UNITED STATEs PATENT OFFICE. v
EDWIN T. MARSH, OF ROCHESTER, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN LETTER-BOXES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 186,429, dated January 23, 1877;
May 25, 1876.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, EDWIN T. MARSH, of Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented certain new and usefulImprovements in Letter-Boxes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the'accompanying drawing, andto the letters of reference marked part of this specificabeing hung in the box with about half of its surface exposed, and of the construction of the door, opened in taking out the mail, substantially as hereinafter more fully set forth.
In the annexed drawing, A refers to a box or depository for letters or mail, within which is hung, with about halfits circumference exposed, a cylinder or part of a cylinder, B, having a chamber, 12, to receive the mail, which it deposits in the box when rotated, as hereinafter described. This cylinder or part of a' cylinder is eccentrically connected by a plate or bar, 0, or other suitable means, to the cover U of the box, by which, when the said cover is grasped and elevated sufliciently to revolve the cylinderuntil its chamber bis presented 4, to view to receive the mail, the said cylinder will be rotated in contact with the front edge application filed part of a cylinder, B, may be secured in its bearings in the box A as shown at c f, Figs. 4 and 5.
To enable the mail to be removed from the box a portion, 9, of the front of the box, and a portion, g, of its bottom, forming a section of the box, is cut from the latter and hinged thereto, as at h, constituting a door for the above-mentioned purpose. ,The portions 9 g of thedoor may be provided with sides g g,
to constitute the door a receptacle to receive the letters or mail from the box for their convenient transferrence to the bag of the carrier.
To limit the distance to which the door g g is opened, it is connected to the box A by jointed rods 73 t", or other suitable mechanism.
Having thus described my invention, what T claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, lS y 1. The chambered cylinder or part of a cylinder, B, eccentrically connected to the cover 0 by the rod 0, and hung in the box A, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The box A, having the door g g formed partly of the bottom, and partly ot'the front portion thereof, tially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that l claim the foregoing as my own I hereunto affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
