" e s'rAvns A. iernrrrnn, or NEW YORK, Y,
,nnrriEx-racn POWDER BOX ApplicationfilediAhgust 23, 1929. SeriaL'No. 387,827,
This invention relates to-containers in general and more especially "to face power boxes.
Among the objects of the 'present invenpowder boX having'two compartments, one accessible from thetop by means of a cover and the other accessible from the side by means ofa hinged "slide' 7 It is still another 'object of the present invention to provide a face powder box which can conveniently house two types oi pow-' der separated from one another so that a user can as desired'use either one type of powder or the other'ac'oording to the occasion.
' It is well'known that today womenuse dif-Z ferent types and shades of face powder according to the =occasion,such for-instance as a day face powder and a night face powder :9}; which may have different characteristics and generally are 'difierent in sh-ade; Tothis end, the present 'inventioniaims'to provide a cont ainer which has twocompartments sep arated from one anotherfone to'contai-n the day .iace powder the other to contain the night 'facepowde'rh v I g It is still a'furtherbbjectof the present invent-ion to provide a face powder boxhav ing twoseparate compartments, 'onea larger compartment to contain a supply of 'day 7 face powder occupying substantially the upper two-thirdsof the entire interior area. of the containerand anotherasmaller compartment'to contain a supply'r of night face powder occupying substantially the lower one-third of the entire interior. area of the;
container, and which *compa'rtments "are opened indistinct manners, the compartment denwhich is constructedto' receive a sl-ideior drawer being accessible withdrawing the 4 for the day facepowder being accessible from thetop by means of an ordinary cover and the compartment for the night face'pow slide from the lower compartment. l
' Theseand other features,"capabilities and advantages of the invention will appear from the subjoin'ed detaildescription of'onespeaccompanying drawingsin which .cifi'c, embodiment thereof illustrated in the Figure 1 is a side elevation showing the sition in full lines and in open position in dotted lines; i e e I Fi 2 is a plan view of the'sarne with the cover removed and again showing the slide in open position in dotted lines; 7
Fig.3 is transverse section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1'; and v w is a longitudinal section on the line of Fig. l-showing -the slide in "open position; t 7 i In the embodiment illustrated, thereis 'pro-K vided aron'tainer A having "a cylindrical wall member 1 preferably composed of two layersot "cardboard 2 and 8, to the inner periphery of which, adjacent its lower edge, is provided a base port-loner lower box closure" member 4. To the inner periphery near its upper'edge, the cylindrical wall l'h'as secured, thereto asecond container portion B prefer ably having a cylindrical wall com-posed of of the container port-ion B or upper com-partm i The cylindrical wall '5, as clearly -appears from Fig. 3, is substantially twice'th'e size or the cylindricalwall 1 from the bottom 9'to the bottom 4., The cylindrical wall5 of the container portion B above the cylindrical wall 1 of thecontainer portion A forms arecess or seat for the cylindrical wall of'th'e cover C havin'gairupper closure portion 12; To the lower compartment 13 formed by the container portion-A between thebase p013 times 9 an d an 'openingis formed byreinov inga portion of the inner layer 20f thecylin drical wall 1, such openingjextending substantiially one half way"aroiuifldv thecylindrical'wall' 1. The 'outer'layerfi is cut "at.
one end of this opening, to. witat the i'endll and ,fornasa hin eatfth other end of this opening,to wit atthe end l5.
The'portion ofthisf flayer s'aieum'ithis opening so fformed, an'd ior convenience designated 3, is provided with inner layer 3a which is securedito thefouter periphery of the cylindrical wall 16 of the slide D. The
cylindrical wall 16 of the slide D, as illustrated, is preferably composed of three layers of cardboard 17, 18 and 19, the layer 19 preferably continuing into and forming the base portion 20 of the slide D.
The layers 3 and 3a secured to the slide D preferably extend above the opening 21 to form an edge flange which will engage the lower edge of the outer layer 8 of the container portion B, and the layer 3 preferably forms an edge flange which extends beyond the edge of the inner layer 2 at the edge 14, and thus forms a flange closure for two sides of the opening 21. g
, The compartment 10 formed by the container portion .13 is preferably used fora supply of day face powder and the compartment 22 formed by the slide D is preferably used to house'a supply of night face powder. In this manner one and the same container can be used to conveniently house the two main face powders today used by thewelldressed woman, as a result of which the dressing table will be burdened with at least one less container and in turn when traveling the user is again burdened. with at least one less container.
On the other hand, by in cans of this duplex container, the likelihood of spilling is reduced to a minimum in that two entire differ-c ent modes of action are required to gain ac-,
cess to the two compartments, the cover for the upper compartment being removable with anupward-direction and the slide D for the lower compartment being moved laterally at ri ht angles to the movement of the cover C when opening or closing the cover'C.
For conveniently gripping the slide D, the same is preferably provided with a button 9.3 secured to the layerB" and cylindrical wall 16 adjacent to the inner end 24 of the layer 3'.
The likelihood. of spilling powder further minimized by the proportions of the slide D to th'ecompartment 22, it appearing that the outer periphery of the cylindrical wall16 of the slide Dcorresponds in size to the inner periphery of the inner wall of the compartment 22, and that the height of the slide or drawer D is such that its upper edge just clears the lower face of the base 9 of the container 10, as a result of'which the slide D fits snugly in the compartment 22 in closed position and there is no space in the compartment 221 into which the powder may spill whenftheslide D is moved into closed position, the slide D practically displacing all of the area of the compartment 22 when in closedposition. A i
In the present instance, the compartment 10 is shown asat-least twice the size of the compartment 22 so that the compartment 10 can contain thelarger supply, to wit, a supply of day face powder as distinguished from thesupply of night face powder to be housed in the compartment 22, it being understood that ordinaril a great deal more day face powder is use than night face powder.
It will also appear from the foregoing that the cylindrical wall 5 and the cylindrical wall 1 of the container portions B and A respectively form a composite wall for the entire duplex container formed by the container portions B and A respectively.
It is obvious that various modifications and changes may be made to the details of construction without departing from the general spirit of the invention as set forth in the appended claims.
