This invention relates, generally, to improvements in that class of tools for use by carpenters, draftsmen, and others, as a Combined square, bevel and level, and which may be further used for scribing lines, circles, and arcs of circles, and as a means forfinding centers; and, the present invention has reference, more particularly, to a novel and simply constructed. combination tool of the. character hereinafter set forth, and for the above stated uses, which is adapted to be readily and quickly mounted in an operative relation to a carpenters rule, and is just as quickly detached therefrom.
The invention has for its principal objects to provide a novel and simply constructed tool which is especially adapted as. level or a plumbing means,and which is readily attachable to or detachable from the usual carpenters rule, to be used as a square, a bevel, and for many other similar uses;
Other objects of the present invention no at this time more particularly enumerated will be more fully understood from the following detailed description of the present invention. f
' With the various objects. of the present invention inview, the said invention consists, primarily, in the novel and simple compound tool and rule-attachment hereinafter set forth; and, the said invention consists, furthermore, in the novel arrangements and combinations of the various devices and parts thereof, as well as in the details of the construction of the'sa-id parts, all; of which will be more fully described in the following specification, and then finally embodied 1n the clauses of the claims, which are appended to and which form an essential part of the said specification.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a plan view of a combination tool made according to and embodying the principles of the present inventiomthe same being shown attached in an operative position to a carpenters rule; Figure 2 is a similar View of the combination, tool detached from the rule; Figure 3 is a top edge view of the same; and Figure 4 is a horizontal sectional representation. of they tech-said section beingtaken on line. 44 in said. to indicate corresponding parts. v Referring now to the several figures'ofthe drawings,.the referencecharacter 1 indicates a complete. combination tool or rule attach ment, showing'one embodiment of theprinciples of the present invention, the device, in general, being of a triangular configuration, as shown in Figures 1, 2 and 5., and comprisinga base-member consisting of anjarrangement of lower. bars or members 2 and 3, and I the intermediate connecting members a and 5., arranged at 45 degrees between themembers 2 and 3,.so as to provide an angle of degrees between the members 4 and 5. At the ends of the respective members 2 and 3. are right-angled members .6 and 7, from which extend the members 8 and 9, meeting in a. point, aslO, said members 8v and 9 being also disposed at. 45 degrees to the plane of the lower faces of said bars or members 2and 3. Extending downwardly and vertically from the lower surface-portion of said body-member 12, and. respectively connected with the upper surfaceportions of the bars or new bers2and 3, are other members, as. 16,
the member 16 being also vertically channelled or grooved, for the securing therein of another spirit-level, as 17 or the like, to be used for plumbing purposes, as Will be evident. The said member 16 is also provided with a curved or arc-shaped portion 18 for exposing a portion of said level 17.
Referring now to Figures 2 and 4 of the drawings, it will be seen that the member 15 is provided with a perforation or hole 19, in which is arranged the shank of a screw 20. Pivotally mounted upon a post or stud 22, is a lever or arm 23, having an arc-shaped surface-portion 24, and a fiange'25, extending at a right angle from the rear face of said leveror arm, and under normal initial conditions lying adjacent to and bearing against the side-face of the member 15,substantially as shown in said Figure 4. The said lever or arm 23 is also provided with a hole or perforation 26, in alinement with the hole or perforation 19, the screw 20 also extending through the hole or perforation 26. Upon that portion of the screw extending beyond the flange 25, is a coiled spring 27, maintained in a suitably compressed relation upon the screw, between the said flange and the head of the screw, by a nut 28 adjustably disposed upon the screw-threaded shankportion of the screw projecting from the side of the member 15, as indicated insaid Figure 4 of the drawings. As shown, the member 12 at its juncture with member 16 is provided with a retaining guide-lug or projection 29, and in alinement with said guidelug or projection 29, at the junction of the members 5 and 16, is another retaining guidelug or projection 30, between which two guide-lugs and the curved or convex surfaceportion 24 of the pivoted and spring-controlled arm or lever 23, a folded carpenters rule 31, or the like, can be forcibly sprung and suitably held by frictional holding engagement, as will be fully understood from an inspection of Figure 1 of the drawings.
The manner of thus securing the combination tool in its detachable relation to a carpenters rule will readily be seen from an inspection of said Figure 1; and, the manner of employing the attachment as a square, a bevel, or as a means for leveling and plumbing purposes, as well as for scribing circles and arcs of circles will be readily understood, and any further description of the same is therefore deemed unnecessary.
If desired, the tool or rule-attachment may be provided with an auxiliary rule, as 32,
which may be used also as a me'ans for scribing or drawing lines at various angles to the planes lying in the outer surface-portions of the members 2 and 3, and also of the members 7 and 9, as will be evident from an inspection more particularly of Figure 5 of the drawings. 7
To this end, the member 9, and portions of the members 2 and 8, are suitably slotted, as at 33, as indicated in Figures 5 and 6, the angular portion formed at the junction of the members 3 and 9, being provided with inwardly extending perforated ears 34, having a space between them, and being provided with a pin 35, extending across said space. Disposed in said space, and oscillatorily mounted upon the said pin 35 is a portion 36 of the said rule 32, the angular portions of the said rule being suitably shaped, so that when the rule is swung into its closed position within the slot 33, there will be no projecting portions of the rule from the base and sides of the main tool or attachment 1. As shown, the pin 35 has a screw-threaded portion extending beyond the outer face of one of theears 34, upon which is placed a wingnut' 37, or other suitably formed binding means, for maintaining the auxiliary rule in closed, or in its various angular relations to the main tool or attachment 1, as will be clearly evident. As shown, the rule 32 may be provided with graduations 38, and the arcshaped edge-portion 39 of the end-member 36 may also be formed with a mark, as 40, adapted to register with a series of graduations 41 upon the ear 34 for variously setting the rule 32 at any desired angle. I
Of course I am aware that some changes may be made in the general arrangements and combinations of the several devices and parts, as well as in the details of the construction of the said parts, without departing from the scope of the present invention as set forth in the foregoing specification, and as defined in the clauses of the claims which are appended thereto. Hence, I do not limit my present invention to the exact arrangements and combinations of the various devices and parts, as described in the said specification, nor do I confine myself to the exact details of the construction of the said parts, as illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
I claim 1. A combination tool of the character set forth, comprising a horizontal base-member V and angularly disposed side-members, a vertically disposed member extending from said base-member, said vertically disposed member being provided with a perforation, a clamping lever pivotally connected with said base-member, said lever being provided with a right-angled flange adjacent said vertically disposed member, said flange being provided with a perforationin alinement with the perforation in said. member, an adjusting screwin said alined perforations, said screw being provided with ahead, a coiled spring upon said screw between the head thereof and the said flange, and an adjusting nut upon the free end-portion of said screw.
2. In a device of the character set forth, a frame comprising a horizontal base member, two angularly disposed side members, and a vertical member secured to said base member, one surface of said frame being equipped at one side of the center line with guide lugs, a clamping lever pivotally mounted on said frame at the other side of the center line and being provided with a stop flange adapted to engage said vertical member, a spring and means whereby said spring is supported by said frame, said spring being adapted to force said lever toward said guide lugs.
3. In a device of the character set forth, a frame comprising a base member, two angularly disposed side members and a body portion member between said side members, one surface of said frame being equipped at one side of the center line with guide-lugs, a connecting member joining said base and body portion member, a lever pivotally mounted on said surface at the other side of the center line and provided at one edge with an arcshaped surface portion, a guide screw secured to said connecting member, and a spring mounted on said guide screw and adapted to urge said lever in the direction of said guide-lugs.
4. In a device of the character set forth, a substantially triangular frame comprising a base member, two angularly disposed side members, and bracing members therebetween, one side surface of said frame being equipped at one side of the center line with guide-lugs, a lever pivotally mounted on said surface at the other side of the center line and normally extending substantially parallel with said line, said lever being provided at the edge facing said line with an arc-shaped surface portion, a spring, and means whereby said spring is supported on said frame, said spring being adapted to force said lever in the direction of said guideugs.
5. In a device of the character set forth, a substantially triangular frame comprising two angularly disposed side members, a horizontal base member connecting said side members and a vertical member at one side of the center line of the frame, a lever pivotally secured to the frame adjacent to and normally extending substantially parallel to said vertical member and having at the edge facing said center line-an arc-shaped portion and having at the other edgea flange adapted to engage said vertical member, guidelugs secured to the frame on the opposite side of said center line, a spring, and means whereby said spring is supported by said frame, said spring being adapted to urge said lever in the direction of the guide-lugs.
6. In a combination-tool of the character set forth, a frame comprising a horizontal base member, two angularly disposed side members, and two vertical members, one of said vertical members being provided at its central portion with a spirit-level and at its end portions with guide-lugs, and a lever pivotally secured to the frame adjacent one opposite edge adapted to engage said vertical member, a spring, and means whereby said spring is supported by the frame, said spring serving to press the lever toward the guidelugs.
7. A tool comprising an open triangular frame having spaced lugs on one side face, an elongated jaw pivoted at one end to the frame at a point opposite one of the lugs and extending towards a corresponding point opposite the other lug and a spring to press the jaw toward the lugs, the jaw being provided on the edge opposite the lugs with a rounded face whereby a rule can be inserted lengthwise between the jaw and the lugs and held by the jaw in its adjusted positions.
