This invention relates to means for operat ing the fountaln rolls of prlnting presses, and
particularly to means whereby the feeding ing frame is oscillated in unison with the movements of the printing cylinder. A threaded adjusting bar is journaled in the rocking frame and projects laterally from the pivotal axis of the latter frame. A traveling nut is threaded on to the bar and a link connects this nut with the driving member of an intermittent grip device which is mounted on the fountain roll shaft. By turning the threaded bar, the nut may be adjusted toward or from the pivoted end of the rocking frame, while the press is in motion, to shorten or lengthen the throw of the link and the movement of the driving member of the illtermittent grip device. The latter device is of the type in which the parts frictionally engage one another, and hence, any forward movement of the driving member, however slight, will cause a corresponding movement of the driven member.

Referring to the drawing, 1 indicates one of the end frames of that portion of a printing press wh ch supports the inking mechanism, and 2 indicates the printing cylinder. The ink fountain is indicated at 3, and the fountain roll at 4. The usual ink distributing rolls, not shown, are arranged between the ductor roll 5 and the printing cylinder. These bars extend out this rocking frame is oscillated about the "byan eccentric strap 9, from which projects an arm 10, which ispivotally connected at 11 to the free end of the guide frame 6. The guide frame extends laterally from its piv-,- otal point and has a longitudinal slot or guideway 12, in which is arranged a traveling nut 13, which is mounted upon a threaded adjusting bar 14, the latter extending longitudinally through the slot 'or guideway 12' and being suitably journaled in the ends of the guide frame. The bar 14 is provided at its outer end with a hand crank 15, by which the bar may be turned to adjust the traveling nut to different positions in the guideway. A; link 16 is pivotally connected at one end to the nut 13, and at its opposite end to a bolt 17, on the driving member a of a friction intermittent grip device, this member being journaled upon the sleeve 18 of a driven member 5. said sleeve being secured to the shaft 19 of the fountain roll. The member a comprises a disk having an annular flange 20, which surrounds several dogs 21, which are pivoted to the sleeve 18 and engage the inner surface of the flange 20. These dogs are in the form of short bars, arranged within an annular guide'groove 22 in the sleeve and mounted upon pins 23, which extend through the walls wardlv in a direction which is nearly although not, quite radial to the axis of the shaft 19', and the ends of the bars are kept in constant contact with the inner surface of the flange 2O bv springs 24, attached to the free ends of the bars and to pins 25 which project from the sleeve 18.
It will be evident that as the printing cylinder 2 revolves, the eccentric 8 and arm 10 will cause the guide frame 6 to rock back and: forth about the pivot 7, and that if the adjusting nut 18 is set close to the axis of the frame, the driving member a will be given little or no movement. By turning the crank 15. the traveling nut can be set at the forwardend of the frame and the driving member will be given its maximum oscillation. The upward movement of the link 16 Will cause the driving member of the intermittentgrip qdevice toslip past the dogsv 21, and on the downward movement of the link the dogs will bind against the inner surface of the driving member and the driven member and fountain roll will be turned to. a degree which depends upon the adjustment of the'traveling nut in m the rocking guide. With the" mechanism described, adjustment of the feed movements 7 of the fountain roll may be made quickly and while the printing press is in operation and the range of adjustments is practically unlimited.
For: the purpose of illustration, I have shown the apparatus arranged to oscillate the rocking frame and move the fountain roll once during each revolution of the printing cylinder; but in some instances thisratio is changed by suitable gearing, so that the frame 1 ,will be causedto oscillate once during several revolutions of-the printing cylinder. 7 What I claim is: a 1.
