Description

5, F, JOHNSON SLIDE FASTENER SOCKET MEMBER Filed March 26, 1951 Patented July 5, 1932 mitt ALFRED F. JOHNSON, F SOMEIRVILLE, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO UNITED-CARR FASTENER CORPORATION, OF CAMBRIDGE, MASSACHUSETTS, A CORPORATION OF MASSACHUSETTS SLIDE FASTENER SOCKET IVIEMBER Application filed March 26, 1931. Serial No. 525,379..
My invention aims to provide improvements in slide fastener socket members for attachment to straps and the like.
In the drawing which illustrates a preferred embodiment of my invention Figure 1 is a plan view of a fastener assembly including one form of my improved socket;
Fig. 2 is a section taken on the line 22 of Figure 1;
Fig. 3 is a plan View of the socket before attachment to a strap; and I Fig. 4 is a section taken on the line 4 & of Fig. 3.
The preferred embodiment of my invention illustrated by the drawing shows a simple, inexpensive, durable and eflicient onepiece fastener socket of the slide fastener type for use on a strap secured to wearing apparel.
One embodiment of a socket (Fig. 3) is formed from a single piece of sheet metal to provide a relatively thin plate which is provided with a pair of curved strap-receiving slots 11 located adjacent to opposite ends thereof. Between the slots 1-1 is provided a slightly depressed central bar portion 2 in which is formed a stud-receiving aperture 3.
The particular socket structure illustrated is for use with a rigid stud (not shown) and therefore the stud-receiving aperture 3 must be permitted to be enlarged. In the drawing I have shown the central bar 2 as being divided by slits 4L4c, which extend from the stud-receiving aperture in opposite directions, and terminating in enlargements 5-5. Between the central bar 2 and the strap-receiving slots 11 I have provided, in the plate, other slots 66 extending substantial- -10 ly parallel with the slots 11. The central bar portion 2 is, therefore, divided into two laterally yieldable portions located at opposite sides of the stud-receiving aperture so that when a stud is forced through the aperture it will expand and then contract again.
By providing the enlargement 55 I increase the flexibility of the central portion 2 because the distance between the ends of the slots 66 and the enlargement is less than the desired Width of the material between the enlargements and the stud-receiving aperture.
Thus, the central portion is made strong and durable while securing desirable flexibility of the portions at the sides of the aperture.
While I have illustrated and described a preferred embodiment of my invention, I do not wish to be limited thereby, because the scope of my invention is best described b the following claims.
I claim:
1. A slide fastener socket comprising a plate having strap-receiving slots disposed transversely thereof and located at opposite ends, centrally located laterally yieldable stud-engaging means providing a stud-receiving aperture and made yieldable by slits extending from the stud-receiving aperture toward the outeredges of said plate and said plate having other slots located between the stud-engaging means, and the strap-receiving slots to cooperate with said slits thereby to permit lateral expansion of said stud-engaging means and enlargement of the studreceiving aperture when the socket is being engaged with or disengaged from a cooperating fastener stud without interference from a1 strap passing through the strap receiving s ots.
V 2. A slide fastener socket comprising a plate having strap-receiving slots disposed transversely thereof and located at opposite ends, a central crossbar member substantially parallel to said slots and having a stud-receiving aperture therethrough, said central crossbar member having longitudinal slits extending from the stud-receiving aperture toward the outer edges of said plate and said plate having other slots located between the crossbar and the strap-receiving slots to cooperate with said slits thereby to permit lateral expansion of said crossbar and enlarge ment of the stud-receiving aperture when being engaged with or disengaged from a cooperating fastener stud and said slits being enlarged at their outer ends to reduce the Width of the material between the outer ends of the slits and the outer ends of the said other slots thereby to increase the resiliency of said crossbar member. V
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification.
ALFRED F. JOHNSON.
