NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JACOB STRAITS, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
HORSE-COLLAR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 304,969, dated September 9, 1884.
Application filed March 20, 1884. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JACOB SrRAUs, of the city'of St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Horse-Collars, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, and in which- Figure l is a view of the front of my improved collar. Fig. 2 is an edge view, partly in section. Fig. 3 is a back view. Fig. 4. is a lower end view. Fig. 5 is a similar View, part removed. Fig. 6 is a section taken on line 6 6, Fig. 1. Fig. 7 is a vertical section of the lower part of the collar taken on line 7 7, Fig. 4, on a larger scale. Fig. 8 is a vertical section taken on line 8 8, Fig. l, on a larger scale.
My invention relates to certain improvements in those leather horse-collars whose shoulderpads do not extend beneath the throat of the animal.
My improvement consists in features of novelty hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, A is the rim or fore-Wale; B, the pads, formed of front pieces, B, rear piece, B, and filling B.
The broad rigid band or neck 0 is formed by the laps b b and a a of the rim and padpieces, having within them a strengthening and stiffening strip, I, as shown and described in Letters Patent N 0. 255,206, granted to me March 21, 1882. The rear pieces, B, and filling B do not extend beneath the throat; but the front piece, B, extends beneath the throat or neck of the animal, to provide a broad throat-piece or portion, I), and is re-enforced by one or more thicknesses of material, D, to give additional strength and thickness to this part of the collar.
D is a throat-piece connecting the rear pieces, B, and forming the lap I) (see Fig. 8) at that portion. These throat pieces are formed of leather, and present a very rigid unstuffed throat portion, which is designed not to touch the animals throat or shoulder when the collar is in use, and it is therefore preferably curved outward, as shown in Fig. 8, so that there will be no danger of it coming in contact with the animals throat at any time.
A collar thus constructed has every advantage of a throatless collar, in that it does not come in contact with the animals breast or throat, and at the same timeithas the strength or chafe the animal s neck on the application of the harness to the collar.
This collar takes less material and labor in its construction than ordinary collars.
The neck 0 at the bottom of the collar has strengthening and stiffening strips or pieces I, (see Figs. 2, 5, 7, and 8,) which may extend up the sides of the collar as far as desired, and one or more of them may extend all the way around the collar, as in my patent above referred to. The stiff and rigid throat portion is formed with a slot or opening, J, to provide a loop to receive a breast or pole strap or martingale, which is a great convenience and avoids the necessity of wrapping the strap around the collar where it is liable to come in contact with the animals neck or throat. This opening cannot of course be formed in a collar having a stuffed throat.
Having thus described my invention, the following is what I claim as new therein and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. In a horse-collar, the combination of rim A, front pad-pieces, B, having broad stiff throat portion D, rear pad-pieces, B, reenforce throat-piece 1), connecting the rear padpieces. a rigid neck, 0, and strengtheningstrip I, the throat-pieces forming a rigid unstuffed throat portion bet-ween the "pads, as shown and described.
2. A horse-collar having a rigid unstuffed throat portion provided with a slot or opening to form a loop, as set forth.
JACOB STRAITS.
In presence of Gno. H. KNIGHT, SAML. KNIGHT.
