PEDESTAL TRUCK SIDE FRAME.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 2, 1922.,
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HARRY E. Dorian, a
citizen of the United States, residing at St. Louis, in the county of St. Louis and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pedestal Truck Side Frames, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to pedestal truck side frames.
In my copending application, Serial No. 347,976, filed December Q9, 1919, I have disclosed a pedestal truck side frame, including pedestal jaws, which may be applied to a Master Car Builders journal box between the inner bolt lugs of the latter and the dust guard housing, whereupon the side frame and journal box may be moved relatively laterally to each other to their normal relative positions, in which position pedestal jaw extensions act as. an emergency fastening for maintaining the connection between the side franje and the journal box, and therefore for the wheels and axles, in the event that the truck is derailed or is lifted from the track by any part other than the axles. Necessarily, the bearing surfaces,'or
the surfaces at the endsof the jaw extensions, which engage the sides of the journal box in said application, are relatively narrow, being limited in width to an amount slightly less than the distance between the inner. journal box bolt lugs and the dust ard. 4 The' object of this present invention is to provide an arrangement having the. 'advantages of the invention set forth in my said copending application, and which at the same time provides greater bearing surfaces between the pedestal jaw extensions and the journal boxin a manner to meet all of the requirements for successful commercial operation.
This and other objects are `accomplished. by means of the arrangement disclosed on.
the accompanying sheet of drawings, in
which- .Figure 1 is a fragmentary side elevation of a truck side frame embodying my invention, and shown as applied to a standard Master Car Builders journal box;
Figure 2 is a top plan view of the same arrangement; and
Figure 3 is an end view of theside frame shown connected to a journal box of the type above mentioned.
The truck side frame 10 here shown has pedestal jaws 11, the lower ends of which terminate in laterally extending portions l2, which extend toward each other len liwise of the side frame. These extending jaws 19.
ers journal box 13 intermediate its ends, and more particularly intermediate the vertical planes of the journal box' bolt lugs lfl. As 1s apparent from the arrangement disclosed in the figures of the drawings, it will the dust guard 15, but, as stated hereinabove,
I found that there are certain advantages in vengage the sides of the Master Car Buildhaving the jaw extensions of greater width a and, as a matter of fact, of such a width that the jaw extensions cannot be accommodated between the inner journal box lugs 1a and the dust guard 15. In this present case I have increased the width of the jaws 11, and
articularly the lower ends thereof, ineluding the extensions 12, to provide a relatively greater bearing surface between the-inner jaw extensions 12 and the sides of the journal box. Not only is the bearing surface increased, but the tendency for the journal box to twist within the jaws is reduced. rIhe side frame is provided with four housing lugs 16 which fit over the outside and embrace the four upper journal box .bolt lugs 14. Accordingly, when the side frame is in operative position with respect to the journal box, no accidental relatively lateral movement will occur between the parts in question The side frame is applied to the journal box by moving the side frame laterally inwardly with respect to the journal box with the side frame ina slightly elevated position so that the housing lugs 16 will clear the journal box bolt lugs 14;, and when the side frame has been moved into a central position with respect to the journal box, the side frame may be lowered into the operative positionshown the figuresdofdrawrng. In such position the' pedestal jaw ex,
eral movement betweenA the side frame andiy journal box, said pedestal jaws havin porz tions-whichextend inwardly towar each' other and embracethe sides of the 'journal box between the bolt lugs thereof Afor as-1 sisting in vrnaintaining the operative position of said side frame and said journal box, said last mentioned jaw lportions being of such dimensions as to. provide v relatively large bearing engagement withztheside's of said, journal box'and whereby they must be'ap# plied to-the side. frame in a, manner other than between the inner journal box bolt lugs and the dust guard.
having. portions which extend inwardly toward eachother and embrace the sides of the journal box between the bolt lugs there of for assistin in maintaining the operative positlon of sald of such dimensions as to provide relatively said journalbox and whereby applied tothe side fra-nie in a than between the inner and the dust guard.
