GARMENT POCKET CONSTRUCTION Filed May 9. 1951 Inventor fl Home y Patented July 5, 1932 UNITED STATES BARNETT J. SMITH, or sANAN'roNIo, Taxi GARMENT rocxn'r' cons'raucrron 1 Application 'filed May 9, 1931. Serial No. 536,236. v r
This invention relates to an improved pocket construction adapted to be embodied in wearing apparel, and it has more particular reference to a supplemental external pocket 6 designed to accommodate accessories. v
More explicitly stated, the idea involves the provision of a pocket which is built into the waistband of the garment, for instance a trousers or a skirt, said pocket being longi- 1 tudinally elongated and formed with a closing flap, and capable of serving to accommodate, for instance, a commercial package of cigarettes.
In carrying the inventive conception into practice, I have evolved and produced a sim-' ple and economical garment pocket structure which maintains the package of cigarettes or the like in a convenient position for ready access, the same being disposed lengthwise with respect to the beltand adjacent ,portion of the garment to permit the cigarettes to be maintained in an intact position and to avoid breakage and crushing even when the wearer stoops or twists the body in running,
playing games, working, etc.
A further feature of the invention is predicated upon the external longitudinal location of the pocket wherein the same constitutes a reinforcing means for the body encircling band of the trousers, and wherein said pocket constitutes a guide and belt retaining loop permitting passage of the belt between the pocket and the body-encircling band of the garment.
A still further feature of the invention is found in the embodiment in thepocket structure of a supplemental receptacle which forms a sheath and container for a pencil or the like object, whereby to add further to the utility of the complete structure.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is an elevational view showing the pocket construction embodied in a pair of trousers.
Figure 2 is a horizontal or longitudinal sectional view through the structure.
Figure 3 is a transverse vertical section.
In the drawing in Figure 1, the trousers are designated by the numeral 4: and are formed with the usual waistband 5 carrying 1lOo(1 ps( 6'to accommodate'the buckle-equippedv Built into and on this waistband is the supplemental accessory pocket 8. This is formed from a patch of suitable texture of inaterial stitched around its marginal edges as indicated at 9 to provide the'desired proportions and' fullness and to define a receptacle between'itself and the adjacent portion of the waistband, as shown clearly in Figure 2.
It will be noted that the pocket has the right hand end wall 10 stitched down to the points llso as to define a slot 12% accommodate the'belt 7 Thus in a sense this pocket construction provides an additional loop through which the belt is slidable.
There is an extension or flap along the lower edge portion of the patch designated at- 13 in Figure 3, this being stitched at the points 14 and 15130 define an open-ended tubular receptacle to accommodate a pencil or the like 16. The numeral 17 designates a flap stitched to the waistband as at 18 by an inturned end portion and this provides a closure for the open end of the pocket. The flap is provided at its free end with a buttonhole 19 to engage over a button 20 on the front wall of the pocket. or
The stitched end 18 is also left loose for a B0 portion of its length to provide an additional guide slot to accommodate the adjacent portion of the belt 7.
The gist of the invention is the provision of an external suitably proportioned and 35 shaped pocket fastened to the waistband of a garment, such as a mans trousers, said pocket being sofastened in place as to permit the customary belt to pass through the opposite end portions thereof. A feature of the invention is in having the pocket disposed lengthwise with respect to the waistband of the trousers, and having the pocket open at one end to facilitate insertion of matches, cigarettes and other personal accessories.
A feature is also predicated upon the miniature or small pocket 13 designed to accommodate a pencil or writing instrument. Then too, the idea of providing a closing flap is believed to be an added feature.
The invention is adapted to be used in connection with various kinds of apparel, whether it be of feminine or male variety. The structure is quite simple, yet durable, and will serve the desired purposes and advantages in a highly satisfactory manner.
It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of the invention will be readily apparent.
It is to be understood that changes may be made in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts provided that such changes fall within the scope of the appended claim.
I claim:
In a structure of the class described, in combination, a garment including a Waistband,
and a pocket attached thereto, said pocket being adapted" to accommodatepersonal articles,
and accessories such as matches, cigarettes, pencils and the like, said pocket being of eX- ternal location and generally rectangular in configurationv and located lengthwise with respect to the waistband, and including a 7 separate closing flap, one end of the pocket and the attached end of the flap having a portion unattached tothewaistband to provide a slot to accommodate abelt, whereby to permit the pocket to have the additional function of a con-fining element for the belt.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
