IMPROVEMENT IN LETTER-BOXES.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a front view of my improved letter-box; Fig. 2 is'a vertical section running from front to rear. Fig. 3 is a side view of my improved letter-box, the drawer being open ready to receive letters.

My invention consists of a letter-box provided with a novel construction of drawer,- having a hinged cover and bottom, both of which open and close automatically in opening and closing the drawer in the usual manner.

My letter-box is chiefly designed for street use, and may be made ofany desired size.

The receptacle of my improved letter-box is .Shown at A of the accompanying drawing. It is provided with a door, L, which is to be kept locked, except when it is opened to take out the mail, in the usual manner. On the top of this receptacle is a cast-iron box, B, provided with a drawer, O, which may be drawn out to receive letters or packages, as shown in Fig. 3. This drawer moves on a friction-roller, D, Fig. 2, so as to work with ease. As the drawer is pulled out the projection G upon the cover E strikes the projection H, Fig. 2, and thus the cover E is tilted up, as seen in Fig. 3; but this cover falls or closes the moment you begin to push the drawer shut. As the drawer is closed the bottom F drops, or is tilted down, as seen in Fig.

When the drawer is again closed, the cover E falls by its own weight, and is held down by the top of the box B.

It may be observed that the drawerG opens wide enough to receive any reasonable package, or fifty letters at a time, if desired, and yet the passage through the mailer or drawer is always closed either above or below the drawer, so that a person can see no openmg.
