Description
A. M. M I L L ER.
MAIL-BAG FASTENI'NGS. I No. 185,186. Patented Dec. 12, 1876.
INVENTOR I ATTOR N EYS WITgESSES THE GRAPHIC CO. NM
UNITED STATES PATENT Qrrron,
ASHER M. MILLER, OF STURGIS, MICHIGAN.
IMPROVEMENT IN MAIL-BAG FASTENINGS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 185,186, dated December 12, 1876; application filed September 5, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ASHER M. MILLER, of Sturgis, in the county of St. Joseph and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Fasteners for Mail- Bags, Grain-Sacks, 860.; and I do hereby declare the following to be afull, clear, and exact description of theinvention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.
My invention relates to bag-fasteners, and consists in a novel fastener, as hereinafter described and claimed.
[11 the drawings, Figure 1 represents my imprm'ement in use upon a bag. Fig. 2 is a detached view of same, and Fig. Ssbows different ways of securing the fastening-cord to the flexible loop.
A is a bag or sack, B a fastening cord loosely sewed around the top of the same,
while U is the loop-fastener forming my improvement. This latter is a piece of flexible soft material, preferably leather, though any other similar soft material that will yield so as not to cut or wear the cord B will answer. This fastening G is provided with the two small holes, 0, at its upper end for the passage of the cord, whereby the latter is secured to the bag. It is also provided with a loopopening, c, through which the cord B is passed and secured to after the mouth of the bag is closed. When the bag is for the sacking of grain or flour, which require to be closely secured, I prefer that the pieceG shall be inverted or present the loop downward, and I wrap the loose end of the cord, after closing the mouth of the bag, around the neck several times before fastening to the piece 0, and the loop being beneath, can readily pass the end of the cord underneath one of the coils, so that the pressure of the bag shall prevent it from coming loose; and I sometimes make the'piece double, or put two pieces on a sack, one presenting the loop upward and the other downward, so that the bag may be readily fastened in either way desired.
Having fully described myinvention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A bag-fastener made of flexible material, and provided with two small openings at its upper end for the reception of the cord, and a large opening at its opposite end to receive the free ends of the cord, the fastening-piece being made of sufficient length to admit of the cord being wrapped around its central portion without obstructing the openings, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ASHER M. MILLER.
