Patented Aug.. 95 1932 unirse.. raiser ortica RAYOND E. NOYES, 0F KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI Application filed. March 25, 1931.v Serial No. 525,123.
This invention relates to combs and particularly hair combs having structure whereby treatment of the hair and scalp can be effected by the application of liquid while using the comb.
@ne of the primary objects of the instant invention is the provision of a comb having as a part thereof, nov-lfeatures including a cavity in the body of the comb, a plurality of glandsv extending from the ca f'ity to the points of discharge, spaced inwardly from t-he end of the gland-forming tooth, and appropriate feeding apparatus disposed within said cavity.
A yet further object of the invention is the provision of a novelly constructecL hair comb wherein is provided a plurality of glands extending from a. reservoir, formed by the comb body, and each having a lateral discharge portion positioned to empty a supply of liquid from a point between the teeth of y Specific structural details embodying the features of this invention, together with other objects and'mothod of forming such a comb will be made evident during the course of the following specification, referring to the accompanying drawing, w ierein Figure l is a broken, vertical, central section taken lon gitudinally, of a comb embodying features conteinplate-dfby the vpresent invention.
` Fig. 2 is an enlarged, vertical, cross section through the saine taken along line II-Il of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged, fragmentary, sectional view talen through the filler tube and plug atone end of the comb.
Fia'. l is a vertical section taken throughk the 'filler tube at the end of the comb on line IV-T 'T of Fig. 8, and,
Fig. 5 is a fragmentary, vertical, central, longitudinal, section through a portion of a comb constructed in accordance with a modified form of the invention.
Like reference characters designate similar parts 'throughout thefseveral views and the numeral 8 indicates a coin-b body having a plurality of teeth 10 extending therefrom in the usual manner. A longitudinal cavity 12, formed in body 8, receives a collapsible reservoir le which may be made of rubber or similar material having the desired property and characteristics.
This reservoir 14 may be filled with liquid of any hind which is desiredto be applied to the hair or scalp during the use of the comb.y The applica tion action might be caused through the use of apparatus shown, which preferably consists of a plate 16, coentensive with reservoir 14 and resting against the side wall thereof.
Reservoir la might be molded of rubber or similar substance which allows collapsing when pressure is exerted Aupon plate 16. When such pressure is exerted, liquid contained within reservoir 1li is forced therefrom through all of glands 18 which are formed in a predetermined number of the teeth of the comb. Teeth 2O forming glands 18 are slightly larger than teeth 10 and each gland 18 terminates in a lateral discharge portion 22, spaced inwardly from the end of tooth 20. As indicated in Fig. 1, this construction allows the discharge of liquid at a point between the respective tooth 20 and the tooth 10 neXt adjoining. This feature is one of the salient points of invention and is likewise shown in the modified form. rEhe reason for positioning the discharge end of each gland 184 at such a point is obvious. There is no likelihood of clogging and the liquid being discharged is actually drawn or wiped along the side of hair passing between the teeth.
leaking.
Suitable manually operable means for conveniently depressing reservoir 14 is provided in the forni of the pivotally connected arm 2G, supportedby plate 16 between upstanding'lugs 28. A. pin 8O maintains arm and plate in 32 might be end of arm 26.
Cri
assembled relation and a head pivotally attached at the free A depression Se receives cavity V12 might be provided in the form ofr a liller tube 36, doubly flanged as at 38 to engage the end of reservoir 14 and passing Y tor a point without cavity 12 where it is closed bya cap 4() which may be removably aflizzedr through the intermediacy of screwA threads or the like. Y
As indicated in Figs. 1, 3 and 4, filler tube 36 passes through plug 42 and serves the purpose rof connecting plug and reservoir, whereby the two may be removed romthe comb without disassembling. Plug 42 is screwed into anV opening formed through the end of vbody 8 and sockets 44 may be formed in kplug 42 to receive a spanner wrench when removing or placing the plug. The opening which plug 42 enters. isy large enough to receive reservoir 14 and plate 16 and it is through this openingthat such parts are moved to the operative position.
In the inodilied form illustrated in Fig. 5; the comb itself is substantially the same as that previously7 described. he body 8 has teeth 10 and a cavity 12. Reservoir 14 and its actuating plate 16 are the same as before described. In this instance, however, glands are positioned between teeth 10, at the base thereof, and bushings 52 set up connection between the reservoir 14 and glands 50 so that liquid passing through the glands will not escape between the outer face of reservoir 14 and the cavity walls.
It is understood that materials of various types and characters might be used vto form a comb embodying the features of this in vention and that many modifications in the specific structure mightbe made without departing fromthe spirit thereof or the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new and desiredto be secured by Letters Patent is':
' 1. A comb comprising a body; a plurality of teeth integral therewith; a cavity formed within the body; a gland formed in each of anumber of said teeth; and means for manually forcing a rpredetermined amount of liquid from the cavity through all of the glands 2. A comb comprising a body; a pluralityY of teeth integral therewith; a cavity formed rWithin the body; a gland formed in yeach of a number oll said teeth; and means for manually forcing a liquid from the cavity through all of the glands; said glands and cavity being in communication adjacent ythe base of said teeth, each gland terminating in a lateral discharge portion spaced inwardly from the end 'of the tooth forming the same.
3. A comb,y comprising a body; a plurality of teeth integral therewith; a cavity lformed ywithin the body; and a gland formed in each of a number of said teeth, vsaid gland terminating in a lateral discharge portion directed toward the next adjoiningtooth. y
4. A comb comprising a body; a plurality of teeth integral therewith; a cavity formed within the body; a gland formed in each of a number of said teeth, said gland terminating in a lateral discharge portion directed toward the next adjoining tooth; and means for forcing a liquid from the cavity through all of said glands simultaneously.
5.- A comb comprising a body; a plurality of teeth integral therewith; a cavity formed within the body; a plurality of glands in communication with the cavity at their one end and terminating betweenV the said teeth at their opposite end; and means for fore#V ing a liquid from the cavity through all of said glands including a collapsible reservoir within the cavity and a bushing connecting each'gland respectively and said reservoir.
6. A comb comprising a body; a pluralityy of teeth integral therewith; a cavity formedr within the body; a plurality of glands in communication with the vcavity at their one end and terminating to project liquid between cer- Y tain teeth at their opposite end; and meansr ed by the plate movableto and from a posi- Y tion projecting lbeyond the edge of surface of said body. f
7 In a hair-treating comb, a body having a cavity formed therein; a collapsible reservoir within said cavity; an assembly opening through the body wall for the placing of said reservoir; and a plug removably' secured Vinsaid opening having a filler tube for the reservoir passing therethrough.
8. In a hair-treating comb, a body having a cavity formed therein; a collapsible reservoir and a plate within said cavity; anY assembly opening throughrthe body wall for the placing of said reservoir and plate; a plug removably secured in said opening; and a filler tube for the reservoir passing through said plug and Vsecuring said reservoir and plug in assembled relation.
