PROUTY, OF HERMOSA BEACH, CALIFORNIA, ASSIGNOR TO METLOX CORPO- RATION, LTD., OF MANHATTAN BEACH, CALIFORNIA, A CORPORATION OF CALI- FORNIA CERAMIC CHARACTER OR SYMBOL Application filed November 1, 1929. Serial No. 404,048.
to provide a simple, compact and inexpensive fastening device for ceramic characters.
My invention possesses many other advantages, and has other objects which may be made more easily'apparent from a consideration of an embodiment of my invention. For this purpose I have shown one form in the drawings accompanying and forming part of the present specification. I shall now proceed to describe this form in detail, which illustrates the general principles of my invention; but it is to be understood that this detailed description is not to be taken in a limiting sense, since the scope of my invention is best defined by the appended claims.
Referring to the drawings:
Figure 1 is a View of the face or exposed side of a sign character embodying my invention;
Fig. 2 is a sectional view exhibiting a means for attaching the character to a supporting structure; and
Fig. 3 is a view of a portion of the reverse side of the base that supports the character.
The character 11 is made from ceramic material, such as clay or porcelain, and is preferably highly glazed on its exposed face. It is intended to be supported on a base 12, made from appropriate materialsuch as sheet metal.
In order to hold the character in place, use is made of a number of recesses such as 13 in the reverse side of the character 11. Each of these recesses is preferably so formed that it widens at the bottom, to form a wedge shaped space. Inserted in this space is a metal fastener 14, having a head portion that is formed to fit the recess asby appropriatelypressing a strip of metal forming this fastener, into the recess. The two extending ends 15, 16 of the fastener pass through an appropriate aperture in base 12 and are turned back so as to be close to the lower surface of the base.
In order to hold the fastener or clip 14 relation.
in place, I prefer to fill in the cavity formed rm and fastener are maintained in an interengaging relation.
2. A ceramic symbol having one or more recesses in its reverse side, and a fastener having a head portion held in the recess and a pair of extending portions arranged to be projected through an aperture in a support and to be bent in opposite directions over the edge of the aperture, said head portion having a contour corresponding to the contour of the recess, whereby the symbol and fastener are held in an interengaging relation.
3. A ceramic symbol having one or more recesses in its reverse side, and a fastener formed of a strip of material, a portion of the strip extending into the recess and forming a head, another portion thereof extending out-of the recess and arranged to project through an opening in a support and to be bent over the edge of the opening, said head portion having a contour corresponding to the contour of the recess, whereby the symbol and fastener are held in an interengaging 4. A ceramic symbol having one or more recesses in its reverse side, a fastener formed of a strip of material, a portion of the strip extending into the recess and forming a head conforming with the recess, another portion thereof extending out of the recess and arranged to project through an opening in a support and to be bent over the edge of the opening, and means whereby the head is fastened in place in the recess.
5. A ceramic symbol having one or more recesses in its reverse side, and a fastener his formed of a strip of material, an intermediate portion of said strip extending into the recess, said recess being Wider at the bottom than at the top, and the intermediate portion 5'." of the strip having a contour conforming thereto both ends of the strip extending out of the recess and arranged to project through an opening in a support and to be bent in 0pposite directions over the edge of the open- 6. A ceramic symbol having one or more recesses in its reverse side, a fastener formed of a strip of material, an intermediate portion of said strip extending into the recess,
5 said recess being Wider at the bottom than at the top, and the intermediate portion of the strip having a contour conforming thereto, both ends of the strip extending out of the recess and arranged to project through an 39 opening in a support and to be bent in opposite directions over the edge of the opening, and a plastic filling in the recess that hardens to hold the strip in place therein.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set as my hand.
WILLIS O. PROUTY.
