To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that l JOHN A.- LAMoN'r, a citizen of the Unite States, residing at `Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Railway-Car Trucks, of which thefollowing is a specification. 1 This invention relates to a railway car truck, and more particularly to a flexible connection between relatively movable truck side frame members in six-wheel trucks.
One object of the invention is to provide an improved exible connection between the relatively rigid and iiexible side frame members which will permit an increased freedom of movement.
Another object is to provide a simple and ecient pivotal connection between side frame members which also serves as means for securing a journal box to the side frame. Another object is to provide simple and improved pivotal connection between relatively rigid and exible side frame members adapted -to meet the various requirements for successful commercial operation.
These and other objects are accomplished by means of the arrangement disclosed on the accompanying sheets of drawings in which- Figure 1 is a fragmentary side elevation of a railway car truck embodying my invention;
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary top plan view of the same;
Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken in the plane of line 3-3 of Fig. 2; and
Fig. Il' is a fragmentary side elevation, parts being in section, of a railway car truck embodying a modification of my invention.
The various novel features of the invention will be apparent from the following description and drawin s and will be particularly pointed out in t e appended claims.
Referring to the figures of the drawings, it will be noted that my invention is disclosed in connection with an articulated truck side frame having a rigid side frame member 10 and a flexible side frame member 11, the latter having` its inner end 12 extend into the inner forked end of the rigid side frame member and between the side flanges 13 thereof. rllhe inner end of the dexible` side frame member 11 terminates in a circular portion 111 which .isreceived by a socket portion 15 formed between the side walls of the rigid frame member 10, which arrangement permits of arelative vertical pivotal movement between the side frame members 10 and 11. l The inner circular portion 14 of the exible side frame member 11 is provided with a vertical opening 16 for the reception of a vertical pivot pin 17. ln order that the relative vertical pivotal movement between the side frame members 10 and 11' is not interfered with, the'opening 16 i is tapered in such a manner that its smallest cross dimension is slightly larger than that of the diameter of the pin 17, the size of said opening increasing in both directions outwardly. ln other words, the wall of the opening 16 is provided with a convex surface. This vertical pivot pinV 17 also permits relative sidewise pivotal lmovement between the side frame members 10 and 11, the connection between the side frame members l0 and 11 thereby permitting a relatively horizontal and relatively vertical movement.`
1n the arrangement disclosed in Figs. 1
to 3 inclusive, the vertically arranged pivot pin 17 extends downwardly through an opening 18 in one of the laterally extending bracket portions 19 of the journal box-20, thereby acting as means for securing the journal box to the truck side frame, it being understood that a locking key 21 extends through the lower end of the pin 17 for preventing accidental withdrawal of said pin. The journal box has two laterally extending brackets 19 upon which a plurality of coil springs 22 and 23 rest, said coil springs being interposed between said journal box bracket portions 19 and portions of the truck side frame. llt will be noted also that the vertical pivot pin 17 acts in a manner to position and retain the springs in a given position with respect to the journal box and -side frame.
Referring to Fig. 4, it will be noted that ll have shown a modification in which the vertically arranged pivot pin 24 passes only through the side frame members 10 and 11; in other words, it serves the sole function of forming a pivotal connection between the side frame members. It will `be noted also that the point of pivotal connection between the side frames is an increased distance beyond the associated journal box.
' said side frame members.
There may be various other modifications, and it is my intention to cover all such modiications which do not involve a departure l. In a railway car truck, the! combina-- tion of articulated side frame members, and a vertically arranged ivot pin passing through openings in said) side frame members, one of said openings being formed to permit relative vertical movement between 2. In a railway car truck, the combination of articulated side frame members having openings, and a pivot pin extending through said openings, one of said openings being formed for permitting a relative ivotal movement of said side frame mem ers in a plurality of directions.
3. In a railway car truck, articulated side frame members havin coperating curved portions to permit re ative vertical movement between said side frame members, and a vertically arranged pivot pin extending through openin s in said side frame members, one of sai openings being formed to permit relative vertical movement between said side frame members. .4. In a railway ear truck,the combinat1on of articulated side frame members one -terminating in a rounded portionand the other having a socket portion for receiving said rounded portion for permitting relative pivotal movement in one direction, and a vertically arranged pivot pin extending through opemngs in said side frames for permitting .relat1ve lateral pivotal movement etween s aid side frame members, one of said openings being formed to permit relative vertical pivotal movement between said side frame members.
5. In a railway car truck, the combination of articulated side frame members, a pivot pin extending through openin in said members, one of said openings eing formed to permit a relative movement between said side frame members in a given direction, and a journal box secured to one of said side frame members by said pivot Sblgned at Chicago, Illinois, this 4th day of ovember, 1920.
