In the construction shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the links I6 and l'l are of such width as to fill the space between the bearing plates or walls H, l5 of the respective butt parts, said bearing plates or walls being in the same alinement thus permitting the use of links of the same width throughout, clearly to be seen upon a consideration of Fig. 2 of the drawing.
In Figs. 3, 4, and 5, of the drawing I have shown a slight modification of the structure shown in Figs. 1 and 2, wherein the links Ilia and l'la are of laminated construction, or in other words, which consists of two or more separate sheet metal parts arranged one upon the other. The butt part 9a has its bearing plates or arms lla. disposed in closer arrangement to each other than in Fig. 2 as is also true of the hook arm Ida of the butt part Illa. It will be understood that any spacing may be provided between the bearing plates and a greater or lesser number of the laminations provided in the links |60. and lla.
Aside from the size of the parts 9a, Illa, and the use of the laminated links l 6a, lla, the structure shown in Figs. 3, 4, and 5 will operate in the same manner as the structure shown in the other figures. It will be understood that the separate parts of the links Ia, lla, may be welded or otherwise secured together.
It will be understood that the illustration in the accompanying drawing is simply to designate possible arrangements and construction of the hinge parts, it being apparent that the contour of the butt parts and the links may be modified to suit other mountings and uses of the hinge.
With the construction shown it will be understood that as the closure 6 is moved from its closed position, the linkage between the butts 9 and IU will cause the closure to rst move to the right, as viewed in Fig. l, and at the same time swing upwardly and outwardly'through a relatively wide arc producing what may be termed a wide throw hinge. The initial movement to the right provides free release of the closure from its support while at the same time, in moving the closure into its closed position, a more perfect seating or nesting of the closure in the support is provided by reason of the movement to the left which tends to bring the abutting edges as at 8 into close engagement with each other.
With the linkage construction employed, it will be apparent that the free end of the hook-shaped arm I4 swings in a true arc governed by the straight link 6 whereas the remainder of the butt swings in an irregular arc which causes the hook-shaped link l1 to move from the position shown in full lines to a position within the channel of the hook-shaped arm as indicated in dotted lines in swinging the hinge from the closed to the open position. This construction produces the outward throw and outward swing of the closure as will be apparent. It will also be` understood that the hinge will assume a substantial self-sustaining position when in open position by virtue of the arrangement of the links between the respective butts. When the swinging member or door is in closed position, the link l1 or the offset portion thereof will engage the link I6 adjacent the pivot 2U and prevent rattling or relative movement of said butt.
-It will be understood that the operations of the hinge shown in Figs. 1 and 2 above referred to are also true with regard to the structure shown in Figs. 3, 4, and 5. It will also appear that the several parts of the hinge may be made in any desired manner, the sheet metal parts herein shown being merely illustrative of one of the several types and methods of constructing the hinge.
Having fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
l. A motor vehicle hinge for use in supporting the door or closure of a trunk compartment in connection with the body of a vehicle, said hinge comprising a butt secured to the vehicle body, another butt secured to the closure, both butts having attaching plate portions arranged substantially in the same plane, the attachment of the butt to said closure being in widely spaced relation to said vehicle body, the last mentioned butt being provided with a hook-shaped arm extending in the direction of and overlapping the iirst named butt, links pivotally coupled with the first and second named butts, in that section or area thereof which overlap, the free end of the hook-shaped arm joining the central portion of the first named butt in a straight link,
and the free end of the rst named butt joining the hook-shaped arm inwardly of the free end thereof with a hook-shaped link, to provide swinging movement of said arm through an arcshaped path in the operation of moving the closure from a closed to an open position.
2. A hinge of the class described comprising two butts, each butt having attaching plate portions, a hollow hook-shaped arm projecting to one side of the attaching plate portion of one butt in the direction of the opposed butt, said opposed butt having a substantially straight arm extending angularly from the attaching plate portion thereof and being channel-shaped in cross sectional form, the free end portion of the arm of the second named butt nesting within the hook-shaped arm of the rst named butt when said butts are in closed position, and a pair of links hingedly coupling the arms of both butts, with one end of each link pivoted to the free end of the respective arms.
3. A hinge of the class described comprising two butts, each butt having attaching plate portions, a hollow hook-shaped arm projecting to one side of the attaching plate portion of one butt in the direction of the opposed butt, said opposed butt having a substantially straight arm extending angularly from the attaching plate portion thereof and being channel-shaped in cross sectional form, the free end portion of the arm of the second named butt nesting within the hook-shaped arm of the first named butt when said butts are in closed position, a pair of links hingedly coupling the arms of both butts, and one of said links being straight and extending between the free end of the hook-shaped arm and the central portion of said channelled arm to guide the free end of the hook-shaped arm through a true arc with respect to said channelled arm.
4. A hinge of the class described comprising two butts, each butt having attaching plate portions. a hollow hook-shaped arm projecting to one side of the attaching plate portion of one butt in the direction of the opposed butt, said opposed butt having a substantially straight arm extending angularly from the attaching plate portion thereof and being channel-shaped in cross sectional form, the free end portion of the arm of the second named butt nesting within the hook-shaped arm of the rst named butt when said butts are in closed position, a pair of links hingedly coupling the arms of both butts, one of said links being straight and extending between the free end of the hook-shaped arm and the central portion of said channelled arm to guide the free end of the hook-shaped arm through a true arc with respect to said channelled arm, the other of said links being hook-shaped in form and pivoted to the free end of the channelled arm and to the hookshaped arm inwardly of the free end thereof, and said hook-shaped link being adapted to seat within the hook-shaped arm when the hinge is in open position.
5. A hinge of the class described comprising two butts, each butt having attaching plate portions, a hollow hook-shaped arm projecting to one side of the attaching plate portion of one butt in the direction of the opposed butt, said opposed butt having a substantially straight arm extending angularly from the attaching plate portion thereof and being channel-shaped in cross sectional form, the free end portion of the arm of the second named butt nesting within the hookshaped arm of the first named butt when said butts are in closed position, a pair of links hingedly coupling the arms of both butts, one of said links being straight and extending between the free end of the hook-shaped arm and the central portion of said channelled arm to guidev the free end of the hook-shaped arm through a true arc with respect to said channelled arm, the other of said links being hook-shaped in form and pivoted to the free end of the channelled arm and to the hook-shaped arm inwardly of the free end thereof, said hook-shaped link being adapted to seat within the hook-shaped arm when the hinge is in open position, and said hook-shaped link being adapted to engage the straight link when the hinge is in closed position.

A concealed hinge attachable to the inner surfaces of a support and a swinging member, comprising butt parts having attaching plates secured to said inner surfaces, said plates and inner surfaces being respectively arranged, in the closed position of the hinge, in common alinement, said plates having angularly extending arms extending in the direction of the intersection between the support and swinging member and overlapping each other, the arm of the butt attached to said swinging member being hookshaped in form, and the overlapped portions of said arms being coupled together by a pair of links pivoted to each arm and disposed between adjacent overlapped surfaces of said arms.

A concealed hinge attachable to the inner surfaces of a support and a swinging member, comprising butt parts having attaching plates secured to said inner surfaces, said plates and inner surfaces being respectively arranged, in the closed position oi the hinge, in common alinement, said plates having angularly extending arms extending in the direction of the intersection between the support and swinging member and overlapping each other, the arm of the.- butt attached to said swinging member being hook-shaped in form, the overlapped portions of said arms being coupled together by a pair of links pivoted to each arm and disposed between adjacent overlapped surfaces of said arms, said arms being of channelled cross sectional form, and the side walls of the channels of said arms being in common alinement.
