According to the invention a lifting' ack has incorporated-therewith a casing com-V prising separable portions adapted to be moved into co-operationto enclose the jack when the latter is collapsed. The casing preferably comprises a container within which the collapsed jack lis housed andV a lid mem# ber or members secured to the jack and adapted` to be moved thereby to form a closure to the container when the j ack is collapsed. In. applying the invention to a jack of thekind comprising two sets of four bars arranged in the form of a lazy tongs or toggles device (adjacent bars acting as toggle levers) and a screw device for movingthe pairs of outer ends of the bars towards or away from each other, a lid member may be secured to the corresponding lower bars of adjacent sets thereof. The inner ends of the'lower bars may be attached to a common member having a casing secured thereto with which the lid members co-operate to forma fclosure to the container. l i

By this arrangement the upper surface of the plate E does not eX- tend substantially above the bars D, D1, and the jack when collapsed occupies a small space vertically thereby enabling the container A to be small and of neat appearance. The container A is formed with two longitudinal slots A1 through which the heads of T-shaped bolts yE5 can be inserted into corresponding slot-s E1 in the plate E, the slots E1 being of inverted T-shaped cross-section so that when the heads of the'bolts E5 (see Figure 6)Y are inserted therein and rotated the heads willV be anchored in the plate E. Means supported by the aXle,'spring, or other suitable part of the vehicle, are provided to which the boltsE5 are secured. A lifting jack comprising two sets of four bars arranged side by side and pivoted together to form a toggles device, a screw device for moving the pairs of outer ends of bars towards or away from each other, two l members secured one to each pair of corresponding lower bars in the two sets so as at all times to be parallel to the bars to whichr they are attached, and means attached to the jack and adapted to co-operate with said two members when the jack is collapsed to form a casing enclosing the ack.
