The invention relates to new and useful improvements in jar closures, and more particularly to a jar closure which includes a cap and retaining band. V I

An object of the invention is to provide a retaining band the ends of which are connected so that the band may be easily opened,

in which the connection for the ends of the band is so constructed that when once connectedand the closure sealed to the jar, it

cannot be readily separated without destroying the connection.

The invention is directed to a jar closure of the type wherein the cap is secured to a jar by a retaining band. The retaining band is formed from a strip, the upper edge por-- tion of which is turned at an angle so asto overlie the cap and the under edge of the band is turned beneath a shoulder on the jar for securing the cap in sealed contact with the lip of the jar. The invention is directed par 5 ticularly to the means for j oining'the ends of a bandof this type. It has been a common expedient to provide one end of a band with;

a projecting lapped tongue which has a slot therethrough and'the other end of a band said slot and is adapted to be folded down to hold the ends of the-band together. It is very easy to lift the tongue lug so as to separate the ends and remove the cap from thejariand then apply the cap and bend the tongue and lug back into their initial position, thus reclosing the jar.

the inventionas'illustrated is shown as applied to a jar 1. The closureincludesa cap 2 and a-band 3. The band has the upper edge portionthereof bent inwardlyat an angle as indicated at 4. This inwardly-1 projecting portion of the band overlies the cap 2 as clearly shown in Fig. 1. The ends of the band are joined and after the cap is placed on the 7 jar the band is applied and the lower edge portion is turned underneath the ledge on the jar as indicated at 5. The end 6 of the band is provided with a projecting releasing tongue 7. At the base of the tongue 7 is a slot 8 which is completely within the band and this slot is considerably wider thanthe thickness of the metal forming the. band.
