This invention relates to doi1 construction.
An object of this invention is to provide in dol1 construction having rotating eyes, improved means for resiiientiy pressing the eyes into the sockets of the doiis head, the construction being such that the dolls head may be readily assembied and ioosening of the mechanism Within the dol1s head practicaliy prevented.
A further object of this invention is to provide a compact and rugged doii construction of the character descrioed, which shaii comprise few and simple parts, be reiativeiy inexpensive to manufacture, smooth and positive in opera tion and withal practicai and efiicient to a high degree.
Other objects of this invention wii1 in part be obvious and in part hereinafter pointed out.
The invention accordingly consists in the featurcs of construction, combinations of elements, and arrangement of parts which Will be exemplied in the construction hereinafter described, and of which the scope ci application wiii be indicated in the foiiowing ciaims.
In the accompanying drawing, in which is shcwn one of the various possible iliustrative embodiments of this invention,

Referring now in detail to the drawing, li) designates a do1is head embodying the invention. The head ii comprises a front moided section H and a rear molded section i2 having meeting edges l3. The front of the dolis head is provided with eye sockets 54 and with a centra1 recess i5 above the eye sockets. Said head portion H is also formed on theinner surface thereof adjacent the chin with an abutment or thickened portion l5a, and adjacent the edge l3 thereof with a pair of notches 15 receiving the ends of a transverse, horizontal rod.
Fixed within the head is a rail member l8 the front end i9 whereof is received in the recess i5 and having a top wali 22 and downwardly extending side fianges 23 formed with openings 29 adjacent the rear end thereof, for the rod l7. The rod I7 may be upset on opposite sides of the rai] member i8 to prevent sidewise movement of said rail member. Mounted on the rail G8 15 a member 25 made of an elongated strip of bent metal having a straight portion 26 formed with a siot or opening 27 to receive said rail. The distance between the upper edge 28 of the slot and the lower edge 29 thereof is made greater than the height of the rail member for the purpose hereinafter appearing.
Extending downwardiy from the upper portion 25 is a downwardly and rearwardiy inclined portion 39 having a slot si at the iower end thereof for the upper portion of the rail l8. Extending downwardly from said portion 26 is a forwardly inclined portion 32. Riveted to said portion 32 is a strip spring 33 having an upwardiy extending portion 3& formed with a siot 35 receiving the rail therethrough. Extending downwardly irom the portion 34 is a rearwardly inciined portion 36 contacting the top wali 22 of the rail I8. The spring 36 tends to rock the member 25 about the edge 28 in a counterclockwise direction to bring the edge 29 into engagement with the lower edges of the side flanges 23.
. Disposed Within the dolls head is an improved eye unit i!) comprising a square axie or bridge :31 to the central portion of which there is attached a U-shaped strap 2 rotataoie therewith. Fixed to the central portion :33 of the strap 2 is a metal strip 44 carrying a weight 5. Mounted on the outer ends of the axie l are a pair of substantiaily hemi-spherical, hoiiow dolis eyes 53 having diametricaiiy disposed square openings 51 receiving said outer ends of the axie therethrough.
The doiis eyes 50 are disposed in the sockets of the doi1s head. Rotatabiy mounted on the portion of the eye axle between the arms of the strap 52 is a spring 52 made of a strip of spring metal and having a circuiar portion 53 rotatabiy receiving said portion of the axle. The spring 52 extends downwardiy and the free iower end 55 thereof is adapted to contact the abutment iEa of the doiis head. The bottom end of the portion 32 of said member 25 contacts the rear surface of the spring 52 between the portion 53 and the end 55 thereof for resiiientiy pressing the eyes 59 into the sockets l4.
The member 25 may be moved forwardiy on the rail 53 by pressing the bottom end thereof forwardly to rotate the rocking member in a ciockwise direction about the upper edge 23 of the opening 2i, thus moving the lower edge 29 away from the bottom edges of the fianges 23. Rearward pressure on the bottom end of the member 25 wiii not move said member 25 rearwardly on the rail member because of the interengagement of the edges 28 and 29 with the rail member to rock the member 25 thereon. The member 25 may be moved rearwardiy on the rail member by pressing against the upper end thereof above the rail in a rearward direction to rock said member about the lower edge 29 of the opening 21.
It will now be understood that the rail member 3 may be assembled with the rod I 7 and then fitted into the front portion H of the head With the member 25 disposed adjacent the rod ii. The rear portion l2 of the head may then be assembied With the front portion Il t0 fix the rail member and rod within the head. The eyeunit 40 may then be inserted through the neck opening of the dolls head and the member 25 then pushed forwardly by exerting pressure thereon below the rail in a forward direction until the lgttom end of the portion 32 contacts the spring It Wi1l thus be seen that there is provided a device in which the several objects of this invention are achieved, and which is Well adapted to meet the conditions of practical use.
As Various possible embodiments might be made of the above invention, and as various changes might be made in the embodiment set forth, it is to be understood that all matter herein set forth or shown in the accompanying drawing, is to be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
Having thus described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. In dol1 construction, a dolls head having eye sockets, an axle having eyes thereon received within said sockets, a Weight fixed to said axle, a spring having a portion thereof freely encirciing said axle and another portion thereof ireely contacting a portion of the dolls head, and means for pressing an intermediate portion of said spring for resiliently pressing the eyes into the sockets, said axle being unsupported.
2. In doll construction, a dolls head having eye sockets, an eye unit comprising an axle having eyes mounted thereon, a weight fixed to said axle and a strip spring having a portion rotatabiy receiving said axle, and an elongated portion extending from said first portion, said elongated portion being adapted to freely contact the do1ls head and means cooperating With said strip spring for resiliently maintaining the eyes in said sockets, said axle being unsupported.
3. In (1011 construction, a doils head formed With eye sockets, an eye unit comprising an axle withdoiis eyes on the ends thereof received within said sockets, a weight fixed to said axle for rotating the same, a strip spring mounted on said axie and having a portion ireely contacting the dclis head, and means within the dolis head pressing against said spring for yieldingly maintaining said eyes within said sockets, said axie being unsupported.
4. In dol1 construction, a dolls head formed with eye sockets, an eye unit comprising an ax1e with dolls eyes on the ends thereof received within said sockets, a weight fixed to said ax1e for rotating the same, a strip spring rotatabiy mounted on said axle and having a portion free- 1y contacting the dolls head, and means within the *dolls head pressing against said spring for yieldingly maintaining said eyes within said sockets, said axie being unsupported.
5. In doll construction, in combination, a dolls head having eye sockets, a rail member fixed within said head and extending from front t0 rear thereof, a member on said rail, a dolls eye unit comprising an axle having dolls eyes thereon received within said sockets, a spring on said axle engaging said head, and means on said member engaging said spring at a point spaced from said axie for yieldingly pressing said eyes within said sockets.
6. In dol] construction, in combination, a doI1s head having eye sockets, and an abutment on the inner surface thereof adjacent the chin, a rail member fixed within said head and xtending from front to rear, an eye unit comprising an ax1e having dolls eyes thereon received within said sockets, a weight attached to said axle, a spring mounted on said axle and having the lower 7 end thereof contacting said abutment, and means on said rail member engaging said spring for resilientiy pressing the eyes into said sockets.
7. In doll construction, in combination, a dolls head having eye sockets, and an abutment on the inner surface thereof adjacent the chin, a rail member fixed within said head and extending from front to rear, an eye unit comprising an ax1e having dolls eyes thereon received within said sockets, a weight attached to said axie, a spring rotatabiy mounted on said axle and having the lower end thereof contacting said abutment, and means on said rail member engaging said spring for resiliently pressing the eyes into said sockets.
8. For use in combination with a support thereior, an eye unit for a dolls head comprising an axle having a pair of eyes mounted thereon, a weight fixed to said axle and a spring having one end thereof rotatably mounted on said axie, and having the other end thereof free, said free end being adapted to contact an abutment in said doils head, said aXle being unsupported.
9. For use in combination With a support therefor, an eye unit for a .dolls head comprising an axle having dolls eyes mounted thereon, a weight fixed to said axle and a spring rotatabiy mounted on said axle, said axle being unsupported.
10. For use in combination with a support therefor, an eye unit for a dolls head comprising an axle haVing doi1s eyes mounted thereon, a weight fixed to said axle and a spring rotatably mounted on said axle, said spring being made of an elongated strip of spring metal, said axle beiiog unsupported.
11. In dol] construction, a do1ls' head having eye sockets, an ax1e having eyes thereon received within said sockets, a weight fixed to said axle for rotating the same, a spring carrying said axle, said spring having a portion thereof freely contacting the dolls head, and resilient means for pressing said spring for yieldingly maintaining said eyes within said sockets, said axle being unsupported.
12. In doil construction, in combination, a doils head having eye sockets, a rail member fixed within said head and extending from front to rear thereoi, a member slidably adjustable on said rail, a doils eye unit comprising a square axle having dolls eyes thereon received within said sockets, a spring on said axle engaging said head, and means on said slidably movabie member engaging said spring at a point spaced from said axle for yieidingiy pressing said eyes within said sockets.
13. In doIl construction, a dolls head provided with eye sockets, an eye unit comprising an axle having mounted thereon eyes adapted to be received in said sockets, and means for yieldingly pressing said eyes within said sockets whereby said eyes are free to adjust themselves to variations in alignment of the eye sockets, said Iast named means comprising a spring carrying said axle and a second spring pressing against said axlecarrying spring.
