% TTORNEY Patented May 31, 1932 STATES UN-ETE- MATTEO DE GESABE, OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY ROLLING EYE SET non DOLLS Application filed. April 2,
This invention relates to a rolling eye set for dolls, and means for mounting the same within the dolls head.
An object of this invention is to provide an eye set of the character described having improved means, including a toggle mechanism for firmly mounting the same within a dolls head and yet permitting rolling of the eyes and self adjustment thereof to fit the eye to sockets.
- A further object of this invention is to provide a structure of the character described which shall be adjustable with respect to the space between the eyes and wherein the eye 35 balls may readily be replaced, for example, for difl'erent sized eye balls;
A still further object of this invention is to provide a neat, compact and strong dolls eye structure, of the character described which shall be comparatively inexpensive to manufacture, easy to assemble and mount within the dollshead and practical and efficient toa high de ree.
ther objects or this invention will in part be obvious and in part hereinafter pointed out.
The invention accordingly consists in the features of construction, combinations of elements, and arrangement of'parts which will be exemplified in the construction hereinafter described, and of'which the scope of application will be indicated in the following claims.
In the accompanying drawings, in which is shown one ofthevarious possible illustrative embodiments of this invention,
Fig. 1 is an elevational, cross-sectional view of a doll provided with an eyeset embodying the invention, taken through one of the eye sockets; 1
Fig. 2 is a cross-sectional view taken on line 22 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3' is a front elevational view of the means for mounting an eye set within the dolls head;

ing the invention and illustrating a modified construction thereof.
Referring now indetail to the drawings, 10 designates a dolls head provided with an eye set 11 embodying the invention. The head 10 may be of usual construction, having a pair of spaced eye sockets 12 and somewhat thickened side wall portions 13 and 14. The set 11 comprises generally, an extensible frame 15 and a device 16 pivoted thereto, whereby theeye set is mounted, in the head- 10.
The frame 15 comprises a pair of substantially symmetrical nested members 17 and 18 of angular cross-section having contacting walls 19 and 20, respectively, and walls 21 and 22 extending at right angles from said walls 19 and respectively. The rear wall 19 of said member 17 is provided with a horizontal, longitudinal slot 23,'where as the wall.
20 of the inner member 18 is formed with a wall 22. The portions 25 and 26, as well as the portions 27and 28, are provided with small openings 29 and 30 formountingartifi'cial eyeballs 31 on the eye carrier. To this end each of said .eye balls 31 is preferably made of a semispherical piece of metal and is provided with a rearwardly extending tongue 32 passing through said openings 29 and 30, the end 33 of said tongue being bent back by manual pressure or otherwise for firmly retaining the eyes inposition on the carrier. The members 17 and 18.may be slidably moved longitudinally with respect to one another. For fixing said members to each other in various adjusted positions, there is provided an elongated vertical strip of metal 35 having a screw threaded opening 36 adjacent the upper end thereof. A small thumb screw 37 passing through said slots 23, 24 is screwed to the threaded portion 36, said screw being'provided with a knurled head 38 for manipulating the same, and for pressingthe members 17 and 18 together, in any adjusted position to which said members may be moved. With this construction, it will be noted, the distance between the eye balls 31 may be adjusted so that the same eye carrier may be used with dolls heads of various sizes. It will be noted further, that the eyes 31 may also be readily removed or replaced by other suitable eyes, for example, of larger or smaller size. For the purpose hereinafter described, there is attached to the lower end of the strip 35, as for example, by means of an eyelet 39, a weighted member 40, such as a small block of metal or the like material.
The mounting device 16 comprises an elongated thin strip of spring metal 41 bent over at the to as at 42, to form a downwardly exten ing resilient tongue 43, and adapted to contact the neck portion 42a of the dolls head at the bottom end thereof. A pair of hooks 45 soldered as at 46 to said member 41 and formed with inwardly extending portions 47 adapted to engage said tongue, serve to limit the outward movement of said tongue. It will be noted however, that the tongue 43 may be pushed inwardly toward the adjacent portion of the member 41, and upon release will spring back into contact with said portions 47. Attached to said tongue 43, for limited rotative movement, as for example, by means of an eyelet 48, is a member 49 having outwardly extending intles 50 loosely extending through openings 51 in the inner sides of the eye members 31. The construction between the eye members and the members 49 is such as to permit pivotal as well as limited sliding movement between the eyes and said member 49,
to allow for inequalities of size in manufacture of the head. Rotation of said member 49 on said arm 43 may be limited by members 45, or by any other suitable means.
The member 41 is provided with a longitudinal slot 52 and slidably mounted therein is an eyelet 53, to which are pivoted the inner ends of a pair of members 54 and 55,
' having sharp knife edges 56 and 57 respectively, at the outer ends thereof. The inner ends of members 54 and thus have a pin and slot connection with member 41. A pair of links 59 and 60 are pivoted at the outer ends thereof, as for example, by means of e elets 59a and 6011 respectively, to intermeiate portions of said members 54 and 55. The inner ends of said links are pivoted to the said member 41 by means of a common eyelet 62 disposed in alignment with said slot 52. It will be seen that the members 54, 55, 59 and 60 in effect form a toggle device, so that upward pressure on the eyelet or pivot point 53 will cause the outer ends 56 and 57 to be pressed outwardly with considerable force against the thickened side wall portions 13, 14 of the dolls head, as illustrated in Fig. 2.
The eye set 11 may be mounted within the dolls head by means, for example, of the instruments and tools and in the manner described in my co-pending application, Serial No. 527,075 filed on the 2nd day of April, 1931. When the eye set is thus mounted in the head, the spring tongue resiliently presses the eyes within the eye sockets so that upon tilting the doll backwards the weighted member 40 will drop or move away from the dolls face to cause a rolling of the eyes. The upper end of the member 41 serves as a sto for contacting the upper wall 21 of the rame 15, when the weight swings backwards. Since the member 41 may be made of resilient or flexible sheet metal, the impact is softened and the shock on the eye set relieved.
The strip 35 may be centralized with respect to the members 17 and 18 by means of symmetrically disposed tongues 17a and 18a, projecting downwardly from said walls 19 and 20 respectively, as shown in Fig. 2. By bringing the strip 35 between the outer edges of said tongue 17a, 180, the central or medial position of said strip may be maintained when adjusting the said members 17 and In Fig. 6 is shown a modified construction, wherein the strip 35 is replaced by a pair of links 65, 66 pivoted at the upper ends thereof to outwardly extending tongues 67, 68 projecting from the outer ends of said walls 19 and 20 respectively. Said members and 66 are preferably of equal length and pivoted to each other at the lower ends there- 1 of by means of an eyelet 69, or in any other suitable manner. A weighted member 70 may be pivoted to said lower ends by means of a common eyelet 69. With this construction, the weight 70 is retained in central position during adjustment of the members 17 and 18, since said weight is located at the apex of an isometric triangle, the sides of which are the members 65, 66.
It will thus be seen that there is provided a device in which the several objects of this invention are achieved, and which is well adapted to meet the conditions of practical use.
As various possible embodiments might be made of the above invention, and as various changes might be made in the embodiment above set forth, it is to be understood that all matter herein set forth or shown in the accompanying drawings is to be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
