Description

Aug. 1932. 1 W. MORLEY HINGE Filed March 16, 1952 Patented ug. 9, '1932 UNITED i JUIS W. MRLEY, OF TRENTON, NEW JERSEY, .ASSIGNOR TO C'. V. HILL & GO., INC.,f 'j
OF TRENTON, NEW JERSEY, A CORPORATION OF NEW JERSEY HINGE Application led March 16, 1932. Serial No. 599,257.
This invention rela-tes to hinges, and its main object is to provide a simple, strong, durable and efficient joint between the hinge leaves whereby the leaves are hingedly united and limited in their swinging movement relative to each other.
The invention further has for its object to provide a hinge for use on refrigerator doors and for other like uses, which is durable and inexpensive in construction and substantially proof against sagging, and which possesses a pleasing and attractive form and appearance.
The invention consists of the features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts, hereinafter fully described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in which Fig. 1 is a front elevation of a hinge embodying my invention, and
Fig. 2 is a horizontal transverse section of the same, showing the closed and open positions of the swinging leaf in full and dotted lines, respectively.
In carrying my invention into practice I provide a hinge comprising a pair of leaves 1 and 2, cast or molded of suitable metal or a metal alloy, and provided or not, as required, with a finishing coating or plating. The leaves 1 and 2 are respectively designed for application to a wall 3 and a door l of a refrigerator or other receptacle, as indicated in dot and dash lines in Fig. 2, the leaves being provided with openings 5 for the passage of suit-able fastenings to secure them in position.
The leaf 1 is provided with a pair of outwardly and horizontally projecting and vertically spaced knuckle flanges 6 having alined pin receiving openings 7 therein, and also having openings 8, arranged inwardly of and in transverse alinement with the openings 7 to receive a stop pin 9 extending between the flanges. The flanges 6 are of substantial size and character so that the hinge member 2 and part to which it is attached may be stably supported from the hinge member 1.
The hinge member 2 is provided with a centrally disposed reduced tongue 10, projecting beyond its inner edge and having an outer end portion 11 projecting rearwardly at substantially a right angle to the plane of the link 2 and kterminating in a stop flange 12. The tongue 10 and a portion of the leaf 2 in alinement therewith are formed with an outwardly projecting reinforcing offset 13, of 'A knuckle ears 6, thus hingedly connecting the leaf 2 with the leaf l for swinging movements te a closed position in which the leaf 2 is parallel with the leaf 1 and to an open positionin which the leaf 2 lies at an angle of 90 j or more to the leaf l.
It will be seen that the construction described provides a solid and substantial mounting for the leaf 2 on the leaf l, as the knuckle plates 6 and 15 are of generous area andthickness so as to provide staunch supl' ports for the pivot pins 17, which may accordingly be made of large diameter to ensure a firm and secure pivotal connection of the leaves with one another. It will also be ,seen that the described form and arrange-'- ment of the pivot pin 17 and thestop pin 9 provides ample space for the turning movements of theknuckle flanges in the swinging movements of the leaf 2, as well as the swinging movements ofthe stop flange 12, and that i said stop flange 12 in the closed position of the leaf 2 substantially closes the space between the knuckle flanges 6 at the outer side and, when the leaf 2 is swung fully open to the dotted line position shown in Fig. 2, the flange 12 is brought into abutting engagement with the stop pin 9 to positively limit `the outward swinging movement of the leaf 2. It will further be seen that the described construction of the knuckle flanges l5, and the provision of the offset portion 13,enables said anges 15 to be made of comparatively large size so that such parts of the hinge leaf 2 will give a high degree of strength, stabil- Aity and firmness to the joint connection.' j A' yso hinge,in theform disclosed, and in permissible modified forms, may be designed for use upon various kinds and types of recepture.
of the tongue projecting between the knuckle ianges of the first-named leaf, and a pintle pin engaging the openings in the knuckle flanges of the leaves and pivotally connecting said leaves, the said stop flange of the secondnamed leaf being adaptedfto engage the stop pin of the firstnamedleaf to limitzthe relative swinging movement of the leaves.
In testimony whereof, I affix my signa- LOUIS MORLEY.
tacles for hingedly supporting doors and oth` er like closures. j Y that, while the structure shown is preferred,
echanges in the form, proportions and details of construction may be made, within the scope of the appended claims, without de- 20 -parting from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
. What I claim is Y Y 1. A hinge comprising a pair of leaves, one
lleaf having a pair of knuckle flanges extending forwardly therefrom iii spaced relation land a stop pin carried by said flanges, and -the other leaf having at one end thereof a tongue bent rearwardly substantially at right angles thereto and provided with lateral knuckles extending between and pivoted to Athe said knuckle flanges and having a stop :flange for engagement with the said stop pin atthe limit of swinging movement of the second-named leaf.
2. A hinge comprising a pair of leaves, one leaf having a pair of knuckle aiiges extending forwardly therefrom in spaced relation and a stop pin carried by said flanges, and the other leaf having at one end thereof a centrally disposed tongue bent rearwardly substantially at right angles thereto and terminating in a stop flange and also having flanges projecting inwardly and laterally .from said tongue and between the said knuckle flanges, and a pintle pin connecting the knuckle flanges of the; leaves, the said stop flange of the second-named leaf being ladapted for engagement with the saidstop pin at the limit of swinging movement of the second-named leaf.
V3. A hinge comprising a pair of leaves, one
*leaf having a pair of forwardlyprojecting knuckle flanges provided with pin receiving openings and a stop pin extending between said flanges on the inner side of and in trans- It is also to be understood j verse alinement with said openings, and the other leaf having a centrally disposed tongue provided with an outwardly projecting reinforcing boss, said tongue being bent rear- Vwardly at its free end substantiallyat rightV angles to the leaf and terminating in a stop flange, said boss being of less depth than the tongue and forming top and bottom reinforcing ianges having lateral enlargements providing knuckle flanges having pin receiv- :ingopenings at the inner side of the free end
