WILLIAM L. HESS, OF BELLE PLAINE, IOWA.
IMPROVEMENT lN STOVE-PIPE SHELVES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent. No. 187,274, dated February 13,1877; application filed January 25, 1877.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM L. Hess, of Belle Plaine, in the county of Benton and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stove-Pipe Shelves; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof,
which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, whichform a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a vertical section of my improved stove-pipe shelf and heater, through the dotted line a; a: of Fig. 2, and Fig. 2 is a horizontal section thereof.
Corresponding parts in the two figures are denoted by like letters.
This invention relates to a certain improvement in combined stove-pipe shelves and heaters, and it consists of a drum, cylinder, or other suitable medium, having a central pipe, with which is combined a second pipe and valve or damper, substantially as herein-- after more fully set forth.
In the annexed drawing, A refers to a drum, cylinder, or other suitable medium, having a central pipe, a, for connecting it to the stove and the smoke-pipe. The pipe at opens into the drum or cylinder, as shown at a, to permit the heat to enter the latter, as. hereinafter more fully explained. B is a partition or diaphragm, dividing the drum A horizontally, and having a series of marginal openings, b b, for the upward passage and dissemination of the heat through the upper chamber thereof, as well as the entire drum, for heating or warming any article of food placed thereon, and also the room or apartment. Telescoped within the central pipe at is a second pipe, (3, similarly constructed; '5. e.,having an opening, 0, which registers with the opening a of pipe a, for the purpose of conducting the heat through the latter mentioned opening into the heater or drum A. To the inside of, or other convenient point upon, the pipe 0 is secured a rod, 0, extending through it and a transverse elongated slot, 11, in the pipe a and terminating into a ring, or otherwise provided with a .suitable handle, by which it maybe grasped and manipulated. It Wlll be observed by moving the rod 0' in the direction indicated by the arrows, the respective openings of the pipes at U will be closed, and the heat thus cut ofl' from the drum, and directed up the smoke-pipe, which becomes desirable under certain circumstances, as for 111- stance, in warm weather, &c.
I) is a valve or damper eccentrically hinged or pivoted with reference to the pipes at and O, and is for the purpose of cutting off the upward passage of the heat in the pipe Q, when the openings at c are in a line, and d1- rectiug it into the drum or heater A. To the valve or damper l) is concentrically attached a rod, 0, by pressing which inwardly, as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 2, the valve Wlll be caused to-move in the direction of themrow, and thus close the pipe 0 at that point, the pipe 0 having been first adjusted so as to open the openings at c, bringing about the results above named.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent. is-
1 The drum or cylinder A, provided with the central pipe at, having aperforated diaphragm or plate, B, upon its external circumference and a lateral opening, a, in combination with, and through which, the damper D, enters the pipe at, to disseminate the heat, substantially as set forth.
2. The drum or cylinder A, having the perforated or open pipe at, in combination with the movable open pipe (3,.substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. The drum or cylinder A, having the open central pipe at, in combination with the movable, open pipe 0, having a rod, 0, passing through a slot, d, in pipe a, and damper D, having a rod, 6, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimonythat I claim the foregoing asmy own, I hereunto affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
WM. L. HESS. Witnesses:
GEORGE HUSTON, DANIEL WEYAND.
