I 1,4739% w. HUGHES MILK BOTTLE OPENER Filed July 5, 1922 William 1 115972425,
Patented Nov. 13, 1923.
sr'rs MILK-BOTTLE OPENER.
Application filed July 3,
To all whom it may con-cm:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM HUGHES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Alameda, in the county of Alameda and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Milk-Bottle Openers, of which the following is a specification. My invention is an improved milk bottle opener which may be readily applied to the paper cap of milk bottle and easily manip ulated to disengage the cap from the mouth of the bottle.
Referring to the annexed drawing in which my invention is illustrated and which forms a part of this specification:
F'gure -1 is a side View of one form of my milk bottle opener.
Figure 2 is a plan View of said bottle opener.
Figure 3 is a side View of another form of my bottle opener. v
Figure at is a side view of the form of my bottle opener shown in Figure 3 in the act of disengaging the cap from the mouth of the bottle.
My bottle opener shown in Figures 1 and 2 comprises a base 1, a ring-shaped handle 2, a pair of prongs 3 and 1, and a thumb The device may be made of a member single strip of sheet metal bent at the ends of the base 1 inwardly upon said base forming connecting members 6 and 7, then from the inner ends of said connecting members into arcuate members 8 and 9 and then outwardly from the end of member 9 into the thumb member 5. The thumb member 5 is located at the top of the handle 2 at the left of the center thereof. The ends of the mem bers 8 and 9 may be secured together by a a0 rivet 10. The prong 3 is struck out of the base 1 while the prong i is struck out of the connecting member 7. The prong 3 extends straight down from the left end of the base 1 while the prong a extends downwardly and as outwardly at an angle from the right end of said base.
In operation the pron 4 is first inserted through the bottle cap, t on the prong 3 is 1922. Serial No. 572,467.
inserted through the cap and the handle 2 being gripped by the hand, the member 5 is engaged by the thumb and pressed forward- .ly to the left so that the prong 1 lifts one side of the cap upwardly, whereupon the cap is easily withdrawn from the mouth of the bottle.
My invention as illustrated in Figures 3 and 4: may be cast and comprises a base 12, a ring handle 13 secured to a standard 1% upstanding from said base, a prong 15 and a thmnb member 16. The prong 15 projects downwardly from the center of the base 1 and to the right. The thumb member 16 is located at the top of the handle 13 and to the left of the center thereof.
In operation the prong 15 is inserted through the center of the cap and the handle 13 being gripped by the hand the thumb engages the member 16 and presses the device toward the left lifting the right side of the cap upwardly, whereupon the cap may be readily withdrawn from the mouth of the bottle.
Having described my invention, I claim:
1. A bottle opener comprising a base, a ring handle connected to said base, a prong projecting downwardly and outwardly from one end of sait base. a prong projecting straight down from the other end of said base. and a thumb member on the top of said handle.
2. A bottle opener formed of a single sheet of metal bent to form a rectangular flat base, connecting members extending from said base and a pair of arcuate members extending from said connecting members, the upper ends of said arcuate members being co1mected, one of said arcuate members extending beyond the said connection and extending upwardly therefrom to form a. thumb mem her. a pron extending downwardly and outwardly from one end of the base and a prong on. the other end of the base extending perpendicular thereto.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
-WILLIAM HUGHES.
