IMPROVEMENTIN METHODS OF ATTACHING BUTTONS TO CARDS.

This invention relates to a new method of attaching buttons to cards as they are placed thereon at the factory to be sent out for sale.

The usual method of attaching buttons to cards for such purpose is to puncture the card,

pass the eyes of the buttons through the aperture, and run a thread through them and attach the same to some portion of the card; but this has proved to be an imperfect method, as when a portion of the buttons on any one card become detached from the others by cutting or tearing said card, the thread iscut or broken, and so a portion of the remaining buttons are liable to fall or be unintentionally removed from the same.

The object of this improvement is the providing of a remedy for the difficulty alluded to; and to this end my inventionconsists in the following-described method of attaching buttons to the cards upon which they are placed when sent out for sale, it consisting in indenting the card A, to whichthe buttons B are attached, suchifidntations being formed substantially as shown in Fig. 2 of the draw. ings. " This method of attaching the buttons will be found to be effectual, whether the projecting portior begiln netal or of clothfor'other elastic substance, tireonly difference between the two kinds being that the metal ones require to be fastened with a substance which, when dry will be harder than that with which the others are fastened, and thatthequantity of material used be greater in the former than in the latter case.

When it is desirable to fasten cloth'covered buttons, or buttons having elastic projections upon their inner surfaces, the indentations may be dispensed ith, and the adhesive matter may be applied to the plain surface of the card, as shown in Fig' 3', when, by placing the prdjec tion of thel lfiittoii therein, the at-v tachment will be made and the same purpose will be served as w hen" the indentations are made in the card.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- The herein-described method of securing buttons to the cards upon which they are placed when sent out to be sold, it consisting in placing upon the backs of such cards a quantity of glue or other adhesive substance, and placing the eyes of the buttons therein, the adhesive substance l eing placed in cavities formed in the card or upon the plain surface thereof, substantially as'fsEfo'rthf In testinimiy that fclaim the foregoing as
