LAWRENCE RICHARDSON, or CHICAGO, ILLINOIS. I
SIX-WHEEL annex.
Application filed August as, 1924. Serial No. 734,589.
To all whom it may concern: a
a This invention relates to [six-wheel trucks,
and more particularly to cooperative, constructive features of the side frame members and intermediatejournal box.
One object of the invention is to simplify the journal box ends of the associated side frame members in a manner to reduce the weight thereof by reducing the weight of at least one aw ofone of said members, and still provide proper bufling surfaces for the intermediate journal box and also allow the necessary freedom of movement due to track irregularities, etc.
Another object is to provide a cooperative arrangement between the intermediate journalbox and side frame members of a six wheel truck wherein the parts cooperate in a manner to meet all requirementsunder service conditions.
These and other objects are accomplished by means of the arrangement shown on the accompanying sheet of drawings in which,
Figure l is a fragmentary side elevation of a six-wheel truck embodying my invention, and
Figure 2 is a similar fragmentary view, a part of one end of one of the side frame members being broken away to. more clearly illustrate the cooperation between the intermediate journal box and the innerends of the side frame members.
One embodiment of the invention is illustrated in connection with a six-wheel truck having side frame members 10 and 11 each of which carries an associated end journal box 12 and has an opening 13 for the reception of a transverse bolster member 14 and springs 15 upon which the bolster members rest. The bolster, which preferably is an integrally formed one, forms the draft connection between the side frame members 10 and 11.
This invention has to do primarily with cooperative constructive features between the intermediate journal box 16 and the inner ends of the side frame members 10 and 11. The inner end of the side frame member 10 has but a single jaw 17 which furnishes a bufiing face 18 against which the'lefthand side of the journal box 16 may bear. I-Ieretofore, the inner end of one of the, side frame members has been provided with oppositely arranged jaws for embracing the sides and top of the journal box to hold the latter in proper operative position and to provide oppositely arranged bufling surfaces. In this particular instance, I purpose to simplify and lighten the inner end of the'side-frame member in question by omitting one of the jaws or providing but a single jaw against which one side of the journal box 16 may buff, However, a buffing surface is provided for the other or righthand side of the journal box,'as shown in the figures of thedrawinga This buffing surface 19 is formed on a slight projection 20 at the inner end of the associated side frame member 11. It will be noted that the buffing surface 19'is slightly inclined so that in order for it to become effective for bufling there must be a relative vertical angular movement between the side frame member or a relative pivotalmovement of the journal box about its upperrighthand corner, which is confined by a relatively small toeportion 21. It isseen, therefore, that the journal box 16 has associated bufiing surfaces 18 and 19 for the opposite sides thereof formed 011 the associatedside frame members, and at the same time the use of a plurality of jaws on a single side frame member is obviated, a relatively small toe 21 being substituted for one of the jaws and forming a pivotal point about which the upper righthand corner of the intermediate journal box 16 may pivot slightly preparatory to the righthand side of the journal box passing into engagement with the buffing surface 19. The intermediate journal box is carried entirely within the side frame member 10 and the other side frame member 11 has a projecting portion 22 which rides upon the upper wall portion 28 of the side frame member 10 and preferably between the side flanges 24 on the side frame member 10. This arrangement also provides for the necessary flexibility without cramping of associated parts, to properly compensate for track irregularities.
I claim 1. In a six-wheel truck, the combination of an intermediate journal box and a side frame comprising two relatively movable side frame members, the inner ends of which cooperate to maintain said journal box in position, each of said side frame-members having but a single jaw to provide a buffing face for an associated side of said journal box and one only of said side framemembers having a toe portion for cooperating to confine said journal box in its proper position.
2. In a six-wheel truck, the combination of an intermediate journal box, and a side frame comprising two relatively movable side frame members, the inner ends of which cooperate'to maintain said journal box in position, each of said side frame members having buta single jaw to provide a bufling face for an associated Sideof said box, one of said bufiing faces normally being inclined with respect to the other buffing face to permit relative movement between the side frame members and the journal box' in accordance with track irregularities.
3; In a six-wheel truck, the combination of an intermediate journal box, and a side frame comprising two relatively movable side frame members, theinner ends of which cooperateto maintain said journal box in position, each of said side frame members havingbut a single jaw to provide a buff ng face for an associate side of said box, one of said buffing faces normally being inclined with respect to the other buffing face to permit relative movement between the side frame members and the journal'box in accordance with track irregularities, and one only of said side frame members having a toeportion for cooperating'to confine said journal box and about which the journal box may slightly pivot before engaging a certain one of said jaw buffing faces.
4. In a six-wheel truck, the combination of an intermediate journal box, and aside frame comprising two relatively movable side frame members, the inner ends of which cooperate to maintain said journal box in position, one of said side frame members having only a single jaw roviding a bufiing face for one side of SiLlCljOUlIlELl box and having atoe portion for engaging the upper portion of the other sideof said journalbox, said other side frame member having but a single buffing face for said other side of said journal box and being inclined to permit a vertical movement of saidjournalbox and inner ends of said side frame members without cramping any of the associated parts.
5; In a six-wheel truck, the combination ofan intermediate journal box, and a side frame comprising two relatively movable side frame members, the inner ends of which cooperate to maintain said journal box in position, each of said side frame members having but a single jaw to provide a buffing face for an associated side of-said box, one of said bufiing faces normally being spaced wlth respect to the associated side of the ournal box to permit a relative fulcruming I movement of said journal box in accordance with track irregularities.
