of the device will be particularly pointed out in the claims hereto annexed.

My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:

Figure 1 is a side elevation of the device;

Figure 2 is a section along the line 2-2 of Figure 1; and

Figure 3 is a section along the line 3-3 of Figure 1.

In carrying out my invention I provide a rod or needle 1 which is inserted in a sleeve portion 2 of a supporting member 8. A comb indicated generally at 4 is pivoted to the support 3 at 5 and a needle indicated generally at 6 is pivotally secured to the support 3 at 7.

The comb 4 has a U-shaped portion 8 (see Figure 3) with teeth9 formed therein. The comb may be manually swung toward the needle 1 and against the force of a spring 10 so that the teeth 9 will enclose the needle 1 as shown in Figure 3. As soon as the comb 4 is released the spring 10 will swing it back into the full line position as shown in Figure 1.

From the foregoing description of the various parts of the device the operation may be readilyunderstood. Q y

After all of the protectors or clips have been placed in the hair and the hair has been blocked and wet withthe usual lotion, the comb is taken between the thumb and index finger, and the hair from one clip is placed between the comb and the needle, and then the comb and needle are swung toward each other to compress the hair therebetween. The comb is now drawn toward the end of the strand of hair as in the usual manner of combing. After the strand of hair has been combed smoothly, a piece of paper or gauze is placed on the ends of the hair, and then the ends of the hair are placed on the spool and wound thereon.

As the operator winds the hair on the spool, thecombing action is repeated and this will keep the hairs in the strand in their proper places, and will cause the shorter hairs to be fed into the spool at the proper time.

The combing operation is repeated as often as is necessary until all of the hair is evenly distributed and all of the loose ends and bulky hair is wrapped firmly around the spool. One feature of the invention lies in the fact that the comb can be carried entirely around the spool with the hair and then withdrawn by first allowing the comb portion 8 to be urged away from the needle 1 by the spring 10, and then the needle is moved in a longitudinal direction, which is parallel with the axis of the spool. The needle is small enough in diameter so as not to interfere with the tight winding of the hair around the spool. As the operator continues to roll the strand of hair on the spool, he may reverse the position of the comb and use the double needle end to pick up any loose hair ends and to equally distribute this hair. The double needle end of the comb may also be used in wrapping the hair around the spool. The operator, in following out the above steps, will be able to wind the strand of hair tightly and evenly around the spool.

If the operator wishes to use the needles 6 and 1 in place of the comb and needle he can just reverse the device and it will function in exactly the same manner as that described for the comb and needle.

Although I have shown and described one embodiment of my invention it is to be understood that the same is susceptible of various changes and I reserve the right to employ suchv changes as may come within the scope of the claims hereto annexed.

I claim;

1. A comb comprising a needle, a U-shaped member hinged to the needle and having teeth therein, and a spring for yieldingly holding the member at an angle to the needle.
