This invention relates to an wrench of the shiftable jaw type. Y
One object of the invention is to provide a device of this character employing a movable jaw which maybe quickly and easily shifted to an adjusted position. 1
Another object of the invention is to provide a wrench employing a locking member which may be disposed out of engagement with the handle shank employed so that the movable jaw will be permitted to shift freely. along the handle shank. Y
A further object of the invention is to pro-- vide a wrench wherein the movable jaw may be eifectually locked in an adjusted position.
A still further object of. the invention is to provide a wrench which Vwill require a minimum amount of effort for its efficient operation.

Slidably connected withthe yoke 14 is a substantially U-shaped locking member which is provided with an elongated shank 21 gradually thickened` toward its lower end and formed with an inclined facev 22.v Riveted or otherwise secured to the shank 21 is a wedging block 23 defining a shoulder 24:,E said block extending throughout substan tially half the inner length of said locking member; and,` as best seen in Fig. 4 of the shank is a head 27 which is substantially rectangular. As shown in Figs. 2 and 3 of the drawings, the locking member is freely received etween the sides of the strap 16 of the yoke 14 so that the straight outer face of the shank 21 of said member confronts the face`3 'of the handle shank 1, while the lug 26 of said member projects beneath the lower end face of the spring seat 18. Associated with said lockingmember is a coil spring29 having one end portion thereof engaging about the pin 28j-and its` opposite end portion engaging v. in the conical socket 19 of the spring seat 18,

In use, the hood 30 isgripped and retracted for shifting the face 2 2 of the shank 21,;of the locking member to a'position opposite thev flat inner face 2() of thespring seatr 18,'when the lower endof the ,hood may then be rocked` outwardly to `engage the shoulder 211 beneath thelower end'face of said spring seat for holding the locking member and hoodv re tracted. The shank ofthe yoke may then be'shifted away'fromv the face 2 ofthe. handle shank so that the teeth 11y 'are freed from the teeth 6. The ,movable jawinayvvthen be. shifted longitudinally ofthe 4handle shank.
The relatively iXed jaw is'irst engaged with one sidevof the work to bemoved, when the movable jaw Sis-shifted to engage the opposite side of said work. The hood` l is then f rocked toward the handle shank for freeing theshoulder2/1when the spring 29 will urge thelocking inemberupwardly so that the Wedge face. 25, will-coact with theface 20`of the spring seat` 18 and cause the lower end 'I portion 'of the shank of said member to bind between "the spring seat and the face 3 of the handle shank 1 so that :the yoke 111 will be rockedto engage the teeth 11 thereof'with the teeth 6 oflthe shank. `Thus the locking'memberwill serve to eectually lock the movable jaw when adjusted and, as will be seen, will effectually prevent accidental slipping of said jaw. Should the spring 29 become weakened so as to necessitate replacement thereof, it will be observed that the pin 28 may be removed and the spring withdrawn without displacing any of the other parts.
It is pointed out that, if the spacing vblock 11, the aw 8, or the yoke 14 should become worn or mutilated, any of said parts may be withdrawn and replaced by removing the rivets 17.
Having thus claim:
1. A wrench including `a handle shank having teeth and terminating at its upper end in a fixed jaw, a movable jaw associated with said fixed jaw and having teeth normally engaging the teeth of the handle shank, ayoke embracing' the movable jaw and having straps surrounding `the handle shank, one ofsaid straps being extended to project rearwardly of said handle shank and .being formed with a spring seat, Va locking member associated with said latter mentioned strap described the invention, I

2. A wrench including a handle 'shank' having a fixed jaw, a movablej aw 'associated therewith, a yoke embracing Vsaid movable jaw. andvhaving straps surrounding the handle shank for fslidably connecting said movable jaw with saidhandle shank, a locking membery disposed between the outer portion-of one strap and the adjacent face of the handle sha-nk, means normally urging the locking member upwardly for rigidly connecting the fixed and movable aws, and a hood connected to the locking member and outer portion of the last mentioned strap and having a finger' lug, said hood and finger lug protecting the locking member and permitting ready manual retraction of said locking member for freeing the movable aw with respect to the fixed jaw.
