This invention relates to a kit for tourists and picnickers wherein provision is had for storing utensils, dishes, tableware, food, ice and sundry articles, so as to be out of the way yet readily accessible for use when required, the kit including a cupboard, table and chairs which are readily foldable into compact form to be carried upon the running board of an automobile.
While the drawings illustrated a preferred embodimentof the invention it is to be understood that in adapting the means to meet specific needs and requirements, the design may be Varied and changes in the minor details of construction may be resorted to within the scope of the invention as claimed without departing from the spirit thereof.
For a full understanding of the invention and the merits thereof, reference is to be had to the following description and the drawings hereto attached, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a kit embodying the invention showing it adjusted for use.
Figure 2 is a perspective View showing the kit folded.
Figure 3 is a bottom view of the table, showing the legs and chairs folded.
Figure 4 is an enlarged vertical, transverse sectional view of the kit.
Figure 5 is a reduced transverse sectional view of the table and chairs as they appear when adjusted for use.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and designated in the several views of the drawings by like reference characters.
The kit is designed to be carried upon the running board of an automobile and to economize space the back wall of the cabinet conforms approximately to the side of the vehicle body, as indicated most clearly in Figure 1 of the drawings. The front of the cab inet is preferably of sectional formation and is adapted to be lowered into horizontal position for use as a table, as indicated most clearly in Figure 1 of the drawings. The body of the cabinet comprises sides 1, top 2, bottom 3, and back f. A vertical partition 5 divides the cabinet into two compartments, one of which is supplied with shelves 6 and the other provided in its top portion with drawers 7 and racks for plates, cups and saucers. The lower portion of the shelved compartment constitutes an ice chamber and is closed by means of a door 8. The lower portion of the compartment containing the drawers 7 and racks is utilized for receiving cooking utensils. The lower portion of the front of the cabinet is closed by a fixed section 9 to which the table is hingedly connected.
The front of the cabinet above the lower fixed section 9 is closed by a cover comprising leaves or wings 10 and 11 which are hinged to one another and to the fixed section 9. The leaf or wing 11 is of a length to extend from the upper edge of the section 9 to the top 2 whereas the wing or section 10 is of a length to extend from the top 2 to the bottom 3. The part 11 closes 70 by an upward movement and the wing 10 closes by a downward movement and is disposed in front of the wing 11 and fined section 9. Suitable fastenings, such as hooks 12, secure the front when closed, as indicated most clearly in Figure 2 of the drawings. The device, when placed upon the running board of an automobile, is secured thereto by means of clamps 13 and a fastening 14, the latter consisting of a turnbuckle and disposed between the top of the cabinet and the side of the automobile.
Folding legs 15 are hingedly connected to the leaf or wing 10 in a manner to fold thereagainst. The wings or leaves 10 and 11 are provided with 21- depending rail for stiffening and reinforcing and to provide a space for reception of the legs 15 and folding chairs 16 which are connected to the folding front of the cabinet by folding braces 17. The 90 braces 17 are connected to a rod 18 which extends lengthwise of the leaf 10.
The kitcombines a cupboard. table, and chairs, the parts folding into compact form, as indicated most clearly in Figure 2 of the drawings, so as to be readily and conveniently carried upon the running board of an automobile. The drawers 7 are adapted to receive tableware and the shelves 6 provide convenient means for the storing of food,
canned goods and sundry articles. The folding front not only closes the cabinet but also provides a table and convenient means for holding the chairs 16. An increased storing space results from the shaping of the back 4 to conform to the side of an automobile to fit close thereagainst as will be readily appreciated.
What is claimed is:
1. A tourist kit comprising a cabinet having the lower portion of its front provided with a fixed section having a horizontally extending ledge along its upper edge, a leaf hinged to said fixed section at the upper edge thereof and when closed extending between the fixed section and the top of the cabinet with its lower end resting upon said ledge, a second leaf adapted to cover the front of the cabinet for the full depth thereof when closed and hving its upper edge hinged to the upper end of the first-mentioned lea-f. said leaves having marginal flanges facing each other and contacting when the leaves are closed and defining an enclosed space, and folding legs hinged to the leaves between the flanges thereof for movement into and out of a folded position and adapted to be enclosed in the space between the two leaves when the leaves are closed.
2. A tourist kit including a cabinet, 21 folding front therefor provided with legs movable into and out of a folded position against the front. folding chairs having pivotally connected legs, and braces having inner and outer sections pivoted to each other, said braces extending transversely of the front and having their inner sections pivoted to the front and their outer sections pivoted to certain of the legs whereby the chairs and braces may be folded compactly and disposed closely against the front when the front is in closed position.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
