ROBERT KLIEMANDT, OF MOUNT VERNON. NEW YORK, ASSIGNORTO- DANIEL POTTER OLMSTEAD, OF'PERTH AMBOY, NEW JERSEY.
CONFETTO-C'ANNO'N.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 1 0,1 906.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, ROBERT KLIEMANDT, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Mount Vernon, in the county of West-' chester and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Confetti Cannon, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to devices used upon social occasions and for amusement for the purpose of scattering the substance known as confetti over floors and tables and over the persons of participants in various social functions.
My invention relates more particularly to a miniature cannon or mortar for causing the confetti or analogous substance to be scattered by means of an explosion.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both figures.
Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the confetti-cannon held by the hand as it appears at the instant the explosion takes place,- and Fig. 2 is an enlarged vertical central section through the cannon, showing the confetti to be scattered, together with the explosive charge and the wadding.
A barrel 3, made preferably of cardboard, is strengthened by means of a ring 4, of the the same material, this ring being placed in one end of the barrel. A paper head 5, through which a cord 6 passes, is secured to the barrel 3 and to the ring 4. This cord also passes through an inner disk 7, of cardboard,- and is partially embedded within an explosive 8, consisting, preferably, of chlorate of potash, red phosphorus, black oxid of manganese, and gum-tragacanth, this mixture being mounted upon a bit of cardboard 8. The wadding 9, consisting of a scrap of paper loosely crumpled up, is placed within the barrel 3, and within the front end of this barrel is poured a suitable charge of confetti 10 or analogous material. The front end of the barrel is now closed by a cap 11, of paper, secured rigidly thereto and having a portion 12 adapted to be broken by the force of the explosion. A ring 13, of cardboard, is secured between the cap and the barrel for the purpose of strengthening the barrel.
. My invention is used as follows: The 0p- -over floors.
erator grasps the barrel 3 in one hand, as indicated in Fig. 1, and by means of the cord 6 pulls upon the explosive 8, so as to cause the latter to detonate. The wadding 9 prevents the confetti from becoming soiled in consequence of the explosion. The result is that the confetti or analogous material is forcibly driven out and at the same time maintained perfectly clean. The loudness of thedetonation is determined by the quantity of explosive employed.
Cannon of the kind above described are used in games and amusements of various kinds, and especially for throwing confetti over the persons of dancers and actors and They are also used as fireworks and employed for projecting rice upon bridal couples.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The combination of a barrel of cardboard, a detonating member mounted therein and provided with a cord whereby it may be ignited, a mass of confetti or the'like disposed within said barrel, and means for preventing said confetti or the like from being discolored.
2. The combination of a barrel of cardboard, an explosive member mounted therein, a string connected with said explosive member for igniting the same, a mass of confetti disposed within said barrel and adapted to be thrown out by the force of explosion, and means for temporarily retaining said 0011- fetti or the like in position.
3. The combination of a barrel of card board, a ring of cardboard mounted within one end thereof, a disk of paper secured to said barrel of cardboard and said rin a detonating member disposed within said barrel, and a string connected with said detonating member through said disk for the purpose of igniting said detonating member, paper wadding mounted within said barrel and disposed adjacent to said detonating member, a mass of confetti disposed within said barrel and engaging said wadding, and a paper cap mounted upon said barrel for the purpose of retaining said confetti temporarily within the same.
4. The combination of a barrel provided with a closed end, a string entering said ICC closed end, a detonati'ng member mounted name to thisspecifieation in the presence of Within saig bilrrel andlengaged byiaid string two subscribing witnesses. I v I v so as to e etonate When sai strin is pulled upon, and a mass of confetti dispo sed ROBERT KLIEMANDT' 5 within said barrel and adapted tobe thrown Witnesses:
' out when the explosion takes place. F. W. HANAFORD,
In testimony whereof I have signed my l EVERARD B. MARSHALL.
