Description

April 12, 1932. G. D. OVERHOLTZ 1,853,142
PANEL FOR OUTDOOR ADVERTISING STRUCTURES Filed July 3, 1929 INVENTOR vu u Patented Apr. 12, 1932 MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA, A
PENNSYLVANIA.
enoaen :0. OVERHOL'IZIOF LEETSDALE, 1ENN'SYLVANIA,-ASS1GNOR To Ema-dam! CORPORATION OF PANEL rononrnooa ADVERTISING srauo'runns Application filed July's"), 1929. Serial no. 375,813.
This invention relates to panelsemployed in out-door advertising steel structures.
In structures of the character specified and in which a plurality of panels are employed for the purpose of pasting posters thereto, considerable trouble has been encountered due to the spaces between ad a cent panels when the panels are assembled on a supporting framework. These spaces provide passages forwind and rain and, unless some means are provided to effect a seal between adjacent panels, the posters aretorn or destroyed after they are pasted to the panels.
The prime object of the present invention is to provide a new and improved panel construction embodyingmeans for sealing the spaces between adjacent panels.
Other objects of the present invention are, to provide a sealing means of such a character as to afford an aligning abutment for truing up the adjacent panels; to provide a strong and durable abutment of sufiicient width to permit ready engagement during assembly of the structure; and to provide an eficient panel including angle members and a sheet metal element bent along the edge thereof to form the sealing means.
In the accompanying drawings, which illustrate an application 03": my invention:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a panel constructed according to my invention;
Fig. 2, a front elevational view of an outdoor advertfsing structure composed of a plurality of said panels; and
Fig. 3. an enlarged sectional view on the .line III III of Fig. 2, particularly showing the sealing means.
Referring to the drawings, the panel A is formed of side members 5-5a and end members 66, preferably in the form of angle bars mitered and secured together by'welding. Said side angles are formed with a plurality of pin-receiving openings 7, adapted to register with adjacent panels for securing thesame together.
Adapted to extend from one side member tothe other is a sheet metal plate or element 8. ihis plate at its longitudinally extendin edges is adapted to extend over,
flanges 9 and 9a of the side members,- and thence at right angles along flanges 10 and 10a thereof; The portion 11 extending along flange 10 of member 5 is bent over and around said flange, as shown in Fig. 3. The laterally extending edges of the plate 8 are bent over end members 66, as at 6a. J
It willbe noted that the flange 10a of member 5a is slightly wider than flange 10 of member 5, to assist vin forming the sealing abutment a. Accordingly, the bent porti-on 11a is bent outwardly substantially at right angles, as at 12, for a suflicient distance to'seat the side member 5 of an adjacent panel (seeFig. The remaining portion of the plate is bent back uponitself arcuate ly as at 13, and extends along the inner face of flange 10a. The .arcuateportion 13 acts 1 as a reinforcement for the abutment seat 12, providing added strength and rigidity.
The bent portions of the plate 8 i are formed with openings 14. and '15 adapted to register-with the openings 7 of the side members, and receive headed adjacent panels together.
In erecting the panels, the side member'5 of one panel may be engaged with the abutment seat 12 of an adjacent panel. Openings 7, 1 1 and 15 are slightly greater in? diameter than the pins 16. Therefore, before securing the panels finally, they may be pins 16 for securlng readily aligned by tapping, until side memand modifications are contemplated, provided they fall within the scope of the following claims.
1. A .panel for outdoor advertising structuresincluding a metallic frame composed of angle bars, a sheet metal plate having edge port-ions bent over said angle bars whereby they embrace opposite sides'thereof, one of said portions forminga sealing abutment for an adjacent panel, said abutment being disposed at substantially a right angle to said portions, and a substantially arcuate portion reinforcing and connecting said abutment and the remainder of the edge portion of which it is a part.
2. In an advertising structure, panel units, each unit having an angle-bar frame member and a plate, said lates extendingacross one flange of the ang e members and having rearwardly extending portions of U-shape closely embracing opposite sides of the remaining flanges of the angle frame members, one of said U-shaped portions having an intermediate longitudinally extending abutment insubstantial parallelism With but in opposite, direction to the plate engaged by the companion U-shaped member and associated parts, and a fastening means engaging said remaining flanges and causing sealing engagement of said U-shaped portions.
3. A panel for outdoor advertising structures including a metallic frame having its side members formed of angle-bars, one of the flanges of one of said angle-bars being Wider than the corresponding flange of the other side member, a sheet metal plate having edge portions bent over and closely embracing a flange of each angle-bar, one of the said edge portions embracing the Wider flange ineluding an integral abutment spaced for engagement by an adjacent panel unit.
4. In anadvertising structure, panel units, each unit including a metallic frame having side members formed of angle-bars, one of said angle-bars having a Wider flange than the corresponding flange of the other anglebar, and a sheet metal plate; said plate having edge portions bent over and closely embracing corresponding flanges of the anglebars, said bent portions of the plate embracing the Wider flange including an abutment spaced for engagement by an adjacent panel unit, and means passed through the Wider flange of one unit and a flange of an angle bar of an adjacent unit for securing the units together.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
GEORGE D. OVERHOLTZ.
