Description

A. M. SMITH.
PERCUSSION DROP-TOYS.
Patented Dec.26, 1876.
UNITED STATES,
PATENT OFFICE.
ANTHONEY M. SMITH, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN PERCUSSION DROP-TOYS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 185,650, dated December 26, 1876; application filed May 13, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANTHONEY M. SMITH, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a Percussion Drop-Toy, of which the following is a specification:
Various styles of toy pistols have been made, in which percussion-caps are exploded. These, however, are more or less costly, in consequence of the hammer and spring that are made use of. In some instances, a weight, sliding in a tube, has been used to explode a cap placed upon a separate nipple.
My invention relates to a toy to take the place oftorpedoes and small cannon, used for amusement, and the same consists in a drop or weight, having a nipple at the lower end, and constructed so that when it is allowed to fall and strike the pavement or other hard substance the percussion-cap placed upon such nipple will strike and be exploded, thereby producing a detonation that is pleasing to the juvenile car.
In the drawing, Figure l is a vertical section of the toy-drop, and Fig. 2 is a plan of the same.
The drop a, has an eye, b, at the upper end, to which a string is attached, and at the other end is a nipple, d, 01' a size to receir'e a percussion-cap, c. The shape of the drop may vary, but I have shown the same somewhat resembling a bell.
The toy can either be thrown against a wall or hard substance, or allowed to drop upon the pavement, and the percussion-cap will be exploded. The string serves as a guide, and insures proper movement of the toy, so as to strike the percussion-cap. A piece of wire or a strip of wood may take the place of string as a trail.
I claim as my invention The drop-toy, provided with a nipple at the lower part to receive a percussion-cap, and at the upper end an eye or other device for attaching a string or other trail, as set forth.
Signed by me this 10th day of May, A. D. 1876.
ANTHONEY M. SMITH.
