RECEPTACLE Fild Jp. 3. 1929 IN VEN TOR.

Patented Apr. 5, 1932 UNITED stares ARTHUR VON FRANKENBERG, OF NEW YORK, N. Y. I
nEcErTAcLE Application filed January 3, 1929. Serial No. 330,043.
This invention relates to water-tight receptacles, and is more particularly directed to a case for cigarettes and the like adapted for use by bathers.
An object of this invention is to provide a receptacle in the compact form of the usual cigarette case, which shall be positively water-proof, and have means for readily opening and closing the same.
A. further object of this invention is to provide a structure comprising few and simple parts, which shall be relatively cheap to manufacture and practical and eflicient to a high degree.
Other objects of this invention will in part be obvious and in part hereinafter pointed out.
The invention accordingly consists in the features of construction, combinations of 20 elements and arrangement of parts which will be exemplified in the construction hereinafter described, and of which the scope of application will be indicated in the following claims.
In the accompanying drawings, in which is shown one of the various possible illustrative embodiments of this invent-ion.
Fig. 1 is an elevational cross-sectional view of a receptacle embodying the invention;
Fig. 2 is a cross-sectional view taken on line 2-2 of Fig. 1; and
Fig. 3 is a cross-sectional view taken on line 33 of Fig. 1.
Referring in detail to the drawings, designates a water-proof receptacle embodying the invention in the form of a cigarette case adapted to be used by bathers, and for like purposes. Said receptacle 10 comprises a body or case 11 and cover 12 therefor. Said body 11 comprises a bottom wall 13, side walls 14:,14CL, a front wall 15 and rear wall 16. The cover 12 comprises a top wall 17, side walls 18 and 18a, a front wall 19 and a rear wall 20.
The dimensions of said cover are preferably such that the lower edges of its walls contact the upper edges of the body walls,
thus makinga completely closed receptacle. The cover 12 is hinged to box 11 by a hinge 21 interconnecting the rear Walls 16 and of the box and cover respectively.
Means is provided for forming a chamber within the receptacle for containing ci'garettes and the like. To this enda rectangular, frame member 22 is fixed within the box 12. Said frame member comprises upstanding wall portions 23 somewhat spaced from the four wallsof the box 11, and an inwardlylextending flange 24 solderedor otherwise secured to the bottom wall 13 of said boxi Said I frame 22 is preferably of somewhat'greater height than the walls of boxlfl, and terminates in abeaded upper edge. portion 25 for a purpose hereinafter appearing. The cha n-l ber 26 formed by the frame member 22 is adapted to conveniently contain a number of cigarettes 27 or the like. Hinged to the'rearwall 23 of the frame, as at 28, is a retainingstrip 29 pressed down wardly by one end 30 of a tension spring 31. Said strip extends across the chamber 26 for holding the cigarettes 25 or other articles in said chamber and preventing shifting of the same. v
Spring latch means is provided for opening and closing the receptacle. To this end a U-shaped strip 32 of spring metal'is ce'n trally disposed within the chamber formed by the'front wall 23 of theframe and'wall 15 of the box 11. Said strip 32 is provided with an upstanding arm 33 soldered or oth erwise secured to said front wall 23. The other arm 34 of said strip 32 normally presses against the inner surface 15a of the front wall of the receptacle. At the upper end thereof, said arm 34 is provided with a ramped catch member 35. Upon closing said cover, said catch 35 is adapted to engage an edge portion 36 provided by a slot or opening 37 formed in the front wall 19 of the cover. A projection 38 secured to said arm 34 ex tends thru an opening 39 in the front wall 15. To open the case it is merely necessary to press the projection 38 for disengaging the catch 35.
For aiding in the opening movement of the cover 12, a small spring member 40, centrally disposed with respect to the rear wall 16, is provided with a portion 41 soldered or otherwise secured to the inner surface 16a of said wall. The upper free end 42 of said spring is adapted to press against the inner surface 20a of wall 20 for opening the cover upon release of the spring 35.
To make the article containing chamber 26 water-proof, a gasket 45 comprising a rectangular strip of soft rubber or other suitable material, is provided for coacting with the beaded edge portion 25 of frame member'22l A rectangular frame member 46 having an inwardly extending flange 47 secured to the top wall 17 ofthe cover, pro 'vides aseat 48 for tightly clamping the inner edge portion 49 of the gasket to said cover. It will now be apparent that upon closing the receptacle the'rubber gasket presses against the top beaded edge of the frame and thus renders the chamber 6 formed by said frame, positively water-tight.
A dominant feature of this invention is that the receptacle as a wholesimulates and may be handled in the same manner as the usual cigarette case having hinged sections andisnevertheless water-tight when closed, to enable the same; to be used by bathers and generally under moist conditions Without wetting the contents.
It will thus be seen that there is provided a device in which the several objects of this invention are achieved, and which is well adapted'to meet the conditions of practical use.
As various possible embodiments might be made of the above invention, and as various changes might be made in the embodiment, set forth, it. is to be understood that all mattr herein set forth or shown in the accompanying. drawings is to be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
Having thus described my invention I claim as new anddesire to secure by'Letters Patent :i t

2.= A receptacle comprising a body, a cover hinged thereto, a frame member within said receptacle forming a chamber for articles, means within the receptacle for water-proofingsaid chamber upon closingsaid receptacle and spring means for retaining said recep' tacle in closed condition, said frame being secured to the bottom of said body and spaced from the sides of saidreceptacle.
3. A cigarette case comprising a body section and a cover section hinged thereto, means within said case forming a chamber for containing cigarettes, means for automaticaliy locking said sections upon swinging said sections together to closing position and means within the casing for rendering said chamber waterproof.
at. In a receptacle of the character described, in combination, a box portion, a cover for said box hinged thereto, a chamber forming frame member within said receptacle, having walls spaced from the side walls ofsaid box, a gasket secured to said-cover and adapted to contact the upper edge of said frame upon closing the cover, to render said chamber water-tight, and releasable means for retaining said cover in closed condition. I
5. In a receptacle of the character described, in combination, a box portion having bottom and side walls, a cover for said box hinged thereto, a chamber forming frame member withinrsaid receptacle having walls spaced from the side Walls of said body, a
gasket secured to said cover and adapted to contact the upper edge of said frameupon closing the cover to render saidchamber water-tight, and means forretaining', said cover in closed condition, said means comprising-a spring catch member secured to said frame.
6. A cigarette case having a body-section rial secured to the cover section and adapted to contact said frame. I
7. A cigarette case having a body section and a cover section hinged thereto, means within said case forming a chamber for containing cigarettes, means for automatically locking said section upon swingingsa'id section together to closing position, means within the casing for rendering said chamber water-proof, said chamber forming means comprising a frame member having side walls spaced from the walls of said body and secured at the lower edge thereof to the bottom wall of said body, said water proofing means comprising a strip of resilient material secured to the cover section and adapted to Contact said frame, and spring pressed means llO secured to said frame for retaining said cigarettes Within said chamber.
8. In a receptacle of the character described, in combination, a box portion, a cover for said box hinged thereto, a chamber forming frame member Within said receptacle having Walls spaced from the side walls of said box, a gasket secured to said cover and adapted to contact the upper edge of said frame upon closing the cover to render said chamber Water-tight, releasable means for retaining said cover in closed condition, and means for aiding in opening said cover upon releasing said retaining means.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
ARTHUR VON FRANKENBERG.
