SHAVING BRUSH Feb. 7, 1933.
Filed June 14, 1932 56077 W J/ULvfOLLEI/V Patented Feb. 7, 1933 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE SCOTT W. MULHOLLEN, OF IBELLWOOD', PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-THIRD TO EMORY L. GEOFF, OF WASHINGTON, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA SHAVING BRUSH Application filed June 14,
This invention relates to shaving brushes, and more particularly an improvement in brushes of the fountain or magazine type which are adapted to dispense, at the will of the user, a quantity of soap to the bristles of the brush.
Devices of this general type are of course well known, but many of them are open to the objection that involve the use of dispensing valves and a spring pressed follower for the contents of the soap chamber which not only add to the cost of manufacture, but frequently prove unsatisfactory in use.
Accordingly, a primary object of the invention is to provide a'simple and practical construction effecting a minimum of economy in expense of manufacture as well as amaximum of convenience to the user. In that connection the invention contemplates a detachable handle, which may be conveniently placed in receiving relation to any of the standard tubes of shaving cream now on the market to receive discharge therefrom so that the contents of the tube may be placed within the handle, and, when the handle is fitted to the body of the brush, the device is ready for use as long as the soap supply lasts. The simplicity in filling and the convenience in having the soap ready for immediate use when the brush is ready for use will be readily appreciated.
Another object of the invention is to provide a plunger or follower which is actuated by finger pressure instead of a spring thereby giving the user complete control of the increment of soap discharged at each use.
A further object of the invention is to provide a soft flexible discharge tube which extends in close proximity to the tip of the bristles thereby dispensing the increment of soap at the proper point of the brush and avoiding clogging or hardening of thesoap adjacent the body of the brush.
With the above and the other objects in view which will more readily appear as the nature of the invention is more readily understood, the same consists in the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter more fully described, illustrated, and claimed.
1932. Serial No. 617,219.
Figure 3 is a top plan view of the brush shown in Figure 1.
Figure 4c is a detail view of a modified end of the soap dispensing tube.
Similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout several figures of the drawing.
According to the embodiment of the invention shown in Figure 1, the same consists of a brush body designated generally as-A, having associated therewith in any conventional manner the bristles constituting the brush B. To the end of the body A o posite the brush B there is a detachably tted hollow or chambered handle C.
One of the distinctive features of the invention resides providing the handle C with the soap receiving chamber or magazine 1 provided at one end with enclosed wall 2 having an opening 3 adapted to receive the boss or nipple portion 4 of the body A which serves to connect the handle with the body when the device is assembled in the manner shown in Figure 1. The opening 3 and the boss 4 may be provided with mating threads as shown or with equivalent inter-engaging connecting elements sufficient to hold the parts together when assembled.
In connection with the distinctive features above pointed out, namely that of providing the detachable handle with the closed end wall 2 and an opening 3, it may be pointed out that this arrangement provides for conveniently placing the discharge nipple portion a: of a soap or paste tube 3 therein so that the user by squeezing the usual compressible tube g can discharge the contents of the tube into the chamber or magazine 1 of the handle. lVhen this operation is started it will, of course, be understood that the plunger 5 is at the lower end of the chamber 1. that is adjacent the wall 2 as shown in Figure 2. As the soap is squeezed from the said boss, t
tube through the opening 3, the plunger 5 will be pushed toward the opposite end of the chamber 1 by the incoming charge of soap so that when the magazine 1 has been filled to its capacity the plunger 5 will be moved adjacent to the stop or abutment 6 which may be of any convenient type as for example, spring ring fitting into a groove in the end of the chamber.
When the chamber 1 of the handle is filled and the latter is fitted to the nipple 4 on the body, the device is ready for use by merely taking. the thumb or finger and pressing on the cupped side 5a of the plunger. As shown, the plunger 5 may have its side wall fitted with a felt or equivalent washer 5b which, it has been found in practice, prevents soap passing the sides of the plunger.
The nipple portion 4 of the body communicates with the flexible soap discharge tube 7 which extends downward through the bristles asindicated at 8. The discharge tube 7 is preferably made of a soft grade of rubber, and if desired. the lower extremity thereof may be cut or kerfed as indicated at 8a in Figure 4 so that the end of the tube will conform as closely as possible to the bristles so far as the feeling to the face is concerned, while at the same time having the advantage of lacing the soap where it is most needed and where it would be placed ordinarily by the user in beginning to shave.
Any convenient and practical way may be utilized to mount the tube in the body B. By way of example, however, the tube 7 is shown as being carried by the detachable wall 4a of the body, the same being fitted to a relatively small nipple 4b communicating with the nipple 4. The Wall 4a may be threaded into the body and anchored to it by the fastening 40 or its equivalent.
From the foregoing it will be apparent that the distinctive features of the invention reside in providing a detachable handle C which may be removed for the purpose of receiving a charge of soap and then readily refitted to the brush body so that when finger pressureis applied to the plunger 5, soap may be discharged at the tip of the brush.
Without further description it is thought that the features and advantages of the invention will be clearly understood, and it will of course be clear that chan es may be resorted to within the scope o the appended claims without departing from the spirit of the invention.
I claim 1. A soap dispensing shaving brush including a body-provided with aboss at the side thereof opposite the bristle portion, a hollow handle open at one end, a floating plunger accessible from said open end of the handle, an end wall on the handle having an opening adaplted to detachably interlock with c said handle when detached being adapted to have said opening placed in communication with a collapsible soap tube whose contents may be squeezed into the handle to float the plunger back toward the open end of the handle.
2. A dispensing brush including a body having a bristle portion, a handle providing a paste magazine open at one end and closed at its other end except for a relatively small opening which detachably connects with the body, a floating plunger exposed at one side to the atmosphere and also to finger pressure to extrude the contents of the magazine through the said small opening, said handle when removed from the body being adapted to be placed in communication through said small opening with a collapsible paste container whereby the contents of the latter may be squeezed into the handle to move the plunger toward the open end thereof.
In testimony whereof, I herein affix my signature.
SCOTT W. MULHOLLEN.
