Patented June 21, 1932 UNITE-D STATES MILDRED JEWELL, F MIAMI, FLORIDA EDUCATIONAL DEVICE' Application mea August 10,"19/31. serial No. 556,276.
This invention relates to an educational device designed more especially for use in primary schools wherein it is the practice to keep pupils busy with seat-work during certain periods of the day.
One of the objects is to provide a simple, compact and inexpensive form of equipment which, when finished by the completion of certain lessons, can be operated by the pupil.
Thus interest of the child in the work is maintained and, at the same time the device will prove of considerable educational value.
Another Objectis to provide an article which is motivated because the constructive work is not completed and ready tofunction until all of the assigned lessons have been finished.
With the foregoing and other objects in View which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combina-tion and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed may be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings the preferred form of the invention has been shown.
In said drawings Figure 1 is a plan view of the device, certain of the slides being partly or entirely withdrawn.
Figure 2 is a section on line 2 2, Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a section on line 3 3, Figure 1.
Figure 4 is a section on line 4 4, Figure 3.
Referring to the figures by characters of reference, 1 designates a box which can be of any desired material and a cover 2 is fitted thereon. The sides of the box and cover are formed with matching transverse slots 3 for the reception of the end portions of rolls 4 which have projecting knobs 5 or the like.
In one side of the box and cover are formed registering longitudinal slots 6 which open into a slot 7 formed in one side of an inverted box-like housing 8 seated between the box 1 and its cover 2. The flat closed top of this housing closes a large opening 9 formed in cover 2 and provides a guide and platen for a long web 10 of paper or the like which extends completely across the opening 9 and is connected at its ends tothe two rolls'. This web is adapted to be unwound from. one roll onto the other by manipulating the knobs. and that portion ofthe webadapted to be exposed through opening 9 is provided with aseries or large pictures each lof which constitutes the background for s one lesson. One of these pictures has beenindicated at 11. Directions tobe followed in completing every lesson can be printed or otherwise displayed on'the web adjacent to the respective pictures as at 12.
The housing constitutes a guide for a series of panels 13 and 14 formed of paper board or other desired material'. The inner ends of the panels are formed with wings 15 which come against vthe wall of housing 8 when the ing such movement, as. shownin Figure 4.
Panel 13 forms a backing for pages 16 of illustrations which are bound thereto. Each page is devoted to one lesson and contains panels are pulled Voutwardly, thereby limitpictures to be cutout and glued ontothe foundation illustration 11 of that particular lesson. For example, if the foundation picture shows a portion of a room, the pictures to be cut out will represent various furnishingsforthe room. Theseare to be placed in the most desirable positions on the foundation illustration in order to complete the lesson.
Panels 14 contain duplicates of the various pictures appearing on thepages 16 and the names of the various objects illustrated are displayed adjacent thereto. These illustrated panels 14 form a general dictionary or reference for all of the lessons, but there need not be a separate panel for each lesson.
The present device can be prepared to illustrate the several episodes Aof a story, historical event, etc., and when each lesson is completed the entire web can be unrolled to successively unfold the completed lessons and portray the illustrated episodes or the like.
The device is especially desirable not only because of its value in keeping the pupil busy by engaging him in constructive work, but also because of its educational value in impressing on the mind the important matters portrayed by the illustrations. A further feature of value is the maintenance of interest by the pupil in his desire to complete the series of lessons and thereby produce a iinished strip of pictures which can be displayed at will.
Other educational features can be combined with the device. For example, a color chart 17 and a number chart 18 have been sh-own on the exposed face of the cover 2.
What is claimed is: i
1. An educational device including a box, a movable cover therefor having an opening,
a web within the structure and having a y series of background illustrations adapted to be displayed successively throughthe opening, means for moving the web, a panel movable into and out of one side of the box, separate pages on the panel devoted to the respective illustrations on the web, each page containing cut-out pictures to be applied to the illustration associated therewith, there being a slot in the box in which the panel is slidable, and means on the panel cooperating with the end walls of the slot for limiting the outward movement of the panel relative to the box.
2. A device of the character described including a box having an open face, a web in the box having a series of foundation pictures thereon, means for moving the web in the box to expose the pictures successively through the opening, a panel movable into and out of a space in the box and under the web, there being a slot in one side of the box 1n which the panel is slidable, cooperating means on the box and' panel for limiting its movement outwardly from the box, and separate pages on the panel containing pictures to be cut out and applied lto the respective foundation pictures when exposed through the open face of the box.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto aiiixed my signature. MILDRED JEVVELL.
