AIR-HEATING- AND COOKING STOVE.

a Specication of Letters Patent No. 3,492, dated March 16, 1844.

To all inhum/ may` concern Be it known that I, Jol-iN VOOLLEY, of`

Springfield, in the rcounty of Hampden and State of iMassachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in warming rooms, Sac., in combination with a winter and surnmerlcoolting-stove or other heating apparatus; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompany-ing drawing, which forms a part of this speciication, in which Figure l, is a perspective view;` Fig. 2, outer pipe detached.

The nature of my invention consists in providing a stove (c) having a common pipe ortunnel (l2) which passes up through the root ot the building on the lower floor ot which the stove (c) should be situated, with a covering "(0) consisting ot a double case of tin orother suitable material, of any desirable size or `forni; on one side` of this case is a door (d) that opens into the case, which is also made double like the other parts of the case. The outer and inner plates s and s forming the case double, should have a space between them of aboutytwo or three inches, and have the air ot the room in which it is situatedfreely admitted between them from below, as the direction of the arrows indicate, the bottom being lett open for that purpose, at the bottom of the door a -row of holes 0, 0,0, are made to admit air between the outer and inner plates and at top similar holes admit the exit ot the air into the interior. The pipe (L) from the stove (a) passes up through the interior of the case (o) and out through the double top and out through the roof, within the chamber of the case there is an opening (72') intothe said pipe through which the eltluvia steam, &c., from cooking pass ott. Fromthe top `of the case upward there is a pipe (f) of larger diameter than the. stove pipe, which surf rounds it, and is intended tor carrying off all the heated air from the sides and top of the case with the interior of whichit communicates; this pipe `has lateral ones (see g, Fig. 2,-) for conducting the heated air. into the upperapartmentswhich pipes can be closed withthe Stoppers (m), `near the root, there is a valvebox (7L) in which are two common slide valves (o). When all the heat is to` be retained in the house these valves are closed which prevent the i heat from escaping out of the top of the chimney; by opening them a free egress is given to the heated air and the house is kept cool while cooking in the stove in the warmest weather. `X represents a chimney cap of ordinary construction whichfits over the outside pipe to assist the draft; (is) 1s a damper placed in the stove pipe of ordinary construction; itV is just above the case and the handle only is shown in the drawings. On the top of the valve case there is a sliding. valve (-v) which cuts od the communication between the case and pipe (f) and letting the air into the room below in the front of this pipe 'there are apertures (Q) for admitting cold air to thef space between. the tunnels which prevent their heating too much.

The space inside the case abovethe stove serves as an oven, and is furnished with shelves or partitions (630,) which are removable at pleasure during the process of baking, the door is closed, as it should be while cooking' in warm weather when the heat is to be kept out of the house. The case (c) closely` ts the stove and is made toconform to the kind of stove used. By this arrangement nearly all the heat Vand offensive scent is carried ol in warm weather; and any degree of `heat within the compass of the stove can be imparted to the building in which it is placed as desired.

The pipes may have elbows in any portion of their length to suit the structure in which it is placed, and if required a pipe may be added outside the other two.

What I claimas my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. The combination of the case (c) and stove (a) in the manner described; the pipe ot the stove passing up through the center of the case, and having a hole thereinfor the purpose set forth.

2. VI also claim carrying the two pipes (b, and f,) out above the roof together and covering them both with a cap, constructed, `combined and arranged in the manner and for the purpose herein described.

3. I `claim in combinationwith the above the valve box (7L) and valves (o) near the top ofthe house for closing the outer pipes.
