E. KIRK.
, Cooking Stove.
Patented May 3, 1870.

15mm can.
EDWARD KIRK, OF SHARON, PEJHSYLV'ANIA.
Letters Patent N 102,683, dated May 3, 1870.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, EDWARD KIRK, of Sharon, in the county of Mercer and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cooking-Stoves; and 1 do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification, in which-- Figure l is a longitudinal vertical section of a cooking-stove constructed in accordance with my invention, and
Figure 2 is a transverse section of the same, as indicated by the line at a: in fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both figures.
This invention consists, firstly, in a combination with the water-back of a stove or range, of an elevated reservoir, which serves both as an oven or hot chamher or closet, and to supplythe water-back withwater.
It consists, secondly, of a perforated steam-pipe, which passes from the steam room in the upper part of the reservoir, into and along the front part of the fire-place, to serve both as a safety-valve, and to increase the draught in the fire-place.
It consists, thirdly, in providing the top of the oven with an opening and corresponding valve whereby steam can be admitted into said oven if desired.
To enable others skilled in the art to construct cooking-stoves in accordance with myinvcution, I will proceed to describe the same with reference to the drawing.
A is a cooking-stove of ordinary construction.
B is its fire-place, which is provided with a hollow water-back, G. This water-back may be constructed of any suitable material, and made to fit differently constructed fire-places.
It is kept constantly full of water by means of a supply-pipe, D, said pipe passing from the top of the fire-back 0 through the side of the stove and to the under side of a reservoir, E.
This reservoir is placed conveniently near to the stove and is firmly attached thereto, or may have an independent footing. It is constructed in such a manner that it will have an open space in the middle to constitute an oven, F, the water and steam room surrounding it, but having one or both ends open to be of a slide-valve, c, which is operated from the outside .in the usual manner.
An opening, Z, in the top of the reservoir E, is made for the purpose of enabling the reservoir to be supplied with fresh water.
This opening can be closed tightly by means of" a screw-cap, e, or otherwise. 1
G is a steam-pipe, which is passed from the steamroom of the reservoir E through the side of the stove into and along the front of the 'fire-plaoe of the same, where that portion of the pipe G is provided with small holes to allow the surplus steam to escape therethrough, thus forming a safety-valve for the reservoir, and a means for a more thorough combustion in the fire-place.
H is a faucet, screwed into the reservoir near its bottom, to enable hot water to be drawn therefrom.
I is a blow-ofi cock secured close to the bottom of the water-back, passing through the side of the stove. for the purpose of cleaning out said water-back, if required.
By mea-nsof the opening I) in the oven F, and the slide-valve 0, cooking can be done in said oven with steam or dry heat.
\Vhat is here claimed and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is-- 1. The combination with the water-back O of the elevated reservoir E, surrounding-aml serving to heat the oven or hot closet F.
2. The opening I), and valve 0, in connection with the oven or hot closet F, substantially as and for the purpose herein described.-
3. The perforated steam-pipe G, in connection with the reservoir E, substantially as and for the purpose herein set forth.
EDWARD KIRK. Witnesses:
O. E. TRIBLEY, G130. S. KIRK.
