Be it known that l, JOHN A.LAMoNr, a citizen oi the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of llllinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Six-Wheel Equalizing-Trucks, of which the following is a specication.
This invention relates to a six-wheel equalizing truck.
`Une object of the invention is to provide a side frame and associated parts, which have vrelative vertical movements, with simple and eiicient meansfor guiding such relative movements and avoiding dililculties caused by shrinkage involving such parts.v l
Another object is to provide a simple and eicient equalizing arrangement wherein n snubbing leffect is given to the movement of equalizing levers and whereby lthe equalizing beam is maintained in its normal position or quickly returned thereto if moved therefrom.
Another object is to provide an equalizing arrangement adapted to meet the various requirements for successful commercial use.
These and other objects are accomplished by means of the arrangement disclosed on the, accompanying sheets of drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a fragmentary longitudinal sectional view, parts being shown in elevation, of la railway car truck embodying my invention;4 l y Fig. 2 is a fragmentary' top plan view of a. side frame forming a part of my truck;
Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken in the plane of line 3--3 of Fig. 1; and
Fig. 4 is a sectional view taken in the plane of line 4--4 of Fig. 1.
The various novel features of the invention will be apparent from the following description and drawings and will be particularly pointed outin the appended claims.
Referring to the figures of the drawings, it will be noted that I have disclosed my invention in connection with a railway car truck including a side frame 10 havin-g a central opening 11 extending through the top wall of the frame and down betweenV the side Walls thereoll for the reception of equalizing parts associated with an intermediate journal box 12. The side frame in each case has spaced walls 13 between which, at the central part of the frame, are two spaced Specification of Letters Patent.

H-shaped beams 14, the webs 15 and inner flanges 16 of which act as guides or a rel= atively vertical movable spring cap il' having depending arms 18 which rest upon and bridge springs v19 mounted upon oppositely arranged brackets 20 formed ou the journal box 12. rllhe spring cap 17 more speciically has end walls 21 which directly cooperate with the webs 15 and inner flanges 16 of the H-shaped beams i4 for guiding the relative vertical movements between the spring cap and side frame. These l-l-shaped beams, which are separate elements secured to th side walls 13 of the side frame, are or deli nite dimensions, are secured in place in the side frame in any suitable manner such as by rivets 22, and are not subject to shrink, age variations such as those caused by tied portions formed integrally with the side walls of the side trame and bridging same. Atfthe same time the li-shapcd beams have relatively smooth surfaces whereby friction is reduced to a minimum, which is not so true of castings. The cap 17 is provided with a centrally arranged groove 23 in which an equalizing beam 2d is pivoted. the outer ends of said equalizing beam curving dowm wardly and being provided withvgrooves in which pins 25 are located for the recap tion of the inner ends of gooseneek shaped equalizing levers 26. The outer ends of these equalizing levers are pivotally supported by the side frames, as at 27. Bolster members 28 rest upon intermediate portions oi the equalizing levers. The inner ends of the equalizing levers have vertically extending portions which terminate in the laterally etitending portions which rest upon the hall.e round pivot pins 25.
, Not only is the spring cap 1'? guided in its vertical movements by the ici-shaped beams, but it is also guided by wall portions 30 formed integrally with the side frame. These wall portions 30 also directly guide the relative vertical movements ot the side frame and the journal boi; 12. The arm portions 18o the spring cap 1'? are provided with pockets 31 for the reception oi springs 32 which extend in an oblique direction di verging upwardly and outwardly Jfrom each other. More specifically speaking, 'these springs 32 respectively extend at right angles to a line connecting the pivot points f( and 25 of the equalizing levers. These spri are directly engaged by the equaliaing v2t and as a matter ot tact, the equa-lining springcap 17.. its a result thereof the equal- I izing beam 24; is maintained in its normal horizontal position, or it moved therefrom is quickly returned thereto. rJlhese springs l32 have an additional function in thatv they have a snubbing .action upon the equalizingir levers 26. These springs 32 have an initial compression equal to the movement ot the ends of 'the equaliringrr levers from the hormal position and whenfso compressed have a rated capacity sutiicient to overcome the friction at pivot points 23 and 25.'

l claim: i 1. In a railway car, the combination of an intermediate journal box. springs carried.
thereby,'a spring cap bridging: said springs. an equalizing beam pivotally mounted on said springr cap, and springs interposed between said spring cap and equalizing beam for maintaining' the equaliaingif beam in its normal horizontal position.
52..,ln a railway car truck. the combina-` tioriof an intermediate journalbox. springs laiii'ed thereby, a spring cap bridging said springs, an equalizingy beam pivotally mountf ed on said spring cap, and means interposed between said spring cap and equalizingbeam -for maintaining the equalizing beam in its normal horizontal position.
3. .ln a railway car truck. the combination of an intermediate journal box. resilient means carried thereby, a sprinpr cap mounted on said resilient inrans, an eqnalizing beam p iyotally carried by said spring cap., equalizing levers operatively connected to said equalizing beam and having a pivotal; rela tion with respect thereto, and means acting upon said equalizini;` levers and beams for overcoming friction at pivot points and for asesinos maintaining the equalizing beam in its normal horizontal position.
4. ln a railway car truck, the combination ot'. an intermediate journal box, springs carried thereby, a sprinr cap bridging said springs, an equalizing beam pivotally carried by' said cap, springs carried by said spring cap and interposed between the latter and the beam, and equalizing levers operatively connected to said equalizing beam and having pivotal relation with respect thereto, the springs carried by said cap extending at yright angles to i line run through the pivotal points of said equalizing leversvfor overcoming friction at the pivot points and for maintaining the equalizing beam in its -nor. malhorizontal position. j
5. In a railway car"truck, the combination of a side frame, an intermediate journalv box, springs carried thereby, a spring cap bridging said springs and having a relative movement with respect to the side frame, an equaliringbeam carried by said springcap, means interposed between said spring cap and beam for maintaining the equalizing beam in its normal horizontal position, and means for guiding the spring cap in its relative movements.
6. ln a railway car truck, the combination of a side frame having spaced walls, sepa rate guide members secured between said walls. and equalizing mechanism including a movable spring ,capl guided. in its relative movements with respect to said side frame by said guiding members.
7. ln a railway car truck, a side frame having vspacedside walls and a top wall, the latter havingT an opening therethrough for the reception of equalizing mechanism.
8. 1n a railway car truck, a side iii-ame having an opening in the top thereof, and equalizing` mechanism parts which are insertible through said opening for placing said parts in operative position.
