fFig. 6 is a partial section on the line 6 6 of'Fig.- 45 4: and
Fig. '7 isl a view similar to Fig. I showing an-` other Inioclication.
In the accompanying drawing, haveindicated at --IU a'l part of thebody oi.' a motorkvehicle; 5o and at'I'I, a door mounted in connection with the body I0 by. 'lone'pofmy improved hingesI I2 shown in Figs. 1`, 2 andV` 3 of vthe drawing and wth'a modified form or hinge I2a shown in Figs. 4, .5 and (i.A The door II is provided with a projecting 55 ilange- I3 at the hinged side thereof to close the space formedbetween adjacent walls I4 and I5 of the door and body of the vehicle respectively. Tir'ehinge' shown -in Figs. 1 to 3 inclusive consists of a housing butt part I6 anda hook-shaped arm I1 which is movably coupled with the hous- 5 ing I6 by links I8 and I9 arranged on fixed pivot pins 20 and 2I respectively in the housing I6 or the top and bottom'walls 22 and 23 thereof,
'whereas the free ends of said links are pivotally supported in connection with pins 24 and 25 10 mounted' in connection with the hook-shaped butt part II, thepin projecting beyond the upper and lower surfaces of the link I8 and butt part I1 and adapted to be slidably mounted in arcshaped or semi-circular channels 26 formed on 15 the inner vadjacent surfaces of the top and vbottom walls 22 and 23 of the butt housing I6.
' The top and 'bottom walls of the butt housing I6 are joined at onel side by a vertical wall 21 which forms a substantially U-shaped body of said housing. The forward .edges of said top and bottom walls have iaterallyextending flanges 28 to provide for'the attachment or mounting of said buttv I6 in connectionwwith thefbody I0 of the vehicle by welding,.riveting or by screws or bolts in customary ways. The grooves 26 open v outwardly through one side oi' the top and bottom walls 22 andf'23 asindicated at 29,-Fig. 2 `of .the drawing, to lfacilitate the mounting of the pin 24j thelEll. l f 30 In` Fig. 3 of the drawing, 'the top and vbottom walls 22 and 23 are drawn inwardly to form bushings 30 around the pins 20, 2| so as to provide.
longer bearings for the pins in said plates, and
at the same time, to provide additional ybearings l 1 sheetmetal parts whichmay be welded or other- `wise secured together, namely, an fouter relaf tively thin hood part 3| and an inner heaviery elongated strip'or sheet 32 fashioned toform the desiredcurvature of. the hook-shaped part I1.
The-outer side wan sa ofthe part al is of a simil bearing 34 which iits within arecess 35 formed 50 rat the corresponding end portion of the link I8 in the manner clearly illustrated rin Fig'. 3 of the drawing. The central portion of the part 32 is cut. and curled to formanother cylindrical pintlel bearing 36 arrangedin the same 55 6.0.18 and I9.
butt member or'housing Ila substantially simi- 31 formed in the link. I9 as indicated in Fig. 2. 'Ihe upper and lower edges of the part 32 and 5 upper and lower surfaces of the links I8 and I9 iit snugly within the upper and lower walls 38 and 39 of the' hood part 3I of the butt I1.
These walls are of the contour clearlyindhated in Fig.,1 of the drawing and form a chamber or recess inwardly of the part 32 and between the walls 38 and 39 in which the links I8 and I9 are concealed. From the point 4|! at the free end of the butt part` I1 to the point 4I, the v outer wall 33 of the part'3I covers and conceals the hinge parts'at theouter exposed sur.- *facethereot so as to render the links I8 Vand I9 substantially invisible from the door` opening when the door` is in open position.
'I'he other end of the part 32 is provided with an angularly arranged attaching: plate portion. 425having upper and lower projecting anges 43 'over which the topandbottom plates 38 and 38 are adapted to pass, and pins 44 are adapted to be passed through the plates 38, 39, ilanges 43, and through amounting plate 45 for detachably coupling the butt I1 with the door II.
The plate 45 is welded, rivets or otherwise secured-to the wall I4 of the door to constitute a lmore or less permanent part thereof and provides means including the pins 44 for detachably mounting the butt I1.
By reason of the construction employed, the;
butt I1 may be produced at a very nominal cost, especially in employing the thin shell or hood part 3| which may be readily shaped into the U-shaped cross sectional contour employed throughout the length of the hook-shaped arm portion of said butt, whereas the heavier part 32 simply in the form of a strip which is curled to form the pintle bearings 34 and 3 6 and 'fashioned to form the attaching flanges.' Where direct connection of the part I1 with the supportl'is desired, the flanges 43 and plate 45 is eliminated. However, in some forms of construction, it may be desirable to construct the hook-shaped butt partfrom a single body. in which event, the same may be formed from a heavy sheet of metalby die forming or coining or by a forging operation, o'r in some cases, the same may constitute a cast or molded body.
In Figs. 4, 5 and 6 'of the drawing, I have shown at 48 a butt member-substantially similar -in general contour to the member I1 shown in Figs. 1l to 3 inclusive, but which consists in a unitary body having a continuous outer side wall 41 having top and' bottom walls 48 to which the links I8a, I9a.are pivoted on pins 24a, 25a. The ends of the links 18a, I 9a arranged on said pivot pins. are solid and not cut away as with the links The pins 24a and 25a are supported )n the top and bottom walls 48 ofthe butt 46.
'ielbutt 48 is detachably coupled with a coupling or mounting plate 45a substantially similar tothe plate 45,v by pins 44a which pass downwardly through the walls 48 or upper and lower extensions48a thereof which form mount# ing llanges similar to the ilanges 43 of the butt Withthe hinge shown inFlgs. 4, 5 and 6, a
lar to the housing Itis employed, the only difference'beingthat the bushings or bearings 38a sllghtlyvlonger to compensate for the u `diilcrence inptbickness of the metal at ythe top 'other parts vol' the'hinge, inv proper condition at u 2,oe2,a4o l and bottom of the buttmember 48. In said sists of an outer hook-shaped shell portion'5lcomposedA of relatively thinmetal and an inner thicker butt part 52 in the form of a strip of metal curled at one end to form a pintle bearing 53 similar to the bearing 34. The other end Vportion of said strip is extended' angularly to form an attaching plate portion 54 which may be screwed, bolted or otherwise secured to a suitable supDOrting frame. l lindrical pintle bearing 36 shown in Figs. 1 to.3
substituted for the cyinclusive, I employ a cylindrical pintle bearing 55 formed on a separate st'rip or plate 56 which r is fashioned to t within the strip 52'including the attaching plate portion 54 thereof and may be welded or riveted thereto. 'I'he outer 52 including the bearing portions 53 and 55, the
latter constituting part .of the strip 56.
substitute for theY links I8 and I9 shown in Figs; l to 3 inclusive sheet metal links 51 and 58, the link 51 having cylindrical bearings at its ends, one of which operates upon a pin 59 passed through the bearing 53 and also' through the top and bottom walls of the shell part 5I. The other cylindrical bearing of the link 51 operates on a pin 60 mounted in the butt member 49 as indicated in Fig. 7. 'Ihe link 58 is offset centrally thereof as indicated at 6I and with the structure shown in Fig. '1. I also,
is provided with cylindrical pintle bearings at its ends, one mounted upon a pin 82 which also passes through the bearing 55 in the top and bottom lwalls of the butt part 5I. 'Ihe cylindrical bearing at the other end of the link 58 is mounted upon a pin 63 supported in the Links of the general constructio of the links 51 may be substituted for the links I construction of a more economi With all forms of hinges shown, lprovi'de hook'- shaped butt parts having hollow or recessed jside Y surfaces closed by an outer hood/wall and top and bottom walls which conceal the links of the hinge from view at the door opening when thedoor is in open position, thus producing a'neat and nished appearance and maintaining 'the paint, lacquer or other nish coating which may bl? applied to said hookeshaped'arm as well as type of hinge.
all times. A hook-shaped hinge butt ofthe crosssectional contour employed will be strong and durablein use, and by reason of the manner of constructing the same, may be sold at a low price, making it possible to utilize concealed hinges in the mounting of doors or swinging members in connection with their supports, whichV would otherwise be impossible by virtue of the cost of production of hinges' of the concealed type under the methods heretofore known.
In addition to the strength, economy and .apf
ished appearance at all times. My invention is not limited to the particular cross sectional contour of the hook-shaped butt member herein disclosed, nor to the specic form and arrangement of the links and the butt housing employed, as these parts will -be modified to suit the particularitype of installation employed and the swing or throw of the hinge desired.
