Description
I UNITED" STATES PATENT oFFIcE GEORGE DECKER, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO THE PHILAD COMPANY, OF
CLEVELAND, OHIO, A CORPORATION OF OHIO APPARATUS FOR HAIR WAVING v Application filed July 18, 1929. Serial No. 379,187.
protector for retaining flat strands of hair adjacent the scalp of the wearer while the halr is being subjected to a waving process.
An object of the invention is to provide an improved clamp or protector in which the parts most subject to deterioration or breakage may be readily replaced.
Another object is to provide an improved clamp or protector whichwill efficiently pre vent the transfer of heat to the scalp of the wearer.
Another object is to provide an improved protector which may be readily and economically manufactured.
Other objects will hereinafter appear.
The invention will be better understood from the description of one practical embodiment illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which: I
Figure 2 is a plan view of the clamp of Figure 1 showing a curling rod used therewith in its operative position;
Figure 3 is a side elevation of the clamp and rod of Figure 2;
Figure 4 is an end elevation of the clamp and rod of Figure 2 taken from the right hand end of this figure;
Figure 5 is an end elevation of the clamp and rod of Figure 2 taken from the left hand end;
Figure 6 is a longitudinal sectional view taken on the line VI-VI of Figure 2;
Figure 7 is a cross sectional view taken on the line VII-VII of Figure 2; and
Figure 8 is an enlarged perspective view of the holder and rubber strip shown in the preceding figures.
The clamp shown comprises two jaws which are pivoted together at one end and are provided with a detachable latching means by which they may be secured at the other end. One of the jaws consists of a channel-shaped arm 1 of sheet metal or other stifi' material while the other consists of a somewhat similar channel-shaped arm 2 which is, however, provided at its outer pper edge with a reentrant bend 3 which constitutes a slot extending throughout its length. 'This slot is open at the top of the arm and is adapted to receive the thickened edge of a pad used to cover a during a waving process.
These two arms are pivoted by means of a rivet 4 passing through lugs formed integral with one end of them, the lugs being .conveniently held apart by washers. The bottom flange of each arm has two downwardly struck lugs 5 which receive upwardly extending L-shaped lugs 6 struck up from channel-shaped retainers 7, the pairs of lugs strand of hair being firmly. united by being pressed together 55 after they have been interlocked. Each retainer carries a bar 8 of heat insulating material, conveniently balsa wood.
The arm 1 has two pairs of transversely extending slots cut through its upper web, through which pass lugs 9 of upwardly extending cradles 10 which are adapted to support a curling rod upon which the hair is wound and maintain the same centered above the opening through the clamp. These lugs are bent over, as best shown in Figure 6, and 4 so securely lock the cradles to the arm. The cradles 10 are each provided with a central corrugation 11 for the pp'rpose of strengthening and stiffening them.
A ratchet spring 12, consisting of a leg 13 extending within arm'x 1 and secured to the web thereof by rivet 14, and an outward upwardly extending end 15 provided with a detent or pawl 16 is carried by arm 1, and arranged to engage the end of a curler rod. The curling rod consists of a tube of substantially hyperboloid of revolution shape 17,, provided with a tongue 18 pivoted to it adjacent one end by rivet 19. The ends of the rod are cylindrical and one end is provided 20 which operate as a ratchet wheel, being engaged by the detent 16.
Arm 2 has at'its free end a projecting tongue 21 consisting of a folded piece of sheet metal, the edges of which abut the re entrant bend to maintain it rigidly in place and which is held within the arm by a rivet 22, the rivet being surrounded by a washer with a series of longitudinally extending slots i 7 7 A hair waving clamp comprising two other arm and preventing the passage of channel-shaped arms pivoted together at one moisture between their ends.
In testimony whereof I hereunto afiix my end with the recesses of the arms facing each other, one of the arms being formed with a reentrant cylindrical fold along its upper outer edge to receive the edge of a pad,-a channel-shaped holder extending within the open edge of each arm, the webs of the holder being turned over to frictionally embrace the edges of the webs of the arm, a strip of resilient material held within the holder and projecting therefrom and having flanges overlying the edges of the arm and holder, and a latch detachably connecting the free ends of the arms together.
8. A hair waving clamp comprising two channel-shaped arms pivoted together at one end with the recesses of the arms facing each other, one of the arms being formed with a reentrant cylindrical fold along its upper outer edge to receive the edge of a pad, a channel-shaped holder extending within the open edge of each arm, the webs of the holder being turned over to frictionally embrace the edges of the webs of the arm, a strip of resilient ma terial held within the holder and projecting therefrom and having flanges overlying the edges of the arm and holder, a bar of heat insulating material carried by and spaced from each arm, and a latch detachably connecting the free ends of the arms together.
9. A hair wavingclamp comprising two channel-shaped arms pivoted together at one end with the recesses of the channels facing each other and detachably connected at the other end, and two cradles having depending lugs extending through the upper flange of one arm and bent over within the same to position a curling rod thereupon.
10. A hair waving clamp comprising two channel-shaped arms pivoted together at one end with the recesses thereof facing each other and detachably connected at the other upon the interior of the free end'of the other when the arms are in closed position.
12. A hair waving clamp comprislng two channel-shaped arms pivoted together at one end with the recesses thereof facing each other, a latch pivoted to the free end of one of said arms, clamping it to the free end of the other arm, and a tongue rigidly attached to the first mentioned arm and closely fitting -within the recess Within the free end of the signature this 17th day of July, 1929.
