UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THOMAS C. MARIS, OF MARIETTA, OHIO, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF HIS RIGHT TO SAMUEL M. HART, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN HARNESS BREAST-COLLARS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. IS5,944, dated January 2, 1877; application filed November 4, 1876.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, THOMAS O. MARIS, of Marietta, in the county of Washington and State of Ohio, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Breast-Collar and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure l of the drawings is a representation of my breast-collar applied, and Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a perspective view thereof.
This invention relates to breast-collars for horses; and it consists in constructing them with an outward bow or curve for the animals throat, and in providing said how with a metal stiffening-plate.
In the annexed drawings, A designates a leather breast-collar, and B a ueck-strap'passing over the horses neck, and secured to said collar near the draft ends thereof. Collar A is provided at said ends with buckles a a, for the attachment of the traces, and with protecting-straps a a, which intervene between the said buckles and the animals body. The collar immediately at the front is sharply curved, forming an outward projection, A, which is stiffened by similarly-curved metal plate 0. (Shown in detail in Fig.2.) Said metal plate is provided at each end with a flat extension or attaching-flange, 0 These flanges are riveted to said collar on each side of projection A To make the attachment more secure, said collar is provided with an outer thickness or strip of leather, A, on each side of projections A and flanges G are secured by riveting, as above described, between the front ends of said outer strips A and the body of the collar. The curved plate or stiffeningbow is provided with a metal eye or slotted plate, for the attachment of a strap to hold the collar in place.
By the above construction the horses windpipe is preserved from pressure, since the windpipe sets within said how A and the strain comes mainly upon the animals breast. The surface presented to his throat and breast is leather, and causes no abrasion of the skin, While the stiffening-plate 0 gives to it all the rigidity of metal.
Various modifications may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. A breast-collar formed with a bowed portion, 0, and a correspondiugly-shaped stiffening-plate outside of said bow, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. A breast-collar, A, provided with a leather front bow, A a curved stiffening-plate, 0, having extensions or flanges 0 O and outer leather strips A A between which strips and said collar the said extensions or flanges are secured, substantially as set forth.
3. As an article of manufacture, a curved metal plate, 0, provided with flat extensions or flanges O 0 and slotted strap-attachingplate 0 substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
THOMAS C. MARIS.
