My invention relatesto railway car trucks and more particularly toa novel journal box mounting for a-freight'car truck.
The general object of my invention isto design a novel truck wherein the journal boxes" of the wheel and axle assemblies are capabl'e'of'limi'ted' relative vertical andhorizontal angling withrespect to the truck side frames which are"inter= connected by an intervening bolster in' the-conventional manner.
My invention is illustrated as applied to a-ro1ler bearing journal box to which the invention is especially adapted; however, it will be under-- stood that my novel principle maybe applied to other'types of boxes if desired.

As will be seen in Figure 3, each jaw 8 is tapered toward its lower extremity and presents at opposite sides thereof the diagonal converging inboard and outboard plane faces 42 and 44 respectively which are afforded clearance from the adjacent surfaces 46 and 48 of the inboard and outboard journal box flanges I2 and I4 during relative vertical angling between the wheel and axle assembly 28 and the side frame unaccompanied by any horizontal angling therebetween.
When, however, under severe service conditions as, for example, when the truck proceeds around a curve in the track, it will be understood that extreme vertical angling may be accompanied by simultaneous extreme horizontal angling between the side frame and the wheel and axle assembly 28, in which event, one of the surfaces 46 or 48 will abut the associated surface 42 or 44 to limit this extreme horizontal and vertical angling which may occur with great force. In order to accommodate such conditions and to prevent damage to the various truck parts, the surfaces 46 and 48 and the surfaces 42 and 44 are so designed as to insure engagement between one pair of surfaces 42 and 46 or 44 and 48. Thus, it will be noted that said surfaces 42 and 44 converge downwardly, and the surfaces 46 and 48 of each pair of inboard and outboard journal box flanges I2 and I4 converge toward the longitudinal axis or center line of the wheel and axle assembly 28, and these various surfaces are so proportioned that a combination of extreme horizontal and vertical angling of the wheel and axle assembly 28 relative to the side frame results in flat face engagement between one pair of surfaces 42 and 46 or 44 and 48 throughout substantially the entire area thereof and substantially simultaneous line bearing between the diagonally opposite pair of surfaces.
Each jaw 8 is connected to one pair of the inboard and outboard flanges I2 and I4 by means of a bolt and nut assembly 50 secured to said flanges and extending through an enlarged slot or opening 52 (Figure 1, left) in said jaw. It will be understood that the slot 52 is sufliciently large to afford clearance from the bolt and nut assembly 50 during the above-mentioned angling between the wheel and axle assembly and the side frame.
It is to be understood that I do not wish to be limited by the exact embodiment of the device shown which is merely by way of illustra tion and not limitation as various and other forms of the device will, of course, be apparent to those skilled in the art without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the claims.
I claim:
1. In a journal box mounting for a railway car truck, a side frame tapering in width toward the end thereof and formed at said end with spaced depending pedestal jaws each presenting substantially identical plane abutment faces on the inboard and outboard sides thereof converging toward the bottom thereof, a wheel and axle assembly including a journal box received between said jaws and presenting at opposite sides thereof spaced bearing surfaces arcuately formed transversely of said frame and affording seats respectively for wear plates welded to said frame intermediate said jaws, said box having at each side thereof inboard and outboard flanges embracing the adjacent jaw and normally spaced therefrom, said flanges presenting inboard and outboard abutment surfaces converging toward the longitudinal axis of said assembly whereby extreme vertical and horizontal angling of said assembly relative to said frame is limited by engagement between one of said surfaces and the adjacent face, and inboard and outboard lugs on said box upstanding therefrom centrally thereof, said lugs presenting horizontally arcuate faces on their adjacent surfaces for abutment with said frame to limit relative vertical angling between said assembly and said frame unaccompanied by relative horizontal angling.
2. In a journal box mounting for a railway car truck, a side frame tapering in width toward the end theerof and formed at said end with spaced depending pedestal jaws, each presenting substantially identical plane abutment faces on the inboard and outboard sides thereof converging toward the bottom thereof, a wheel and axle assembly including a journal box received between said jaws and affording a rockable seat for said frame, said box having at each side thereof inboard and outboard flanges at opposite sides of the adjacent jaws, said flanges presenting respectively inboard and outboard abutment surfaces converging toward the longitudinal axis of said assembly, whereby extreme vertical and horizontal angling of said box relative to said frame is limited by engagement between one of said surfaces and the adjacent face, central inboard and outboard upstanding lugs on said box at opposite sides of said frame for abutment therewith to limit relative vertical angling between the box and the frame unaccompanied by horizontal angling, said lugs being horizontally arcuate on the surfaces thereof adjacent said frame to accommodate said horizontal angling.
3. In a journal box mounting for a railway car truck, a frame member with spaced pedestal jaws, a journal box received therebetween and comprising at each side thereof inboard and outboard flanges with abutment faces on their adjacent sides converging toward the center line of said box, said frame being provided with spaced wear plates welded thereto and seated upon transversely arcuate bearing surfaces atop said box at opposite sides thereof, each of said jaws presenting abutment surfaces on opposite sides thereof converging downwardly, said abutment surfaces and faces being so formed and arranged that upon simultaneous extreme vertical and horizontal angling of said box relative to said frame, the inboard face at one side of said box is in engagement with the adjacent surface, and the outboard face at the opposite side of said box is in engagement with the adjacent surface, one of said engagements being along flat areas, and means interlocking each jaw with the adjacent flanges, said means including a rigid member secured to said last-mentioned flanges and extending through an enlarged opening through said jaw, said rigid member being afforded sufficient clearance from the margins of said opening to accommodate said horizontal and vertical angling.
4. In a journal box mounting for a railway car truck, a frame member with spaced pedestal jaws, a journal box received therebetween and comprising at each side thereof inboard and outboard flanges at opposite sides of the adjacent jaw and formed with abutment faces on their adjacent sides convergin toward the center line of said bcx, said box affording a rockable seat for said frame, each of said jaws presenting abutment surfaces on opposite sides thereof converging downwardly, said abutment surfaces and abutment faces being so formed and arranged that upon simultaneous extreme vertical and horizontal angling of saidv box relative to said frame, one of said faces is in flat face engagement with the adjacent surface, lugs on top of said box at the inboard and outboard sides of said frame for abutment therewith to limit vertical angling of the box unaccompanied by horizontal angling thereof, said lugs being horizontally arcuate on their adjacent surfaces to accommodate horizontal angling of said box.

In a journal box mounting for a railway car truck, a frame member with spaced pedestal jaws, a journal box received therebetween and comprising at each side thereof inboard and outboard flanges at opposite sides of the adjacent jaw and formed with abutment faces on their adjacent sides converging toward the center line of said box, said box affording 'a rockable seat for said frame, each of said jaws presenting abutment surfaces on opposite sides thereof converging downwardly, said abutment surfaces and abutment faces being so formed and arranged that upon simultaneous extreme vertical and horizontal angling of said box relative to said frame, one of said faces is in engagement with the adjacent surface, and a bolt and nut assembly loosely received within a slot in each jaw and secured to the associated flanges,

In a journal box mounting for a railway car truck, a side frame tapering in width toward the end thereof and formed at said end with spaced depending pedestal jaws, each presenting substantially identical plane abutment faces on the inboard and outboard sides thereof converging toward the bottom thereof, a wheel and axle assembly including a journal box received be tween said jaws and affording a rockable seat for said frame, said box having at each side thereof inboard and outboard flanges at opposite sides of the adjacent jaws, said flanges presenting respectively inboard and outboard abutment surfaces converging toward the longitudinal axis of said assembly, whereby extreme simultaneous vertical and horizontal angling of said box relative to said frame is limited by engagement between one of said surfaces and the adjacent face.

In a journal box mounting for a railway car truck, .a frame member with spaced pedestal jaws, a journal box received therebetween and comprising at each side thereof inboard and outboard flanges with abutment faces on their adjacent sides converging toward the center line of said box, said frame being provided withspaced wear plates welded thereto and seated upon transversely arcuate bearing surfaces atop said box at opposite sides thereof, each of said jaws presenting abutment surfaces on opposite sides thereof converging downwardly, said abutment surfaces and faces being so formed and arranged that upon simultaneous extreme vertical and horizontal angling of said box relative to said frame, one of said faces at one side of said box is in engagement with the adjacent surface.

In a journal box mounting for a railway car truck, a frame member with spaced pedestal jaws, a journal box received therebetween and comprising at each side thereof inboard and outboard fianges at opposite sides of the adjacent jaw and formed with abutment faces on their adjacent sides converging toward the center line of said box, said box affording a rockable seat for said frame, each of said jaws presenting abut- REFERENCES CITED The following references are of record in the file of this patent:
