W. vmmnz.`
TAILORS MEASURES. No. 185,412.. Patented Dec.19, 1876.
TMC GRAPHIC CDJLY UNITED STTEs PATENT WILLIAM VENNER, OF HAMBURG, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF OF BIS RIGHT TO WILLIAM ELLWOOD, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN TAILORS MEASURES.
speoication forming part of Letters Patent No. 185,412, dated December 19, 1876; application led october 23, 1876,
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM VENNER, of Hamburg, in the county of Erie and State of New York, assigner of one-halt to WILLIAM ELLWOOD, of Hamburg, Erie county, New
i York, have made certain Improvements iu Tailors Measures, of which the following is a specication This invention is for the purpose of taking the actual measure of persons to get accurate measurements for coats and vests; and the invention consists in combining, with a rightangled wooden, or metal, measure, a slotted raised slide, in which runs a movable head attached to a tape-measure, as hereinafter explained.
The drawing shows an elevation of the dev1ce.
A represents a vertical, straight, flat, wooden piece, having a metal (or wooden) arm, B, attached at right angles thereto, which is for the purpose of setting under the arm of the person to be measured, the part A setting close to the shoulder. Attached at both ends on one side of this straight piece A is a metal piece, C, having a slot, a, running nearly its entire length. This metal piece bulges out i a little, so that it fits to the shape of the gure (ofthe customer) and the wooden verthe hip. In the slot a is pivoted a sliding head, b, to which is attached the usual tapemeasure D. This, by having a firm basis at b, is carried around the body, shoulder, or waist of the customer, and au actual measure obtained, which is not the case where a tapemeasure is only used, as is the present custom.
The slot and slide allows its use on diierent lengths of bodies to be measured, and is very important and useful for that purpose, as the point of starting the measurement can be made higher or lower and a firm basis for a measurement had, as before explained.
vI claim- A tailors measure in which is combined the straight piece A, the arm B, the curved metallic piece G, attached at each end to the piece A, and having the elongated slot a, and the head b arranged to slide in said slot, and provided with a tape-measure, as and for the objectset forth.
In witness whereof I have hereunto signed my name in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
WILLIAM VENNER.
