RECORD GUIDE Filed April 13, 1929 ENTOR M2? ATTORNEY Patented July 19, 1932 UNITED STATES ELMER W. DAVIS, OF NEWTON, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR, BY MESNE ASSIGNMENTS,
TO REMINGTON RAND INC., OF BUFFALO, NEW YORK, A CORPORATION OF DELA- WARE RECORD GUIDE Application filed April 13,
This invention relates to a record guide adapted to be interposed in a mass of records to indicate various subdivisions thereof and to aid and facilitate the filing of the records.
An object of this invention is the provision of a record guide which is simple in construction,-efiicient in use and cheap to manufacture.
Another object of this invention is to provide a record guide having means wherein an insert may be positioned, said means being disposed above the body of the record guide and records, whereby it is in full View. A further object of this invention is to provide a record guide constructed in such a manner that it will not cause the mass of records to assume a fan-shape, that is, wider at the top than at the bottom thereof.
A specific object of this invention is to provide a record guide having a body member, a tab extending therefrom and having a pocket formed therein and provided with means for retaining an insert disposed in said pocket.
Further objects will appear from the following description, appended claims and accompanying drawlng in which:
Figure-1 is a front elevation of the record guide constituting the invention.
Figure 2 is a rear view of the record guide.
Figure 3 is a section taken on lines'3-3 of Figure 2.
Referring now to the drawing wherein one modification of the invention is illustrated and like reference numerals designate like parts, the reference numeral 1 designates a body member of the guide having a tab 2 extending from the top is formed with a pocket 3 which is adapted to receive an insert 4 having any desired indicia thereon. To retain the insert 4 within the pocket 3, tongues or lug 5 are provided. In the drawing four tongues are illustrated. two positioned adjacent the top and two adjacent the bottom of the pocket. It is, of course, to be understood that any number of tongues may be used and they may be positioned wherever desired. The front face of the tongues may be so formed that they lie in the same plane as the front face of the thereof. The tab 2 192;). Serial No. 354,782.
guide. If desired, the tongues 5 may f'be' made so that they are resilient, whereby they may more effectively retain the insert 4 and prevent accidental displacement thereof.
i The rear face 6 of the pocket 3 lies in-a plane spaced fromand' substantially parallel to the rear face ofthe guide. In use, these guides are ofttimes inclined. In order to PATENT OFFICE i prevent the walls of the pocket, and especial ly the bottom wall 7, from engaging and'gripping any of the edges of adjacent records, they are rounded or inclined as clearly illustrated in Figure2. By this construction, engagement thereof with any of the adj acent records will cause said records to slide over tlewalls and gripping thereofwill be avoid e The record guides, as above stated, are adapted to be introduced between masses of record files. In order to eliminate any fanefl'ect, the bottom wall 7 of the pocket 3 is formed abovethe'top edge 8 of the guide. This permits the body member of the record and form a mass of uniform thickness.
The card insert 4 is positioned within the pocket by inserting the same beneath the tongues 5. If desired, a piece of celluloid 9 or other transparent ed over the insert, whereby the latter is protected.
The record guide above described may be made from any suitable material. I have guide to be in contact with the filed records I material may be insertfound that, if the record guide be made from Q thin sheet-metal, such as aluminum, the pocket 3 and its cooperating tongues 5 may be formed by a simple stamping-out process.
In the drawing the tab 2 is illustrated as being in the center of the guide. merely for purposes of illustration, since it is obvious that it may be formed at any position thereon.
I claim:
1. In combination with prising a piece of sheet material having a planar marginal portion, a central portion completely surrounded by said marginal portion offset therefrom and parallel thereto.
a guide, a tab com- This is I and providing a label receiving pocket, and A means extending from said marginal portion and in a plane therewith, over said central portion for retaining a label in said pocket.
2. As an article of manufacture, a guide comprising a rectangular body member of sheet material, an integral projection on one 7 edge thereof forming an index tab, said tab having a length substantially less than the length of the body member, a labelreceiving pocket in said tab formed out of the central portion thereof and offset fromfthe plane of the tab, the marginal portions of the tabsurrounding the pocket and lying in the same plane as the body member, and tongues integral with said tab, lying in the plane of the marginal portions thereof and extending over 7 said pocket for retaining a label in the pocket.
3. As an article of manufacture, a guide,
comprising a rectangular body member, of sheet material, an integral extension on one edge thereof forming an index tab, said tab having a length substantially less than the length of the body member and comprising a marginalouter frame portion substantially coplanar with the body member and an offset central portion surrounded by said frame portion and integrally joined on all sides to the frame portion to provide a label receiving-pocket, and means on said tab for retaining a label in the pocket.
I In testimony whereof, I have aflixed my signature to this specification. Y
ELMER W. DAVIS.
