GEORGE It. STINE, OF EAST SAN GABRIEL. CALIFORNIA, ASSGNOR OF ONE-HALF T EDWARD J. MCDONALD, OF RCHMOND, CALFO'RNIA.
CAMP KIT.
Application filed November 3, 1922.
To all 'LU/mm if' may concern.'
Be it known that l. Gnoncn R. STINE. a citizen. of the United States, residing at Fast San Gabriel7 in the county of Los Angeles and State of California. have invented new and useful Improvements in Camp Kits, of which the following is a specification.
rl`his invention relate-s to camp kits and has for its object to provide a convertible lunch kit and table.
Another object of the invention is to provide a camp kit including a lunch box which will form a cooling cabinet for the contents.
Another object is to provide a collapsible table and cooling cabinet that may be very compactly arranged for attachment to, and for carriage upon, the running-boards of automobiles.
Other objects and advantages will be made manifest in the following specification of an embodiment of the invention illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the nested elements of the camping kit shown as appllied to the running-board of an automon e. i
Figure 2 is a side of the kit in the open position to provide access to its interior.
Figure 3 is a vertical cross section through the open kit.
Figure 4L is an end View of the folded table top which forms the outermost wall of the closed kit.
Figure 5 is an end view of one ofy the benches removed from the kit.
Figure 6 is a side elevation of the same.
Figure 7 is an underneath plan of the unfolded table forming top.
Figure 8 is a perspective of the set up table.
Figure 9 is a perspective of a portion of one of the table legs. showing a clamping bracket.
Figure 10 is a side elevation and partial section showing the attachment of a leg to the table top.
The present invention consists 0f a device embodying a cabinet or box having a back wall 2 and a bottom 3, the latter of which is adapted to be suitably secured to the foot or running-board of an automobile as by bolts 4, or otherwise. The back and bottom are of suitable width and height Serial No. 598,822.
and are attached to end panels 5 extending a height substantially equal to the height of the back 2. .fi horizontal partition 6 or other supporting means is provided connectinn` the end walls and upon this there may be arranged suitable cooking utensils or other service articles as' may be desired, such, for instance, as glasses 7. ANested dishes or pans', or other articles S may be clamped firmly in position on the shelf 6 as by means of a clamp slat 9 which may be drawn down tight by a screw 10 and its wing nut 11.
Adjacent the top portion and on the inner faces of the end walls 5 are transverse brackets 12 and above these there is hinged at 13 to the back wall a folding top 111 of a width somewhat less than the width of the end walls 5. The top 14 is adapted to be folded down to closing position and atf tached to its `swinging edge asby a hinge or hinges 15 is a frame 16 having a foraminous panel 17 adapted to be folded down in front of the storage compartment of the cabinet and lie somewhat inside of the front margins of the end walls. The ,frame 16 with the panel 17 thus pro-vides for the ventilation of the contents of the cabinet which `is especially desirable when perishable food stuffs are carried in the` cabinet.
The ventilating panel provides notonly for cooling and ventilation but also prevents the larger insects from having access to the cabinet.
A further feature of the invention consists in providing an exterior and front removable door device for covering and protecting the closed Ventilating panel 17. Such removable closure I pre-fer to so construct that when applied it will rest against the closed ventilating panel 17 and within the ends of the cabinet. The lower front corners of the cabinet are shown as provided rlhe dismounted front closure when extended may beutilized as a table top by attaching thereto, in any suitable manner, legs '23. A simple, substantial and inexpensive form of means for attaching the legs 23 is shown as consisting of inside and outside angle clamps 24e and 25. Through the inner clamp 24 there is adjustable a set or clamp screw 26. The angle clamps are secured to the upper end of the legs 23 with the clamping leaves spaced sufficiently to receive'the table top as is shown in Figures 9 4and l0. After thetop is inserted the clamp screw 26 is tightened up and will firmly hold the parts secured to the table top.
It will be seen from the above that the legs are adapted to be detached from the tabletop and compactly arranged withinV the cabinet and the table top is adapted to be folded to the position shown in Figure 4 and then placed infront of the closed panel 17.
With the parts thus folded and attached together benches may be stacked or nested one on top of the other, as is clearly shown in Figure l. Each bench consists of a bench boardBO having end legs 3l and these are reinforced'by diagonal straps 32 at the corners. Further strength is secured by corner plates 33 secured to the contiguous ends ofthe bench boardSO and the legs 31. TwoI of the benches thus constructed can be very compactly stacked upon the closed cabinet, and the whole will, therefore, form'not only anextremely compact and spacious camping kit butalso 'provides for the service of the several lelements 'when dismounted for different respective purposes. Cutlery and silverware may be attached in strap pockets 28 provided uponthe inner face of the'top 14 ofthe'case.
Further embodiments, modifications and spirit of the invention as here claimed.
lVhat is claimed is:
l. A running-board camp kit including a case having a removable top, a shelf arrangement in the case below the top and upon which articles may be arranged, and a rigidly acting clamping slat bolted to the shelf for securing the arranged articles in place.
2. A runningboard camp kit including a case having a removable top, a shelf arrangement in the case below the top and upon which articles may be arranged, and a clamping slat for securing the arranged articles in place, the clamping slat being attached to the said shelf by a clamp bolt means.
8. An automobile camping kit comprising a case adapted to be attached to the runningboard of an automobile and having a hinged top, and a frame hinged to the swinging edge of the top and including a foraminous side panel for the case.
4. An automobile camping kit comprising a case adapted to be attached to the running-board o-f an automobile and having a folding top, a foraminous side panel for the case providing for ventilation thereof, and a demountable front protecting closure applicable to the case to cover the foraminous panel, said closure consisting of foldable elements adapted to be extended to form a table top.
5. A camp kit comprising a case adapted to be arranged upon the running-board of an automobile, said case having a foldable top, a side panel lying within the front plane of the ends of the case, corner plates at the lower front corners of the case, and a removable closure adapted to be held at its lower corners by the said corner plates.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification.
