G. E. STOCKSETH BRUSH FEEDING DEVICE Filed Sept. 24. 1923 V k f 7 Q x; M :l

nnusn-rnanme nnvrcn.
Application filed September of the city of Chicago, in the county of Cook andState of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Brush- Feeding Device; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same,' reference being had.
to the accompanying drawings, and to the numerals .of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates more particularly to an improved type of combination brush having an interior feed mechanism in the brush handle adapted to supply the brush bristles or hair with a paste from a replaceable filler tube forming apart of the brush handle.
It is an object of this invention to provide a brush, the handle of which includes a paste carrying refiller tube. i
It is also an object of the invention to provide a material feed mechanism in the handle of a shaving brush or tooth brush, said feed mechanism being adapted for use in connection with a replaceable filler tube contain-.
1; ing a paste or other material to be fed to the brush bristles or hairs.
It is a further object of the invention to provide a brush wherein a material carrying tube'is adapted to be readily connected for use with a handle feed mechanism which is ada ted to be manually operated to cause material from the tube to be delivered between the brush bristles in .predetermined quantities.
It is an important object of this invention to provide a brush of simple and improved construction wherein a material carrying replaceable filler tube is adapted to form part 'of the handlc'and is associated with a plugging and feeding mechanism which when manually operated is first adapted to open up the feed outlet apertures and then feed material from the tube to the brush bristles.
Other and further important objects of this invention will be ap arent from the disclosures in the specification and accompanying drawings.
This invention (in a preferred form) is illustrated in the drawings and hereinafter more fully described. On the drawings: Figure 1 is a longitudinal section of a shaving brush embracing the principles of this invention, showing 24, 1928. Serial no. 664,350.
. parts in elevation and the operation in dotted lines.
Figure 2 is a transverse section taken on line 2-2 of Figure 1.
As shown on the drawings: Referring to Figures 1 and 2, the reference numeral 1 indicates a head or shank made of hard rubber or other suitable material and having one end reduced in diameter and externally threaded as at'2. The head 1 is provided with a tapering recess 3 which communicates with an outlet passage i ldcated centrally in the end of said head 1. The head 1 is recessed at 5 and has secured therein a plurality of rubber set brush hairs or bristles 6.
Projecting through the outlet passage 4 to close the same is one end of a plunger rod or feed rod 7 which normally closes the opening 4. The plunger'7 is formed on one end of an enlarged feed screw 8 having shoulders 9 and 10 respectively at the ends thereof. Formed on the other end of the screw 8 is a stem 11 which projects through a top piece or cap 12 made of hard rubber or other suitable material. The stem 11 has a knurled button or knob 13 secured on the outer end thereof for actuating the screw 8 and the plunger 7. The cap 12 is formed with an externally threaded portion 14. of reduced diameter and is recessed at 15.
A piston 16 has threaded engagement with the feed screw 8. Secured to the piston 16 by screws 17 is a washer 18. The piston 16 and Washer 18 are each provided with a cord or flat edge 19.
A shaving paste refiller tube 20 made of glass, celluloid or other transparent material is provided for use with the feed mechanisms. threaded at each end and is formed with a straight guide wall 21 adjacent the straight edges of the piston 16 and washer 18 to hold the piston against rotation and thereby permit longitudinal feeding of the same when the feed screw 8 is rotated by turning the knurled button 13. i
The tube 20 contains paste in the form of a cylinder extendin to the threaded portions of said tube. 6ne end of the tube 20 is threaded onto the threaded portion 2 of the head 1. The screw .8 is then inserted through the paste in the tube with the piston 16 seated against the outer end of the cylinder of paste. The retaining cap 12 is then threaded into the second end of the tube 20, thereby holding the tube in place to The refiller tube 20 is internally Ill til
form a part of the handle of the shaving brush.
Normally the plunger rod 7' rejects through the outlet passage t to c ose the same against the escape of the paste when the shaving brush is not in use. To 0 en the passage 4, the knurled button 13 is rst rotated in one direction until the shoulder 10 of the screw 8 contacts the inner surface of the end wall of the cap 12 as indicated in dotted lines in Figure 1, which withdraws the plunger 7 and opens passage 4. By now rotating button 13 in the reverse direction, and at the same time retaining the same against longitudinal movement, the piston 16, which cannot rotate, due to its fiat edge 16, will be advanced in the tube, thereby forcing a quantity of the paste into the recess 3 and out through the passage 4 between the hairs or bristles 6 of the brush. When it is desired to check the feed of aste further free rotation of button 13 wi 1 cause it to move to the left, its resistance to such movement being less than that of piston 16, thus causing stem 7 to re-enter and close passage 4, and at the same time forcing the contents of said passage 4 into the brush bristles. It will thus be seen that a predetermined quantity of paste may be fed to the brush hairs with each advance of the plunger plate 16.
When the paste in the tube has been used up the tube 20 is removed and a full tube inserted in its place. i
I am aware that numerous details of construction' may be varied through a wide range without departing from the principles of this invention, and I therefore do not purpose limiting the patent granted other wise than necessitated by the prior art.
I claim as my invention:
An ejector for brushes and the like, comprising a head, a material-carrying tube secured to said head and forming a handle therefor, a rotatable screw rod within said tube, a piston on said rod adapted to be shifted longitudinally in said tube by the rotation of'said rod, and a valve forming a continuation of said screw rod and adapted to open and close a discharge passage in said head, a rotation of said screw rod in one direction initially unseating said valve and then moving said piston forward to feed the material through said discharge passage, its reverse rotation closing said valve.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
GEORGE E. STOCKSETH.
