ANTHONY M. SMITH, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO JOHN 0. SMITH, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN TOY BLOW-GUNS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 1 85,789, dated December 26, 1876; application filed June 2, 1676.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANTHONY M. SMITH,
' of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented an Improvement in ToyGuns, of which the following is a specification My invention consists in an air-tube and a dart for use with the same, and i'ulminating material that is to be exploded by the blow of the dart.
In the drawing, Figure 1 is a longitudinal section of the gun, with the dart in position for firing. Fig. 2 is a view of the dart, and Figs. 3 and 4 show the same in a modified form. Fig. 5 is a sectional view.
The tube a is made, preferably, of tin, as in the ordinary blow-guns. When it is desired to explode the fulminating material within the gun, a short tube or cap, I), is employed at the end of the tube a. This cap I) is closed at the end by an anvil, c, and is provided with the lateral openings 01.
The dart has a head, 6, of wood or other suitable material, and is generally provided with fibers of cotton or other material projecting at the rear of the head 6, as in darts used with air-guns. The fulminating material in the form of a Wafer is placed in the cap 1) upon the anvil c, and the dart is inserted in the opposite end of the tube a, and then, by blowing upon the dart, it is projected against the fulminate upon the anvil c, and causes an explosion. The noise and fumes pass out by the openings d.
If it is desired to explode the fulminate at a distance, the cap b is removed or not employed, and the wafer of fulminate is then to be secured upon the end or head 6, Fig. 2, of the dart by adhesive material, and when the dart is projected against any hard surface the fulminate is exploded.
The dart may be made with the head e in two pieces, as in Fig. 3, the end piece or head e being removable from, or place loosely upon, a pin, so that the fulminate can be placed between the two parts of the head 6 and be exploded in that position by the head 61 when it is forced backward by a blow, or the head 0, Fig. 4, may be provided with a nipple, 0 at the end, upon which an ordinary detonating metallic cap can be placed, and the dart used, as above described.
If the fulminating or percussion cap is to be exploded against the anvil c, and within the cap b, then there may be a sliding or turning shield, m, around the cap b, with one or more lateral openings that are not in line with the openings in the cap I), so that the particles of metal from the percussion-cap cannot fly off and injure any person that may be near by. This device is shown by the cross section Fig. 5.
I claim as my invention 1. A toy blow-gun, consisting of a tube, a, a cap, b, having side opening and shield m, substantially as and for the purpose described.
2. A toy blow-gun, consisting of tube a and cap 12, with side opening, substantially as and for the purpose described.
3. In combination with the tube a. and cap I), having side opening, the darts e 6 adapted to explode a fulminate against the bottom of the tube or cap, as described.
4. A dart or projectile for blow-guns and similar instruments provided with a blunt point or nipple, 6 adapted to hold a percussion-cap, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
