Description

Au 28, 1934. E. o. CLARK COMBINATION TOOL Filed Oct. 17, 1930 fdzzfarda 67a 7'14 ATTORNEY Patented Aug. 28, 1934 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 1 Claim.
My present invention has reference to a combination tool for carpenters use, and my object is the provision of a tool for this purpose that comprises a number of associated parts so that the same is capable of attaining a number of functions which ordinarily require a separate instrument or tool for obtaining desired results. The invention, and the advantages thereof can be best understood from a perusal of the following detailed description which is to be taken in connection with the accompanying drawing and in which: 7
Figure 1 is a plan view of the improvement.
Figure 2 is a side elevation thereof.
Figure 3 is an end view thereof.
As disclosed by the drawing the improvement is small in size and comprises parts which are foldable one over the other so that the tool provides only a small package which may be readily stored in a workmans kit when not required for use. The tool may be constructed of any desired material and includes a base 1 of a desired length. The base is hollow as at 2 for a distance from the bottom thereof and has its top provided with a longitudinal depression or recess 3, the lower wall provided by the depression being formed with an elongated slot or opening 4, the said opening extending through one end of the base as does the recess 3.
Arranged for sliding movement in the recess 3 there is a slide 5. The slide 5 carries on its outer end a removable scribing element 6 and the pointed end of the said element is designed to be received in the opening 4, when the slide is moved fully into the recess 3 in the base 1. The scribing element 6 is in the nature of an angle member and is attached to the slide 5 by removable means such as a bolt engaged by a nut, the pointed end of the scriber being projected beyond the under face of the slide.
The slide 5 has its end opposite that provided with the scribing element 6 thickened, as at 7,
and the sides of this thickened portion have inscribed thereon scales 8 as well as upper lines or marks 9.
The head 10 of the slide attaching bolt is ar-- ranged in the hollow base 1 and the shank of the said bolt passes through the slot 4 and through an elongated slot 11 in the slide. The shank of the bolt is threaded and is engaged by a knurled nut 12 which holds the slide adjusted on the base. The enlarged end 7 of the slide has embedded in the top thereof a screw 13 which is engaged by a knurled nut 14, and the screw passes through a longitudinal slot 15 in the upper element of the improvement which is in the nature of a rule 16. On one of its ends the plate comprising the rule 16 has arranged on its outer face a block 17 held on the rule scale through the medium of a pivot bolt 18 which is engaged by a knurled nut 19.
The rule 16 is provided with a round opening disposed on its longitudinal center line and constituting an observation opening through which the marks 9 on the enlargement 7 may be observed. The marks 9 are disposed on opposite sides of the enlargement and if the rule be swung to one side or the other of the enlargement around the stud 13, one or the other of the marks 9 will be exposed through the opening 20 and when the diagonal mark 21 on the face of rule is brought into registration with the selected mark 9, the rule will be disposed at an angle of 45 with respect to the base 1 and may then be used to mark off miters.
The marks 21 are arranged in crossing relation with their points of crossing lying in the center of the hole or opening 20 and are inscribed diagonally across the face of the rule at angles of 45 with the edge thereof.
When the rule is disposed transversely to the enlargement 7, so as to be at right angles with the base 1, it is not only secured in place by the nut 14 but is efiectively locked in position by the use of the block 17. But under this condition, the block 17 is removed from that end of the rule to which it is shown in the drawing as connected and is applied to the rule by having the stud 18 extended through the slot 15, when it may be brought into abutting engagement with the face of the enlargement and its nut 19 tightened to hold it in such abutting position. The rule is thus effectively secured against being swung out of its right-angular position, since it is then not maintained in such position merely by the clamping action of the nut 19.
Having described the invention, I claim:
A tool of the kind indicated comprising connected angularly related members, one of which is provided with an upstanding stud extending through a longitudinal slot in the other, a clamping nut engaged with the stud and bearing upon the slotted member for holding it at any adjusted angular position relative to the stud carrying member, the stud carrying member being formed with flat faces on opposite vertical sides, and a detachable block having a stud insertable through the slot of the slotted member and a nut engageable with the stud to bear on the slotted member to secure the detachable block thereto with a vertical face of the block in contact with a fiat face of the stud carrying member, whereby the slotted member and the stud carrying member may be fixedly secured in right angular relationship.
